ATLANTA, Ga. - The Maryland competitive cheer team is in first place after the preliminary round of competition at Cheersport nationals with a score of 423.5 out of a possible 450. NC State is currently in second place with a score of 399, followed closely by the University of Louisville with a score of 397.

The team hit its cleanest routine of the year. The near flawless performance earned perfect scores in both the jump and standing tumbling sections. The Terps also earned exceptionally high marks in the "Perfection of Routine" category, which is determined by the execution of tumbling, basket tosses, pyramids and partner stunts.

"The team as a whole maintained strong communication and was remarkably composed throughout warm ups and into their performance, especially considering their day started at 4:30 this morning," said head coach Jarnell Bonds. The team left their hotel at 5:30 a.m. to be ready to report to the warm up mat by 7:30. The Terrapins took the competition floor just an hour later.

Sophomore Samantha Johnson nailed all of her tumbling, including a standing full twisting back flip and a standing two handspring to double full twist. Another sophomore, Britney Fonfara, beautifully performed the top level of the routine's second pyramid, a position that she was put in only two days ago.

Senior Meredith Walkiewicz perfectly executed a forward flipping skill called a "bird flip," which she had been struggling with the week leading up to competition. Walkiewicz also had an important save in the team's first pyramid, when she secured a top level flyer that was off balance. Senior Dana Smith exhibited strong leadership as she helped her teammates remain focused and driven during warm ups and onto the competition floor.

Today's performance will account for 40 percent of the team's total score, while tomorrow's performance will account for 60 percent. The Terps will compete in the final round of competition tomorrow morning at 9:10. Visit www.cheersport.net to watch the performance live.
