April 4, 2004
CLEMSON, S.C. - The University of Maryland baseball team fell in its series finale to Clemson University Sunday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson, S.C., by a score of 8-2. The game featured a pitching duel early between Terrapin junior Kevin Hart and the Tigers' Robert Rohrbaugh. Hart was strong in his seven innings of work for the Terrapins (13-15, 2-7 ACC). He allowed one earned run on seven hits to the Tigers (17-10, 6-0 ACC). Hart struck out six batters and walked three. Defensive errors proved costly to the Terps, leading to six unearned runs for Clemson. The Tigers recorded one run in the fourth and broke away with another six runs in the seventh inning. Clemson's Brad McCann hit a grand slam to left and was followed by a solo homer from the catcher Lou Santangelo. Maryland was able to avoid the shutout by scoring two runs in the ninth inning. Senior Anthony Buffone had reached on an error to lead off the inning and junior Jason Maxey then doubled. The pair scored when junior Will Frazier singled to center in the next at bat. Frazier went 3-for-4 and junior Maxey picked up a pair of hits against the Tigers. Junior Justin Hulse came out of the bullpen to pitch the eighth inning in relief of Hart.
The Terrapins be in action next when they host Maryland-Eastern Shore in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 6, at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Md. The first game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
