Elon College Scores 6-3 Win Over Maryland Baseball
Feb. 25, 1998 ELON COLLEGE, NC- Mike Deike went 2-for-3, and belted his third homerun of the season, leading Elon College to a 6-3 win over the University of Maryland on Sunday afternoon at Newsome Field. With the win, Elon (8-2) avenges a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Terrapins on Sunday. Deike's two-run blast over Terps' starter Mike Wooden in the third inning put the Fightin' Christians up 2-0. Maryland (3-4) tied the score at 2-2 with two runs in the fourth and fifth innings, aided by four walks in those frames by Elon starter Chris Hughes. After a lead-off walk in the fifth ining, Larry Long later came around to score the tying run on a two-out double by Chris Blue. Elon regined the lead for good ion the bottom of the fifth, however, as Brad Beeson and Scott Brendle each had RBI each had RBI hits during the inning to give the Fightin' Christians a 4-2 lead. Trailing 6-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Maryland had the bases loaded with nobody out. Elon closer Chris Manesa, who earned his second save of the season, came in and struck out Adam Rodd, J.R. Thomas, and Larry Long to get out of the jam. Maryland stranded 12 base runners in the game. Eric Cantrell (1-0) came out of the bullpen and allowed one hit over 2 1/3 innings to earn his first win, while Wooden gave up six hits and six earned runs in the loss. Maryland was led offensively by Chris Blue, who went 1-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI, while Deike was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI.
