Feb. 25, 2012
BOSTON, Mass. - Senior Zack Ray finished fifth in the men's 60-meter hurdles and led a Terrapin 4x400 relay that posted a season-best time to lead University of Maryland performances Saturday in the final day of the ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Boston College.
The Maryland men picked up a dozen points on Saturday to finish ninth in the team standings with 28 points. The Terrapins improved on the 11th-place finish indoors in each of the last two years.
Maryland's women's team finished eighth with 35 points after adding five to their total on Saturday. The placing and point total were the best for the Terrapin women since 2006.
Ray qualified eighth on Friday for the final in the 60 hurdles and moved up to fifth with a mark of 8.25 seconds on Saturday. In the last event on Saturday, he joined John Davenport, Chris Brown and Shawn David to placed sixth in the 4x400 relay at 3:16.36, posting a season-best and the fifth-best mark all-time indoors.
Also on Saturday, sophomore thrower Josh Haghighi had a breakthrough performance for the second straight day. After finishing fourth Friday in the weight throw, he placed sixth in the men's shot put on Saturday. His mark of 56-6.75 is eighth on Maryland's all-time list and is the best by a Terrapin since 1983, matching his historic effort from Friday.
Kyle Graves finished seventh for the Terrapins in the mile in 4:11.28. Graves had posted a strong qualifying mark on Friday, but fell victim to a slower pace in Saturday's final.
Junior thrower Moriah Young added to her point total at the ACC Indoor with a strong mark Saturday in the women's shot put. Young added 14 inches to her previous career-best with a 48-3.25 mark that bumped her into fourth place all-time.
Julie Fricke posted a career-best in the women's 3,000 to finish 16th in 9:55.31, moving into eighth all-time at Maryland indoors.
Maryland will compete next weekend in a last-chance meet in attempts to earn marks for the NCAA Indoor Nationals on March 8-10.
