Two Maryland pitchers were selected on the second day of the 2007 Major League Baseball First-Year Draft on Friday, as junior Ryan Moorer (Peabody, Mass./Peabody Veterans Memorial HS) and senior Casey Baron (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch HS) were taken by the Seattle Mariners and Milwaukee Brewers organizations, respectively.
Moorer was selected in the 12th round by the Mariners (375th overall), while Baron was chosen by Milwaukee in the 34th round with the 1,028th pick.
Moorer, a hard-throwing right-hander, has amassed a 5.36 ERA and 7-10 record with the Terrapins in three seasons of work, highlighted by the 2006 campaign in which he earned a 3-0 record and 3.24 ERA in 21 appearances, including five starts. Moorer was chosen in the 13th round of the 2004 MLB Draft out of high school by the Chicago Cubs, but opted instead to play for the Terrapins.
Baron, a left-hander starter, leaves College Park after an impressive four-year stint as a member of the Terps, earning a 4.54 ERA and 8-10 record in 57 appearances, including 25 starts. This season, Baron was 4-5 with a 4.06 ERA in 16 games, 14 of which were starts.
Moorer and Baron, along with junior pitcher Brett Cecil, account for the 2007 draft class from Maryland. Head coach Terry Rupp now tallies 25 former players to be selected in the draft.
Last season, the Terps saw two players drafted, as Overbey and pitcher Ben Pfinsgraff were selected. Overbey was picked in the 15th round by the Blue Jays, while Pfinsgraff was tabbed by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 22nd round in 2006.
