Maxwell, Sargent Launch Terps To 4-2 Win
April 4, 2003 College Park, Md. - Outfielder Justin Maxwell (Olney, Md.) homered for the fourth time in three games and starting pitcher Sean Kane (West Chester, Pa.) turned in his second strong performance in two starts as the Maryland Terrapins (9-17, 0-8 ACC) handed New York Tech (5-12) a 4-2 defeat. Second baseman Joe Sargent (Chesapeake Beach, Md.) also homered for the Terps, who have now won three games in a row for the first time this season. The Terps got off to a rocky start against the visiting Bears, who scored two runs in the first off of Kane (1-4) on RBI groundouts after loading the bases to start game. Kane settled down, striking out the side in the second inning and allowing just two hits in the next five innings. Matt Basinger (Connellsville, Pa.) pitched two scoreless innings to earn his second career save. The Maryland bats were kept quiet until the fourth inning, when Sargent crushed his second home run of the year to deep centerfield. Out of Sargent's nine hits on the year, seven have been for extra bases (four doubles, two home runs and a triple), and his .568 slugging percentage is second on the team. Second on the team to Maxwell, who is in the zone at the plate. After hitting two home runs on Wednesday against William & Mary, Maxwell continued his power hitting with a solo shot in the fifth. The sophomore leads the Terps with six home runs, double his total from last season, and has 21 runs batted in, two away from his 2002 total.
Wayne Seder (1-2) took the loss for New York Tech, giving up four runs (three earned) and striking out six in six innings. Seder was not charged with any of the runs resulting from Sargent's home run, as it came with two outs following an error in the inning.
Both pitchers performed admirably, a surprise given the two teams' respective earned runs averages, which both stand near 7.00. Kane's performance comes on the heels of a seven-inning, two-run gem against Virginia. The sophomore has lowered his earned run average by 1.30 in his past two appearances. Terp pitching in general has been strong of late, with senior Steve Schmoll (Rockville, Md.) throwing a complete game shutout on Tuesday and senior Jared Stuart (Corning, N.Y.) allowing three runs in eight innings on Wednesday. NOTES: New York Tech assistant coach Jim Shevlin was ejected in the top of the seventh by home plate umpire George Frazee...Freshman Mike Costantino (Somerset, Mass.) extended his hitting streak to four games, and has hit safely in 15 of the last 17 games...He is hitting 7-for-11 (.636) over the past three games.
