Baseball Sweeps Howard in Doubleheader

April 15, 1998

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland catcher Scott Bronowicz hit a two-run homer to center field with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Terps a 5-3 victory over Howard in the first game of a doubleheader at Shipley Field this evening.

Trailing 3-2, Howard tied the game in the top of the seventh inning when lead-off hitter Dwight Fortune was hit by a pitch and scored with two outs on a single by Byron Ewing, setting the stage for Bronowicz's game-winning homer.

Bronowicz was 2-2 at the plate, including his seventh homer of the season, with three RBI, while Larry Long stole four bases, bringing his season total to 25.

Maryland reliever Mike Ginsberg worked 2/3 of an inning to earn his second win of the season while starter Aaron McFarling pitched five innings, scattered five hits and allowed two runs.

The dramatics continued for Maryland in the second game as the Terps won 7-6 in eight innings. Trailing 6-4 entering the bottom of the seventh, freshman DH Brian Patenaude hit his second career home run, a two-run shot to center field to tie the game at 6-6. Maryland reliever, and winner, Ryan Fleetwood put the Bison down 1-2-3 in the top of the eighth and the Terps scored with no outs in the bottom of the inning for the 7-6 victory. The winning run, freshman Michael D'Archangelo, started the inning with a double to left field and scored on a Larry Long bunt attempt that Howard third baseman Johan Hernandez threw away at first base.

With the wins, Maryland improves to 18-19-1 overall, while Howard drops to 14-26. The Terps travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., for a three-game weekend series against Wake Forest on April 17-19.
