COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins (20-26, 7-18 ACC) dropped their series opener against 13th-ranked Virginia, 6-0, on Friday night at Shipley Field. Casey Baron yielded four runs (three earned) over seven innings in a losing effort and Dan Benick and Chad Durakis both singled for the Terps, who managed just two hits on the evening.
For the Cavaliers, left-hander Sean Doolittle (8-1) recorded a career-high 13 strikeouts in 6.1 innings on the mound and added a home run at the plate. He struck out the side three times and fanned eight in a row at one point.
Virginia wasted no time getting on the board, pushing across two runs in the first. Rightfielder Brandon Marsh opened the scoring with a solo homer to left before David Adams came in all the way from first on a two-out throwing error by Baron to give the Cavaliers a two-run advantage. Doolittle's two-run blast in the third made it 4-0, UVA.
Baron (1-5) would eventually settle down, though, allowing no Cavalier runs on a pair of singles over his final four innings of work.
With one down in the sixth, Benick reached on a bunt single, breaking up the no-hitter and giving Maryland a spark on offense. He would move to second on a balk and then third base on a grounder to second, but was left stranded when Dan Melvin popped out.
The Maryland bats started to get to Doolittle in the seventh. After Durakis extended his hit streak to seven games on a base hit to left Joe Palumbo walked, giving the Terps two men on with one away. Michael Schwimer then came in out of the bullpen and retired the next two hitters to preserve the shutout.
Two more UVA runs crossed in the top of the ninth on a two-run single to left by Adams to put the score at 6-0.
Maryland will face Virginia tomorrow in the middle matchup at 7 p.m. Senior right-hander Ben Pfinsgraff (2-5, 6.21 ERA) will get the nod on the mound for the Terps against Jacob Thompson (8-1, 2.63).
