Baseball Plays Host to Towson Wednesday at Shipley Field

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland baseball team plays host to in-state rival Towson at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Shipley Field in the Terrapins' only midweek contest before finishing Atlantic Coast Conference play this weekend against Wake Forest. The Terps enter Wednesday's matchup with the Tigers with a 23-26 record and 7-20 record in the ACC. The Terps took one of three games last weekend at No. 17 Clemson, winning the series finale, 8-6. Maryland will put a couple streaks on the line against the Tigers. The Terps have won nine consecutive non-conference games since losing at George Mason March 24. Maryland is also unbeaten against in-state foes this season, winning all seven matchups. Senior Mike Murphy leads the Terps in most offensive categories, including batting average (.326), slugging percentage (.618), RBIs (42), doubles (14), home runs (12) and total bases (110). Murphy ranks in the top 10 in the conference in slugging, homers and total bases. Towson is currently 24-21 and boasts one of the top offensive teams in the country. The Tigers have hit 82 home runs this season, ranking among the top power-hitting teams in the country. Four Towson players have hit at least 10 home runs this season, led by senior Gary Helmick, who leads the Tigers with 15 homers and 45 RBIs. Helmick also leads the Tigers and the entire Colonial Athletic Association with a .429 batting average and .504 on-base percentage. The Terps won this season's earlier meeting, 7-2, April 7 at Shipley Field and lead the all-time series, 35-27-2.
