Baseball Defeats Old Dominion, 5-2

March 18, 2008

Box Score

NORFOLK, Va. - Maryland starting pitcher Brett Tidball allowed one earned run in 5 1/3 innings and the offense gave him all the support he needed with a four-run third inning to knock off the Old Dominion Monarchs, 5-2, in Norfolk, Va. Tuesday night.

Senior Chad Durakis (Cockeysville, Md./St. Pauls) opened the scoring with a two-run double down the left-field line in the top of the third inning off Old Dominion starter Cory Toth.

Durakis' double was the 39th of his career, moving him into a three-way tie for 10th place in school history with John McCurdy and Steve Oursler.

Three batters later, Gerry Spessard (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg) plated two more runs with a two-run single to right field, making it 4-0 Terps (9-9, 1-5).

Junior Mike Murphy (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Prep) drove in Maryland's final run with a solo home run to center field in the top of the fifth inning.

Tidball (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) earned his second win of the season, allowing only the one earned run on eight hits with one strikeout.

Senior center fielder Nick Jowers (Beltsville, Md./DeMatha Catholic) contributed two hits and a stolen base to the Terps' cause.

Kevin Biringer (Albuquerque, N.M./Bradley University) allowed one earned run in three innings of relief and freshman Matt Quinn (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) recorded the final two outs for his second save of the season.

Maryland travels to William & Mary for a 5 p.m. game Wednesday.
