Terrapin Baseball 'Walks Off' With First ACC Win Over Duke, 6-4

March 27, 2004

Box Score

BOWIE, Md. - The University of Maryland baseball team defeated Duke University by a score of 6-4 this afternoon at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie, Md., when junior Kevin Hart hit his second home run of the game in the bottom of the ninth to seal the win for the Terps.

Hart came up big for the Terrapins (10-12, 1-4 ACC) this afternoon with a 4-for-4 performance to drive in four runs against the Blue Devils (15-12, 3-2 ACC). He also came around to score three runs of his own.

Maryland struck in the first inning when sophomore Brian Jarosinski doubled to right field to score Hart who had hit a double of his own in the previous at bat.

The Terps tacked an additional two runs in the third inning with Hart hitting his solo homer and freshman Dan Melvin hitting an RBI single to bring in junior Jason Maxey.

After the Blue Devils tied the game at 3-3, the Terrapins came back in the seventh to bring in another run. Senior Anthony Buffone led off the inning with a double and later scored on a base hit by Hart.

Duke tied the game again in the eighth inning, but the Terrapins were determined not to let the win slip away. Buffone led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a double to left field and Hart followed that up by hitting his fourth home run and the Terps' first walk-off homer of the season.

Starting on the mound for Maryland, junior Chris Clem pitched seven innings, striking out five batters and allowing three runs without issuing a walk. Junior Justin Hulse earned his first win of the season with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

The Terrapins will close out their series with Duke on Sunday, March 28, at 1 p.m., at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie, Md.
