Terps Host Maryland Invitational Track
March 29, 2012
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Terrapins will be one of a dozen area collegiate track and field teams competing in the Maryland Invitational on Saturday at the Kehoe Track Complex.
Fresh off its season-opening performance against a nationally ranked field at the UCF Invitational last weekend, the Terrapins will be using the home meet as an important preparation for the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Championships, which come very early in the season (April 19-21).
"We're only three weeks away from the ACC Championships, so we'll spend this week getting ready," said head coach Andrew Valmon, who will also serve as the men's head coach for Team USA at this summer's London Olympics.
"We'll have some key people in off events to do some speed work and to work on their strength," Valmon said. "We'll continue to prepare for the conference meet. After a great showing at UCF, we'll want to capitalize on that momentum."
The Maryland Invitational, which starts at 10 a.m. both on the field and on the track, is one of two home events for the Terrapins during the outdoor season.
"This will give our student-athletes a chance to compete at home in front of family, friends and our alumni," Valmon said.
Melville and Hill are also entered in the high jumps on Saturday, with Hill also entered in the men's javelin. Cromartie is expected to compete in the 1,500t.
Other Terrapins to watch on Saturday include three-time All-American Kiani Profit, who is entered in four events and a relay, senior men's hurdler Zack Ray, senior distance runner Julie Fricke who competed last fall in the NCAA Cross Country Nationals, and freshman jumper Thea LaFond. Melville led five Terrapins, including LaFond, who placed in the top 10 in the women's high jump at UCF last Saturday.
NOTE: Fans and teams are suggested to avoid the Route 1 entrances to campus due to other events. Best access to the track complex will be from Adelphi Road near University Boulevard. Fans should also note that parking lots will be full due to the Maryland men's lacrosse match against Virginia beginning at 1 p.m.
