ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Maryland Terrapins fell to Evansville, 17-5, in their final game at the Pontiac Griffin Challenge on Sunday. The Terps threw seven pitchers and catcher Mike Moss hit his first career home run as they dropped to 1-5 on the season.
The Purple Aces (4-2) left 13 men on base and sent 12 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring six runs on seven hits to jump out to an early lead. Starter John Dischert lasted just two thirds of an inning and was charged with all six Evansville runs. He walked two and struck out one en route to his first loss of the season.
Evansville tacked on four runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth against reliever Brett Cecil to take a 12-0 lead.
The Terps got on board in the bottom of the fifth. Third baseman Dan Melvin singled up the middle and stole second base. First baseman Gerry Spessard knocked him in on a triple to right-center. He would later come around to score on a groundout by leftfielder Matt Maropis.
In the sixth inning, freshman Wink Nolan smacked a double off the top of the leftfield wall with two outs. Next up for Maryland was Moss, who replaced starting catcher Dan Mellies in the fifth. Making his second career plate appearance, the freshman from Bethesda, Md. crushed a 3-2 offering from Evansville's Cory Julian over the fence in left.
