The University of Maryland (0-3) dropped their third game of the season today, falling to the College of Charleston (4-0) 8-3. After taking an early lead, the Terrapins fell behind the Cougars in the sixth inning and were unable to make a comeback.
The Terps got on the board early in the game, scoring two runs in the first inning. Anthony Buffone scored the first run on a wild pitch after he singled earlier in the inning. Mike Costantino knocked in Will Frazier for another run when he grounded out to third. Frazier had reached base on an error by the right fielder.
In the third inning, Costantino knocked in his second RBI of the game with a single up the middle. The hit scored Frazier who had previously stolen second for his first stolen base on the season.
Ben Pfinsgraff started the game strong for the Terrapins, striking out the first two batters he faced. He allowed his first runs in the third inning when the College of Charleston knocked in two runs, cutting the Terps' lead to 3-2. The Cougars struck again in the sixth inning loading up the bases on Pfinsgraff. He was able to get out of the jam allowing one run coming on a sacrifice fly to right field.
Maryland fell behind in the bottom of the sixth after Brian Hastings hit an RBI-double to the center field wall. Chris Bowen came in to relieve Pfinsgraff later in the sixth after the Cougars loaded up the bases. The first batter Bowen faced, Phillip Coker, hit a bases-clearing double to left center. The next Cougar batter, Byron Barber knocked Coker in with a double to right field, giving the Cougars an 8-3.
Seth Overbey pitched a scoreless inning of relief in the eighth inning. Terrapin catcher Bobby Ryan threw out two attempted base stealers, and allowed only one stolen base in the game.
Maryland will face Gardner-Webb at Patriots' Point Field in Mount Pleasant, S.C., on Sunday, Feb. 22, at 10:00 a.m.
