Baseball Loses to VCU
April 2, 1998
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A ninth-inning rally by the Terps fell short as the Rams of VCU defeated Maryland, 5-3, this afternoon at Shipley Field.
Maryland scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to make the score 5-3, but left the bases loaded as VCU relief pitcher Brandon Inge struck out the side to gain his eighth save of the season.
Leading 1-0, the Rams scored three runs in the fifth inning as DH Cory Bauswell hit a double to left field with the bases loaded to score Cory Whitby and Inge. Kevin Elrod then singled to right field to score Jake Anthony to give the Rams a 4-0 advantage.
Trailing 5-1, Maryland loaded the bases in the ninth as lead-off hitter J.R. Thomas was hit by a pitch and two consecutive walks by VCU starter Matt Burch filled the bags. Inge then entered the game and promptly walked Chris Blue to force home Thomas. The Terps' other run scored as Michael D'Archangelo crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Burch picked up his sixth win of the season (6-2) and Maryland starter Tom Curtiss suffered his first loss (0-1).
Maryland's next game is tomorrow against Mt. St. Mary's. Game time is 3 p.m. at Shipley Field.
