Cheer in Second After Round One
Feb. 6, 2010
ATLANTA, Ga. - The Maryland competitive cheer team is in second place out of 12 college teams after round one at the Cheersport nationals competition at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. The Terps competed Saturday morning and fought through a technical difficulty to earn an overall round one score of 419.7. Mid-way throught the reigning Cheersport champions' routine, the Terps' music cut out, adding timing difficulty to the routine. In the sport of competitive cheer, teams usually get one chance to perform their routines in front of judges, regardless of technical difficulties or injuries. Despite the music issue, the Terrapins had to find a way to continue to compete. "I'm pleased with our score and positioning going into tomorrow," head coach Jarnell Bonds said. "The music stopping caused us to make a timing error and half of our second pyramid did not get to go up. It happens, technology fails and the show must go on." Sophomore Lauren Shannon executed her flipping entry and inverted pyramid, regardless of the music issue. GymTyme Louisville is in first place with a score of 430.9 and Oregon is behind the Terrapins with a 413.6. The Terrapins will compete in the second round of the Cheersport nationals tomorrow morning. They are competing in the College All Girl Level 6 division, along with teams from Oregon, Brock, McMaster, Ohio State, Louisville, Quinnipiac, N.C. State, East Carolina, Fairmont State, Georgia and Michigan State. The Terps are scheduled to compete Sunday morning at 10:33 a.m. Their awards ceremony is scheduled for Sunday at 12:30 p.m. CHEERSPORT DAY ONE STANDINGS: COLLEGE ALL-GIRL LEVEL 6
