This Week's Questions:
Hey Testudo, I was wondering if the Maryland Football team has a yellow uniform like the basketball team? (Ryan)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Ryan, great question! The football team does not have a yellow uniform for games, but they do have a yellow uniform for practice! Players wearing yellow uniforms during practice cannot be touched. Those players are most likely the quarterbacks or injured players.
What is the exact address for the Comcast Center? (Shawnie)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Shawnie! The exact address for Comcast Center is 1 Terrapin Trail, College Park, Maryland, 20742. I hope this helps you get to Comcast Center to catch some basketball games this season! See you there! Go Terps!
Who are we going to play in our first home football game this season? (Danielle)
Testudo's Reply:
Good question Danielle! Our first home football game is on Saturday, September 12th against James Madison. I can't wait for football season to start! I hope you have your season tickets so you can help cheer us on!! It's going to be a great year!
Hey Testudo, I want to play somewhere in the ACC for baseball. Terp or Tar Heel? I can't decide. (John)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi John! Good question John! Without a doubt, Maryland is the place to be for great baseball! Maryland Coach Terry Rup led the Terps to one of its best seasons in program history just last season! Maryland won 30 games and even beat a No. 3 UNC team. Also, former Terps Justin Maxwell, Kevin Hart, and Mike Rabelo reached the major leagues. Hope this helps with making your decision! GO TERPS!
Testudo, I am doing a project on your basketball team and I was wondering if you can tell me how Maryland came up with the team name the Terps? (Kirwin)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Kirwin! I would love nothing more than to tell you about how I came to be the beloved mascot and team name of the University of Maryland. It all started in 1932 when the football coach and president of the university named Curley Bryd changed the school mascot to the state reptile, the diamondback terrapin. Terrapin was then shortened to the nickname "Terp", and I was given the name Testudo. There are 5 bronze statues of me located throughout campus, and students like to rub my nose for good luck! I think the Terp is a great mascot! I hope this helps with your project. FEAR THE TURTLE!
Hi Testudo, How long has Byrd Stadium existed? (Deion)
Testudo's Reply:
Great question Deion! Byrd Stadium has been around for almost 60 years! It opened on September 30, 1950. The stadium holds over 50,000 fans, and you can even see the Washington Monument from the top on a clear day. Did you know that Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip watched their first football game at Byrd Stadium in the 1950's? How cool! Many great games have been played here since its opening. Maryland even won two National Championship in 1951 and then again in 1953. Presently, Ralph Friedgen just finished up his 8th season as head Coach. Thanks for your question and football season will be here before we know it! GO TERPS!
Testudo - where exactly does the band begin it's march to the stadium before the game and when/where does Fridge and the team join them? ( Jim)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Jim! I believe you are talking about Terp Alley! Approximately 2.5 hours before kickoff at every home game the Maryland Terrapins football team will walk down Terp Alley on their way to Byrd Stadium. Join your fellow Maryland fans, Testudo, the Spirit Squad and Marching Band for a Terrapin tradition as we line Terp Alley to show our support for the team as they mentally prepare for the challenge ahead. Terp Alley runs from the top of Field House Drive (at the traffic circle) near the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center and Ludwig Soccer Field) to the steps leading down to the Gossett Football Team House (GFTH) on the south side of Byrd Stadium.
Hey Testudo, We have season tickets to football. Gary Williams always has a "practice" session before at least one football game during the season which is open to the public, can you tell me when the practice session is going to be?
(Deb)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Deb! Good question! This year Gary Williams will be holding a practice session at noon on Saturday, October 25th at Comcast Center! Please come out and see the team!
Hi Testudo, How old are you? (Chris)
Testudo's Reply:
Great question Chris! Testudo was born back in 1932! This year that would make me 76 years young! It's always GREAT to be a TERP! No matter how old you are!!!!!
Hey Testudo, What is the "hype" music that you play over the loud speaker at Byrd Stadium on third down situations? ( Greg)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Greg! The music is Requiem for a Tower Movement 4- Corner Stone Cues!

Hi Testudo, I was at a soccer game this fall and had my photo taken with you. Is there anywhere that I could purchase photos of events at Maryland? (Jessica)
Testudo's Reply:
Great question Jessica! There is a place on www.umterps.com under the Fan Zone tab where you can view and purchase photos! I'm not sure if the photo is there but if it is, I hope they got my best side!!!
Dear Testudo I am doing a project on you for school and need to ask you some questions. My first question is what do you like to do on your free time, and where were you born? What is your favorite food? What are your favorite TV shows and movies? (Carole Ann)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Carole Ann! Thanks for doing a project on yours truly! I was born right here in Maryland! In my spare time I like to go to the Rec Center here on campus and swim to keep in shape. I have to be ready to cheer the Terps on now that fall sports are starting! My favorite foods are pizza and burgers. I love to watch Ninja Turtles, Animal Planet, and Franklin on TV and I love to watch movies about super heros!
Hi Testudo, What is the M Club? (Elaine)
Testudo's Reply:
Great question Elaine! The M Club Foundation at the University of Maryland, one of the oldest letter winner clubs in the country, was founded in 1923. We have a proud tradition of "Athletes Helping Athletes". The M Club exists within the Athletic Department to provide former Terrapin athletic letter winners the opportunity to continue to be involved in Maryland athletics once their eligibility has expired.
What high school did Dan Groot go to and in what state? (Andrew)
Testudo's Reply:
Andrew, lacrosse player Dan Groot went to Canandaigua High School in Canandaigua, New York.
Who played for the Terps as their football QB, then went to the NFL to play for Buffalo and come back from a 35-3 deficit to beat the Houston Oilers, 38-35 in OT? (Josh B)
Testudo's Reply:
Great question, Josh! The answer to that would be Frank Reich. Reich led the Buffalo Bills to the biggest comeback victory in both college and professional football. How cool is that! Frank Reich was drafted from the University of Maryland in the 3rd round in 1985. After the 1998 season, Reich retired from football and became a motivational speaker. Reich played in the NFL for 13 years. He sounds like an amazing athlete, wouldn't you agree? Hope you can make it to some of the football games this fall. Let's go Terps!
Hi. Who do you think is the best player on the Terps team? I like Kristi Toliver. You? (Lily D.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey there, Lily! This is a really tough question because I think all of the Terps are amazing athletes. Kristi Toliver has an average of 4.5 career assists per game, which is the fourth-best in the history of the program. Wow! Marissa Colemen is another phenomenal player and has one of the top 15 scoring and rebounding averages in school history. Laura Harper was also an important member on the Terps team - she is ranked third in the Maryland career records with 150 blocks. Another outstanding Terp is Crystal Langhorne. She had her jersey number honored on the Terps' Senior Day on Feb. 24, 2008, which was the first-ever player at Maryland to have her number raised to the rafters while still active. She is Maryland's all-time leading scorer and rebounder. How impressive! I like all of the members on the team. It's too hard to pick just one! Come to some of the basketball games this season and we can cheer for the Terps together!
I heard someone asked you if they would marry you, and I was wondering if in fact you were married. Are you? (Lily D.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Lily! No, I'm unfortunately not married. Between rooting for 27 different sports and writing back to my loyal fans like you, I don't have enough time to have a family right now. I'm still young and there are so many things for me to do on my schedule! Maybe once I get older I will find a Lady Testudo for myself, but not now. Hope to see you at the games this season! Go Terps!
What is the song you guys played at halftime last year for basketball? I know it was a while ago, but my AAU team is making a warm up CD and none of us can remember the name. (Braelynn)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Braelynn! I'm so happy to hear you came to a basketball game last year! We play tons of songs during halftime, so I'm not exactly sure which particular song you're thinking about. I found a few songs that we used from last year's games so hopefully you'll find the song you've been looking for.
1. Zombie Nation - Kernkraft 400
2. Angels and Airwaves- The Adventure
3. Jim Jones- We Fly High
4. T.I.- Big Things
5. U2- Beautiful Day
6. Foo-Fighters My Hero
Hope this helps you! Good luck on your AAU team! Go Terps!
Hi again! How did Crystal Langhorne pick Maryland? She was so good she could have gone anywhere, but why Maryland? (Lily D.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey there again Lily! That's a great question. Crystal Langhorne actually didn't start playing basketball until eighth grade, but once she got the hang of it she was unstoppable. After playing at Willingboro High School in New Jersey for four years, she was pursued by dozens of Division 1 colleges around the country. Even though Coach Frese was in the process of rebuilding the program, Langhorne picked Maryland and made a decision that she has never regretted. She wanted to be a part of something new and we were so lucky to have her!
I'm a huge Maryland fan and I wanted to know when the 2008 women's basketball schedule comes out. I'm really excited to see Kristi Tolliver and Marissa Coleman play as seniors and I can't wait to go to basketball camp at Maryland and for next season! (Jaclyn)
Testudo's Reply:
It's great to hear that you're such a big Maryland fan! I'm excited for the women's basketball upcoming season too! Unfortunately, we don't have the schedule yet for the 2008-2009 season. If you check back on http://www.umterps.com at the end of August, it will be listed for you. I can't wait to see the Terps play this year! Hope to see you at a few games cheering on the team with me! Good luck at basketball camp!
Hi Testudo! What camps do you recommend for me at Maryland? I play soccer, horseback riding, kayaking, and play the clarinet. How are the Maryland band camps? I am looking into some and I was wondering if the Maryland ones were the ones for me. Go Terps!! (Lily D)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Lily! I think that all of the sports camps at Maryland are extremely beneficial and will truly challenge your athletic ability. We do offer soccer games held by our men's soccer coach, Sasho Cirovski. We don't offer any horseback riding camps, but we do have a Terrapin Trail Club that will do exciting activities such as whitewater rafting, kayaking, and horseback riding. You play the clarinet? That's great! You must be a really talented person to do so many sports and activities! Luckily, we have one of the nation's most respected training camps for young orchestral musicians, like yourself! The National Orchestral Institute at the University Of Maryland School Of Music offers a four-week experience in orchestral musicianship and professional development for musician. What does Kristi Toliver and the rest of the Lady Terps do in their free time? What about during the off-season? (Lily D)
Testudo's Reply:
Great question, Lily! The life of a women's college basketball player can be very busy! Between practices, lifting, and classes, I'm sure the Lady Terps don't have too much free time. They are all very friendly and extremely talented women so during their free time, they hang out with one another and listen to music. With such a busy schedule, I'm sure they try to relax whenever they get the chance. Basketball player, Jade Perry, actually has a talent for doing yo-yo tricks! Aside from playing basketball, Crystal Langhorne is known to be a great singer! Marissa Coleman likes to practice her singing and dancing when she's not on the court. Kristi Toliver likes to sleep, watch movies, and play Nintendo on her days off.
Do you know Miss Liline in Staten Island, New York? Can you come to my school? Go Terps! (Joseph)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey there, Joseph! I don't think I've ever met Miss Liline before, but I'm sure she's a wonderful teacher. I would love to come visit you and your friends at school, but unfortunately, I'm a very busy turtle! I have to make sure I'm at all Maryland sporting events so I can root for my Terps! Take a trip down to Maryland so we can show our spirit together! This fall, you should come watch our men's football team or one of the soccer games. They are always so thrilling to watch! Great to hear that you're a fan. Let's go Maryland!
Who is the all time leading goal scorer in Maryland Men's Lacrosse history? (Chris)
Testudo's Reply:
That's an awesome question Chris! Joe Walters has scored the most career goals in Terrapin Lacrosse history. Walters scored 153 goals during his career as a Terp, which spanned from 2003 through 2006. Walters also holds the Terrapin record for most career points with 227. Hopefully our Terps can keep scoring more and more goals! Go Terps!
In all sports combined, how many national titles does the University of Maryland have? (Tim)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Tim! In all sports combined, the Terrapins have won 33 national championships! Both the Women's and Men's Lacrosse teams have each won ten of these championships! Two of our most famous national title victories include the 2002 Men's Basketball NCAA Championship and the 2006 Women's Basketball championship. Let's keep this winning tradition going! Go Terps!
Can you take the metro to the Comcast Center? (Ty)
Testudo's Reply:
That's a great question Ty! Unfortunately, there is not a metro stop at the Comcast Center. However, you can certainly get to the Comcast Center from the College Park Metro Stop on the green line. From the College Park Station, you can take the 104 College Park Metro Bus to the Stamp Student Union, walk over to the Regents Garage bus stop and hop on the Campus Connector North, which stops at the Comcast Center. All this traveling is certainly worth it to see our Terrapins play at the Comcast Center. Go Terps!
Can you give me five reasons why I would want to go to the University of Maryland? (Tiffany)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Tiffany! Although there are a lot more than five reasons to go to the University of Maryland, here's a few of my favorite!
1) Did you know the University of Maryland is a top 20 public research institution? That means that we have some of the smartest people in the country right here on campus!
2) In the last two years alone Maryland has captured a whopping total of SIX national championships! Wow!
3) Our beautiful campus! It's particularly amazing in the springtime when the trees and flowers are in bloom and I can take a nap in my shell on the pedestrian mall in the center of campus!
4) Maryland school spirit! The Princeton Review ranked Maryland #1 in the entire country for students who pack the stadiums-that's a lot of school spirit!
5) Location, location, location! Maryland is right next to Washington D.C. so when I want to sightsee (a terrapin likes to explore!) it's only a few miles down the road!
These are just a few of the reasons why Maryland is the BEST school! Oh, and because I'm their mascot! GO TERPS!
Will you marry me? (Aniyah)
Testudo's Reply:
I think you're the first person to ask me that question Aniyah! Unfortunately, between cheering on all of the 27 different sports we have going on here at Maryland I barely have time to clean my shell! Plus, I'm still just a young terrapin and I don't think settling down just yet is in the cards for me. Maybe one day you'll meet just the right Terp for you! Hope to see you at the games! GO TERPS!
Hi sir. I am a loyal Terrapin fan, living far away while trying to keep in touch. I am 14 years old. My father teaches me to play ball in West Virginia, and I am getting better every day. I wanted to ask you if you get sweaty in that turtle uniform, because wow, I can't imagine going round in that for the whole game...plus, I love them Terps! I bless you all. (Jess B.)
Testudo's Reply:
Wow Jess! I can't tell you how happy it makes me that you're still such a fan even though you live so far away! What I wear during the games is what I always wear, even when I'm not cheering on the Terps but you're right! It sure does get awfully hot under that shell when I'm jumping around and rooting on the Terps! And keep practicing-maybe you'll play basketball for Maryland one day! GO TERPS!
Hey Testudo!! I've been a Terp fan since 2000 and I want to know how you think the men's basketball team will do this season? (Erika)
Testudo's Reply:
Wow Erika! Eight years as a Terps fan sure is a lot! I'm glad we have such dedicated fans like you out there to support us! I think the men's upcoming basketball season will be phenomenal since we have so many returning key players such as Eric Hayes and Greivis Vasquez. Also freshmen who had amazing seasons like Cliff Tucker, Braxton Dupree and Adrian Bowie will be there getting lots of playing time and experience! I sure can't wait to shine my shell and cheer for them at Comcast Center next season, hope to see you there! GO TERPS!
I was sad to see the Terps lose to Stanford, but I still think they are the best team out there!!! Do you agree? (Fan)
Testudo's Reply:
We were all sad here too when the Terps lost to Stanford but there's still no doubt in my mind that they're still the best team! Next year Marissa Coleman and Kristi Toliver will be returning as well as some key freshmen such as Marah Strickland. We are bringing in a top-10 ranked recruiting class as well! I definitely think that we'll win the National Championship next season! GO TERPS!
Hi again. I want to send some mail to my favorite Terps player Kristi Toliver. How do I do that? I was wondering how you send mail to the players. What address do I send the letters to? Or should I write to them by e-mail? (Lily D.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Lily! I'm sure Kristi Toliver would love to know that she's your favorite player and I'm sure she and the rest of the team would love to hear from you! It would be best to send any fan letters through the mail, the address to the Comcast Center where the Women's Basketball office is located is actually already written in a question I answered a few days ago! Just scroll down to find it! And remember, although Kristi and the team love hearing from enthusiastic fans such as yourself, they're extremely busy between balancing school and basketball so they can't always respond to all of the letters they get. We look forward to hearing from you! GO TERPS!
Will Marissa Coleman be back next season? (Richard W.)
Testudo's Reply:
What's up Richard? Marissa Coleman will definitely be back next season! Sadly, it will be her last and final season here at Maryland but we look forward to her having her most stellar season yet! Hope you come join me to cheer her on at the Comcast Center, season tickets for the 2008-2009 season are on sale now! GO TERPS!
Whats the address of the Comcast Center? (Brandon)
Testudo's Reply: Hey Brandon! The address to Comcast Center is: Comcast Center Terrapin Trail College Park, MD 20742 I love to hear from our fans. Thanks for writing and make sure to say hi to me next time you are at the University of Maryland. Go Terps!
I live in Boston, and I wanted to know how you guys feel about losing Langhorne and Harper this year? I love the Terps and want you guys to come to Boston soon. Oh, and a little late but way to go in 2006! (Rebecca)
Testudo's Reply: Hey Rebecca! Langhorne and Harper are both excellent players that really helped Maryland and our team, but there are still a lot of strong Terps left on the team and we have a very talented freshman class coming in, so Maryland will still be playing great basketball like they always have. Next year's schedule is not out yet, but I will do my best to get the Terps to go to Boston for you. Make sure to keep checking umterps.com for updates. It's never too late to congratulate the Terps for their 2006 National Championship and we will definitely to our best to do it again in 2009. GO TERPS!
Are you a diamondback terrapin? I'm doing a school project and I would like to know if you are a diamondback terrapin. (Brianna)
Testudo's Reply: WOW! It makes me feel so good when people know what kind of Terrapin I am, you must be a really good fan. I am a diamondback turtle, which just happen to be one of the coolest turtles in the world. Good luck on your school project and tell all of your classmates that I said hi. Make sure to keep rooting for the Terps!
Who do you think will be the starting quarterback? (Francesca D.)
Testudo's Reply: Hey Francesca! No one will know for sure who the starting quarterback will be going into next season, but there are a lot of possibilities. All of our quarterbacks are playing really well and both Steffy and Turner played excellent in the Spring football game last Saturday, so it is really up for grabs. I am excited to see the Terps back in action this Fall. GO TERPS!
Hey Testudo! I like Candace Parker, bur I love Kristi Toliver!!! I really hope to meet her one day. She's my idol. What I wanted to ask was, are all the girls on the basketball team like best friends? I really hope they win next year. GO TERPS!!!! (Cid T.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Cid! I really hope that they win too, they work really hard I know they will try their best. I love cheering on the Terps at all of their games. All of the girls on the basketball team are very close to each other and that is part of the reason that makes Maryland basketball so strong. Make sure to keep cheering for the Terps because we love our fans. M-A-R-Y-L-A-N-D Maryland Will Win!
Hi again! I bet my chances for you picking another question of mine are slim, but I have another. Why do the TV sports stations rarely televise Maryland women's basketball away games? Is there something you can do so they will? I watch EVERY game that is on TV, but few ever are. I LOVE to watch the Terps play, and I think other people do too!! (Lily D.)
Testudo's Reply: HEY LILY! Maybe if you keep asking such great questions, we can get a chance to answer them all! It's great to see such a dedicated fan! This season the Maryland Women's Basketball team played on television 11 times, not including the NCAA tournament games. Of the 11, 3 were home games and 8 were on the road! It's hard to have every game televised since there are so many great teams out there, but as long as we have the support from fans like you, there is no way that the Terps will lose any air time. Go Terps!!
How is our lacrosse team doing this year? Do you think we have what it takes to win a national title? Go Terps!(Terps Fan)
Testudo's Reply: Hey there Terps fan! GREAT QUESTION! Both of our Maryland lacrosse teams are doing fantastic this season! The Men are ranked #5 and are 8-4 overall and 2-1 in the ACC. The Women are ranked #2 and are 14-1 overall and 4-1 in the ACC. It's all about hard work and determination and both of our teams are really giving their all. I definitely think they have what it takes to bring home the national titles this year! Go Terps!!
What division are your sports? (Monica)
Testudo's Reply: Hey Monica! I love your question because I feel like it is something that many people probably don't know but wouldn't think to ask. The University of Maryland is a Division 1A school with regard to all of its sports. We are also in the Atlantic Coast Conference which means we play schools like UNC, University of Miami, Florida State and so many more. Being in Division 1A and in the ACC always guarantees an exciting and competitive game no matter what the sport. Hope to see you at one of Maryland's games soon! Go Terps!
Are there athletic scholarships for women? (Essence)
Testudo's Reply: Hey Essence. YES there absolutely are athletic scholarships for women! There are opportunities for all of our women athletes (just like our men) to receive financial assistance in all of the sports here at Maryland. Scholarships, for all athletes, are incentives to keep them working hard and are a way for us to thank them for all of their time and dedication. Go Terps!
I was so excited to watch the WNBA Draft and I'm very glad Crystal Langhorne and Laura Harper were drafted in the Top 10!! Will you be going to any of Crystal's games since she is playing so close by (for the Washington Mystics)? My birthday is this month so I will be asking for tickets to her game! (Rachel)
Testudo's Reply: Hey Rachel! HAPPY BIRTHDAY (I hope I didn't miss it)! All of us here at Maryland were, and still are, really excited to see 2 of our seniors get drafted into the WNBA. Luckily for all of us Crystal will be so close and I'm sure I won't be the only Terp to go and check out of one her games! Hopefully I'll see you there one day! Even though Laura Harper is going to be farther away, she is still a Terrapin Forever and I will follow her career just as I will Crystal's. GOOD LUCK LADIES! I'm sure they will make us proud! Go Terps!
Next season, do you think Maryland has what it takes, without their seniors, to win a national title? I think with Kristi and Marissa still there, they have a chance and Marah S. is also doing really well. (Lily D.)
Testudo's Reply: Hey Lily! It is hard to believe that we have so many great seniors leaving after this season. Don't forget though that our Terps are a great team overall and with Kristi, Marissa and Marah returning, we have a sure fire chance at winning that national title! We are also bringing in some strong recruits that will help complete the lineup. The Terps always need fans like you to pump them up and get them ready for their next season so make sure you come out to the games and keep on supporting the Maryland Terrapins! GO TERPS!
Does your nose hurt from getting patted by eager fans, and players before games? When did this tradition start? (Ray W.)
Testudo's Reply: Hey Ray! It's funny you ask about my nose hurting, because getting it petted by fans, players and students is actually my favorite part about being the Maryland mascot. It is a way for everyone to show me just how much they love Maryland and all of our teams on campus! The tradition started in 1933 and I will make sure it continues on for years! GO TERPS!
Have you actually hung out with the women's basketball team? (Jenna A.)
Testudo's Reply: Hey Jenna! I spend a lot of time with the Terps basketball team and have gotten to know them really well. They are really hard working and a lot of fun. Sometimes they even ask me to hang out and shoot hoops with them during practice. Not only do I get to hang out with the women's basketball team, but I also get to spend a lot of time with all of the athletes at Maryland. It's a lot of hard work to visit all 27 teams but I sure do love my job. I guess I'm a pretty luck Terrapin. GO TERPS!
Hey Testudo! I love all 27 Maryland sports but what sport do you think will do the best this year? (Jacob H.)
Testudo's Reply: Hi Jacob! It makes me so happy to see someone who loves Maryland as much as I do. The 27 Sports here at Maryland represent 1 Team and that is what makes them so special. When you love the Terps as much as I do, it's impossible to choose who I think will do the best each year. I go to every game, rain or shine, and root for all 27 teams in hopes that they do their very best. We've got great athletes here at Maryland and I know they work hard to win. Thanks for all of the support and make sure to come visit me at one of our 27 team's games! GO TERPS!
I question your honesty! These are not new questions and responses. They have been the same for two or three weeks. I've been an honesty and loyal fan since the early 70's, join the club! GO TERPS! (Fan)
Testudo's Reply:
You're right, it has been awhile since I have answered the e-mails I get from my fellow Terp fans! But with all of the excitement with Maryland hosting the first two rounds of the Women's NCAA Basketball Tournament - and then hitting the road to Spokane - I've been a busy Terrapin! Good thing I've been working extra hard though because the Terps made it all the way to the Elite Eight! GO TERPS!
Hi Testudo - Do you have any plans to run for Mascot of the Year again? You were robbed of the title last time around. (Jimmy)
Testudo's Reply:
Thanks Jimmy, I really appreciate your support! Thanks to fans like you I will be running again this year for Mascot of the Year! Just make sure you vote for me! GO TERPS!
Is Maryland's Men's Lacrosse goalie a freshman? (Cool Kid)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Cool Kid, I like the name! No, actually the Men's Lacrosse goalie, Brian Phipps, is a sophomore this year. However, he did make his debut as a freshman when two upperclassmen goalies were injured last year and he's been a star player ever since. Last year he snagged awards for ACC Freshman of the Year, All-ACC Academic Team and Preseason Honorable Mention All-American. Make sure you catch him live in action at one of the Lacrosse games this year! GO TERPS!
Hi Testudo! I live in England and love American sports. Since I started to follow NCAA football I don't know why but I started to become a Terps fan, I wear my Maryland t-shirt with your picture on it with pride around London. Please could you let me know 1) whether I have made a good decision being a Terp fan and 2) whether you have ever been to England on Holiday? Thank you. Kind regards. (Simon W.)

Simon-I am ecstatic that there are Terp fans across the pond! I'm so flattered you wear a shirt with me on it around London, I'm blushing under my shell! And don't worry, you definitely made the right decision to be a Terps fan, you couldn't have picked a better school to be a fan of! To answer your second question, I haven't been to England yet, although I've always wanted to-maybe one day I will ,now that I know there are Terps fans there! Cheers and GO TERPS!
Hey Testudo have you ever broken a bone because I just broke my leg. And also have you ever hurt another mascot maybe a Blue Devil or a Tar Heel hopefully. (Marty D.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Marty! I actually have never broken a bone. My tough shell does a great job of protecting me. I'm pretty lucky to have it to be honest. As for hurting other mascots...although they are our rivals, it's important to keep my cool. I leave it all up to the teams...the way to really beat them is out on the field or court. Thanks for writing in! Go Terps!
Where is Ludwig Field? I want to watch a lacrosse game there. Is it on campus? (Robert V.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Robert! Ludwig Field is on campus. If you enter campus through the main gate go around the Big M traffic circle and continue straight on Campus Drive. You will pass by the Stamp Student Union and Cole Field House on your right. Once you arrive in Lot 1, continue going straight until you can't go anymore. Make a right and Ludwig Field is on your left. Lacrosse games there are awesome! Hopefully I'll see you at a game!
Hi Testudo!! I was wondering...what # rank are the Terps? Are they even ranked this year? I LOVE the Terps! Kristi T. is my role model. Keep on rocking Terps!(Sidney C.)
Testudo's Reply:
WOW! I'm sure Kristi will be really excited to hear how much you look up to her. As of February 25, the Women's Basketball Team was ranked #4/5. They are 28-2 overall and 12-1 in ACC play. Don't forget that Maryland's Women Basketball is hosting the 1st and 2nd rounds of the NCAA tournament on March 23 and 25! Make sure to come and join me while we cheer them on! GO TERPS!
Why should I continue to love Maryland when they aren't doing well in basketball? (Andre W.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Andre! There are tons of reasons to keep on loving Maryland and the Terps. We know how to bring excitement to each and every game and we have quite a few varsity sports teams that have won national titles in the past few years, some even more than once! It's important to know that the Terps focus on team work and fighting to be the best that they can be. Despite a few losses here and there, it's the fact that they never give up that is what we really admire. I am proud to be a Terp...and I wouldn't want to be any other mascot. GO TERPS!
About how much do football tickets cost on average? (Kevin)
Testudo's Reply:
It sounds like you're excited for football season already--I am too! Season tickets for football cost between $123-$285 for the general public, depending on how old you are (youth vs. adult) and where you sit. If you come with your family, you can get a Family 4-Pak for only $134.50 per ticket! Also, if you're a Terrapin Club member, you can get season tickets that range between $185-$285 (visit www.terrapinclub.com for more details on how to become a member). Individual game tickets and prices are not on sale yet and won't be released until the summer so don't forget to check back for those! I look forward to seeing you at the games, Kevin! GO TERPS!
Hi Testudo - Did Coach Brenda Frese have her twins yet? And, what were they? GO TERPS!! (Jackie B.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Jackie! You asked just in time! Brenda Frese just had her twins on Sunday, February 17--two healthy baby boys! Both boys, Markus William and Tyler Joseph, are doing well and are spending lots of time with their mother. Although she isn't sure when she will be returning, don't forget to congratulate her the next time you see her at a game! GO TERPS!
Hey Testudo, I'm a huge Maryland fan of all the 27 sports Maryland has. I'm really excited about the Byrd Stadium expansion, and was wondering if the Tyser Tower expansion has been started and if there is a way for me to follow the stadium's construction progress. (Daryll)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Daryll! I can't tell you how happy I am to hear from someone else who is as excited about all of the Maryland teams as I am! The Byrd Stadium renovation began in Fall 2007 and is expected to run until Fall 2009. If you go to http://www.greatexpectationsathletics.com/ you can see exactly what the planned construction process is! Some of the men's lacrosse games this year are being hosted in Byrd Stadium so if you go to them you can see firsthand what they've already done so far! Hope to see you soon! GO TERPS!
Do you have a brother or sister? (Griffin)
Testudo's Reply:
Great question Griffin! I consider all Terp fans are my brothers and sisters so I actually have thousands of them! Including you! GO TERPS!
Do you like the Comcast Center? How much do you like Terps' basketball? (Patrick N.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Patrick! Awesome question! I love the Comcast Center! It is a great facility and perfect for me to get really hyped up for the games! I love when winter comes around so I can cheer on the men's and women's basketball teams! I'm especially excited for this March when I get to watch the Comcast Center host the first two rounds of the women's NCAA basketball tournament on March 23 and 25! Do you have your tickets yet? GO TERPS!
Hey Testudo, I was wondering, how likely is it for the Maryland Women's basketball team to play on their home court during 1st & 2nd round of the NCAA tournament? And what circumstances would let or allow them to play here? (Mickie J.)
Testudo's Reply:
Am I glad you asked that question Mickie! The Maryland Women's basketball team will actually be hosting the 1st and 2nd rounds of the NCAA tournament at the Comcast Center and they will definitely be playing on their home court during these rounds! So make sure you come out and support them. Tickets are on sale now. You can call the ticket office at 1-800-IM-A-TERP or visit umterps.com. Go Terps!
Hey Testudo, what does it take for a basketball player's jersey to be retired? I've noticed Lindsey Harding and Ivory Latta have gotten theirs retired...could Shay Doron be a likely candidate for her jersey to get retired too? (Lita)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Lita! That's a great question! In order for a basketball player's jersey to be honored they have to demonstrate excellent basketball skills, break a lot of records, show integrity, and practice good sportsmanship and teamwork! Shay Doron, who did all of these things and much more, is actually getting her number honored during a special halftime ceremony at the Women's Basketball game on February 8! She definitely earned it!
Do you go to road and home games or just home games? (Bradley S.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Bradley! Of course I go to all of the home games but I also try to go to as many away games as I can! I go to all of the away football games including the bowl games as well as the away men's NCAA tournament games! Being a mascot can be hard work but it sure is fun! GO TERPS!
How old is point guard Kristi Toliver? (Terry)
Testudo's Reply:
Awesome question Terry! Kristi Toliver was born on January 27, 1987. That means she just celebrated her 21st birthday! Make sure to wish her a happy belated birthday! Go Terps!
Hey!!! I am the biggest Terp fan in the WORLD!!! I love the Lady Terps!!! I am going to 12 b-ball camps over the summer! My question is how would I be able to meet the players after each of their games??? (terps girl123)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey terps girl123--It sounds like you are a really big Terps fan and basketball player! Congratulations! While you can't meet the players after every one of their games there are certain games where there's an autograph session afterward! Tomorrow, February 8, is the last autograph signing session after the Terps' home game versus Virginia. The first 250 fans who go to Heritage Hall in Comcast Center after the game get to attend! Special guest and former Terp Shay Doron will be there too! So make sure you go support the Terps tomorrow! GO TERPS!
Will Maryland win the National Championships this year? (Chris A.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Chris! Maryland has 27 different sports that are all trying to win the national championship, but nothing is a guarantee. The Terps are the best fans in the nation, so with your support and our hard working athletes anything can happen!
I know it has been a while but do you know if Marissa Coleman got any birthday cards from fans? `Cuz I sent her one! (Brittany!)
Testudo's Reply:
I'm sure Marissa got all of the cards that were sent to her and I imagine she was very happy to hear from all of her fans, especially you Brittany! Don't forget to keep on supporting our 3rd-ranked Women's Basketball team, because we need our fans just as much as we need our athletes.
I have to say I am the biggest Maryland fan ever !!! I love the Lady Terps. I play b-ball myself. What is Brenda Frese having--a boy or girl??? (Terps Girl)
Testudo's Reply:
Coach Frese is actually expecting to have twins!! Brenda is not sure if they will be boys, girls, or maybe even one of each, but I sure am excited to find out and I bet she is too! You are probably really good at basketball! Perhaps if you work hard enough you can become a Terps basketball player someday! Go Terps!!
Hey what's up! I just watched in amazement as the Terps beat UNC. Do you think this can give an edge to Maryland when Duke comes to town? (Ryan)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Ryan! The Maryland Men's Basketball team's victory against top-ranked UNC just goes to show that we can beat any team in the nation. The Terps are ready for Duke and are prepared to put forth 110% effort. So let's put on our game faces and show Duke we are ready to play!
Hi Testudo! I live in California and I was wondering since Cal and Stanford are a different conference than the Terps,do the Terps play either of them in an away game? P.S. My dad went to Maryland! (Grayson N.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Grayson! We have a lot of teams, but because it is the winter season I am guessing that you are asking about our basketball teams. Both the Men's and Women's teams are only playing ACC schools now, and sadly there are no ACC schools in California. Our Women's Basketball team did travel to California earlier in the season to face UC-Santa Barbara and UCLA (we were victorious in both!) I think it's really cool that you keep up with Maryland sports even though you live all the way in California. I bet the water there is really nice, especially for us turtles. Tell your dad that I said hi and hopefully in the future our Terps will travel out that way! Thanks for the great question Grayson.
When is Kristi Toliver's Birthday? (Sara)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Sara! It sounds like you're a big Kristi Toliver fan! So am I! Her birthday is January 27. Not too far away! Thanks for your awesome question! GO TERPS!
How did you guys like sitting in the rain all day in the Emerald Bowl against OSU? I was there in the rain also. (Grayson N)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Grayson! Thanks so much for joining us at the Emerald Bowl! It was great seeing my troops out to support the Terps (even in the rain)! I always have a good time rooting for the Terps, rain or shine. Plus, being a Terrapin, I love the water! Thanks for being such a loyal fan and make sure to say hello when you see me at the next sporting event you come to! GO TERPS!
I was wondering if UMD has hockey? (Kevin)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Kevin! That's a great question! The University of Maryland does have a hockey team, just not on the varsity level. Ice Hockey is a club sport, which means students who share an interest in the sport form, organize, and manage the club. The club sports still compete with other schools, and membership is open to anyone at the University. So, anyone who likes to play can join! Feel free to browse the Ice Hockey Club website at www.terphockey.umd.edu/index.html for more information about the club! Have a great day and GO TERPS!
Who is number 32 on the Terps mens' basketball team? (Nick)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Nick! I'm glad to see that you're following the Terps mens' basketball this season! Number 32 is Jerome Burney. He's a redshirt freshman forward from Atlanta, Georgia. Unfortunately, he was unable to play last season due to an injury, but he's certainly ready to play this season! Keep cheering him and the rest of the Terps basketball team on! GO TERPS!
Testudo... E.J. Henderson (former linebacker) was #42 for most of his college career, but didn't he also wear #52 for one year? (Chris G)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Chris! E.J. was truly a great linebacker during his time with the Terps! As far as I can tell, E.J. wore #42 for his entire career here. Today, he wears number 56 for the Vikings. I think his brother Erin plans to follow in his footsteps someday! Thanks for your question! GO TERPS!
Hi Testudo! Do you walk around at all types of sports games? Women and Men? (Paige)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Paige! I try to make it to all the different sporting events, both men and women, but there are 27 different teams to root for, which can be quite a time commitment! I go to every basketball and football game and try to make at least a few games for all of the other sports! I love meeting all of the fans and taking my picture with them! When I'm not cheering on the Terps, I like to attend other events on campus and even go swimming. And remember, Terrapins need to sleep too! But the Terps always come first! Make sure you say hello when you see me at the next game you come to! GO TERPS!
Can you tell Marissa Coleman, Crystal Langhorne and Kristi Toliver that I'm their #1 fan?!?! (Sara)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Sara! Of course! I'll tell them the next time I see them! Thanks for being such a great fan! Marissa, Crystal, Kristi and the rest of the team really appreciate it! Keep cheering on the Terps and have a great day!
How many blocks does Bambale Osby have this year? (Jack G.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Jack! Great question! Boom has 31 blocks so far this season, and I'm sure there are more to come! Last year, he had 16 blocks, so he has nearly doubled that number this season! He also has 9 steals and an average of 5.9 rebounds per game! Thanks for the question and keep rooting for Boom and the Terps! GO TERPS!
The Lady Terps are doing awesome this year! Marissa, Kristi, Crystal...AMAZING. Everyone is doing so well. Do you think they will make it all the way in the ACC or NCAA tournament this year? I know I do! (Rachel)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Rachel! Thanks for being such a great fan! The Terps are having a really great season! I'll tell Marissa, Kristi and Crystal you say hello! It's hard to tell how far the team will go in the league or the tournament this year, but I'm really excited that it's time for ACC play! Did you know that Maryland is a host site for the 1st and 2nd rounds of the NCAA tournament this year? That means that if the Terps receive a bid to the tournament we will get to play on our home court! Tickets are already on sale! Grab some friends and come out and support the Terps! Have a good day!
Do you think the Terps football team will get into a bowl game? (Grayson)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Grayson! We are all very excited the Terps football team got their sixth win with an impressive victory last Saturday. That win made the Terps bowl eligible! We are all hoping to be invited to a bowl for the second straight year!
What does it take to be Testudo? (Nick)
Testudo's Reply:

How many points has Kristi Toliver had this season? (Grant Pack)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Grant! With the help of Kristi Toliver's 155 points, the women's basketball team is off to a great start with victories over a few ranked opponents including: #4 LSU, #6 Oklahoma, and #23 Notre Dame. I can't wait for the NCAA tournament to start as it will be here in College Park, MD at the Comcast Center. I hope to see you there! GO TERPS!
How far do you think the Terps will go this year in men's basketball? (Ariel)
Testudo's Reply:
Great question, Ariel! Even though the men's basketball team has suffered a couple tough losses this year, we do have four victories and hope to continue our winning ways this season. While it is hard to tell how far the Terps will go this year, I can say that the young Terps team will do all it can to make a late season push! I can't wait for ACC play. GO TERPS!
One of my 10th grade teachers calls me `smurtle' and always puts down Maryland no matter what sport. What should I do? (J.P. Cyr)
Testudo's Reply:
I'm sorry to hear that, J.P. You should show your teacher how cool it is to be a Terp fan. She should come to an athletic event and see how spirited and fun our Terrapin athletes can be! I'm glad you continue to show your support for the Terps, thanks so much! Keep up the Maryland pride. GO TERPS!
In what facility does the Maryland Women's Volleyball team play? (Donna)
Testudo's Reply:
I'm glad you asked Donna! The Volleyball team plays in the Comcast Center Pavilion, which is the Auxiliary Gym located on the ground floor of the Comcast Center. Just walk to the right of the Stairway of Champions and go in the door, then head down the hall and you're there! They have 4 more home games this season:
11/16 @ 5:00 pm vs. Virginia
11/17 @ 5:00 vs. Virginia Tech
11/21 @ 5:00 vs. Clemson
11/23 @ 2:00 vs. Georgia Tech
I hope I see you there! GO TERPS!
Will Maryland beat Florida State and NC State in Football? (Morgan P)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Morgan! You better believe Maryland is going to win those games! Did you see the way Chris Turner and the guys lit up Boston College last Saturday??? We're on fire right now! I really hope we win, because if we do...WE'RE BOWL BOUND BABY! GO TERPS!
What is the reason for the black stripe on the right side (below the shoulder) of the Women's Basketball uniforms this season. (A-M)
Testudo's Reply:
Great question! The black stripe is to honor those lost in the tragedy that took place at Virginia Tech on April 16, 2007. Many of the ACC schools will be wearing similar stripes on their uniforms this season, because even though we may all be rivals on the basketball court, we're all on the same team in life.
About how many Terps football games have you been to? (Bradley S.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Bradley. Hmm, wow tough question! I became the official mascot of the University in 1932, but I started really strutting my stuff in the late 70's when the school decided to buy me a sweet new shell with an M engraved on it to wear to games! I haven't missed a game since! GO TERPS!
Hw much do you weigh, brother? Are you solid or hollow? Just curious. LOL. (BB)
Testudo's Reply:
Great question BB! When you see me dancing and going crazy at sporting events, I'm usually weighing a trim 200 pounds. I need to stay fit if I'm going to breakdance and slide down railings don't I? However, the bronze statue of me in front of McKeldin Library isn't quite as mobile. The statue is filled with cement and weighs over 1000 pounds! I don't think you'll see him busting a move any time soon! GO TERPS!
What do you think that the Women's Basketball team feels about being rated ahead of Duke and North Carolina? (Isabella C)
Testudo's Reply:
Well, Isabella, if the team feels the same way I do, I bet they feel INCREDIBLE about it! However, the team realizes that the season has just begun and there are a lot of games left to play. That being said, I think we are hands down the best team in the country. We have 4 starters back from the National Championship team in 2006 and we are STRONGER than ever! GO TERPS!
Did Maryland Terps football play Alabama in 1974 or 1975 at Maryland? (Holly)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Holly! You sure know your Maryland Football history! The Terrapins hosted the Crimson Tide in 1974. Alabama defeated Maryland 21-16 in front of 54,412 at Byrd Stadium. The Terps rebounded from the loss and went on to win the ACC Championship! Thanks for the great question and keep supporting Maryland Football! Go Terps!
Testudo? How many freshmen are on the basketball team this year? GO TERPS!!! (Die Hard Fan)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Die Hard Fan! Great name! Both Maryland Basketball teams have a lot of freshmen this season. The Women's team has five true freshmen and one red-shirt freshman. The men's team has six true freshmen and one red-shirt freshman. How these freshmen do will greatly impact both teams' success this season. We need you Die Hard Fan, and every other die hard fan, to come to Comcast Center this year and cheer on these young squads throughout the season! Go Terps!
What is Marissa Coleman's birthdate? (Mykal F.)
Testudo's Reply:

Hey Testudo, I was wondering if you ever go to any of the swimming events? Does it cost to get in to see a meet? P.S. I have a tattoo of you in a really cool spot! (Cathy)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Cathy! Its great to see that you're interested in Maryland swimming! I try to go to as many Maryland Athletic events as possible, swimming events included. The great thing about swimming events is that they are free to the public! Now that's a great deal! P.S. I'm flattered that you have a tattoo of me!. P.P.S. GO TERPS!!!
Are you friends with the cheerleaders? (Kimmy)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Kimmy! I'm very good friends with the cheerleaders! Anyone who cheers as loud as I do for the Terps is ok in my book. The cheerleaders do an outstanding job of getting the crowd into the game. They always teach me new tricks I can use to pump people up! Not only am I friends with the cheerleaders, but I am friends with anyone who cheers for the Terps! Next time you see me at a game, come up and say hi, I always like to meet fellow Maryland fans! Go Terps!
Is the Maryland/ BC game a blackout game? When do we have these games? What colors should Terps wear for each game? (Muthu)
Testudo's Reply:
What's up Muthu! The Maryland/ BC Football game this coming Saturday will not be a blackout game. We tend to host one blackout game each season, and we had one against West Virginia earlier this season. If it is not a blackout game, Terp fans are encouraged to red. The game this Saturday is the last football home game of the season, so come out wearing red and be as loud you can as we take on Boston College! GO TERPS!
Hey Testudo, how many freshman does Maryland football have on the team this year? (Jack G.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Jack, Great question! We had a great freshman class this year and we brought in 55 football players. This means Maryland football should be strong for many more years once these young players grow into their roles. I'll see you at the Boston College game on November 10! Go Terps!
Hey Testudo, how many NCAA Championships has Maryland ever won and what were they? (Tim Byrne)
Testudo's Reply:

Hey Testudo, whats the capacity of the Comcast Center? How many tickets go to students and how do they get them? (Aubrey)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Aubrey, glad to see you're interested in Maryland Basketball! The Comcast Center is a great facility for our basketball teams, and a very tough place to play if you are an opponent. It holds 17,950 people, and that includes the approximate 4000 students that surround the court and also fill "The Wall" behind the visitor's basket in the second half! In order to get tickets, students must request them approximately 2 weeks in advance. This costs nothing (besides the activity fee built into your tuition) and the tickets are awarded through a lottery where Loyalty matters. Visit www.tickets.umd.edu for more info! Hope to see you at the Concordia game! Go Terps!
Hey Testudo, everyone makes fun of me at school for being a "Turtle Fan". What should I do? (Shade)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Shade, I am really sorry to hear about that. If I were you I would just ignore it and not give those people the attention they want. They probably are just jealous because they know that you are a fan of the best school in the country. So do not worry about them. Stand tall and proud and say GO TERPS!
Hey Testudo, is there any way to get in touch with a Maryland Field Hockey player? I am a huge Maryland Field Hockey fan and would love to talk to one of them! Go Terps! (Rachel)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Rachel! That's awesome that you love Maryland Field Hockey! They are once again having a great season, and are looking for their third straight National Championship! Did you know that thet University of Maryland is hosting the NCAA Field Hockey Championships? Your best bet for communicating with a layer is by mailing a letter to the Field Hockey program. You can get the athletic department's mailing address off of the website (umterps.com in the Athletic Department drop down menu! See you at the NCAA Championships! Go Terps!
Hey Testudo, I am a big fan of yours. UMD all the way! I was wondering, how many seats does Byrd Stadium hold and how many will it hold after the big construction on it is over? (Peter C.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Peter! That is a great question. From what I know about Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium, the Terps can currently host 51,500 fans. After the construction, I do not believe Maryland will have a significant increase in number of seats, as many of the bleacher seats will be converted to mezzanine level seats. However, the overall presence of the expanded press box will really fill in the end of the stadium...I think it will look awesome and am so excited to see the finished product!
How good is Maryland going to look this year after midnight madness in basketball? (Colin S.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Colin! Are you as excited about the men's basketball season as I am? The Terps look as strong as ever this year! Returning valuable guys from last year's team such as James Gist, Bambale "BOOM" Osby, Greivis Vazquez, Eric Hayes, and five newcomers such as Braxton Dupree...this team will be GREAT! They will once again compete for the ACC Championship, as well as a trip to the NCAA tournament!! See you November 7 when the Terps take on Concordia! GO TERPS!
What's the name of the instrumental song played during Terps football games where fans kind of jump in place to the music? (swp)
Testudo's Reply:
What a great question! Although the Terps play many instrumental songs during football games, I think the one you are thinking of is called Zombie Nation. It is by a band Kernkraft 400. The Terps love it and it really gets the fans hyped! GO TERPS!
I want to get on my basketball team for my school. Do you have any tips? (B.D.H)
Testudo's Reply:
Dedication and hard work. If I were to give you any advice, it would be to try your best! Practice hard and show the coach you care. Most importantly, though, HAVE FUN! Good luck with tryouts and I hope to see you out here on November 7 when the Terps take on Concordia! GO TERPS!
Are you friends with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? (Colin S.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Colin! Unfortunately, I have never met those guys, but they are pretty cool! I wish I could meet them. In the meantime though, I do enjoy listening to their theme song at football and basketball games, compliments of the Might Sound of Maryland! It always seems to get the fans hyped! Maybe I will see you out there, on Saturday when the Terps take on Clemson at 3:30 p.m., singing along! TURTLE POWER!
I'm coming to the football game with four carnivorous family members who want to buy dinner at the stadium. Here's the problem: I'm a vegetarian. (Although I do eat seafood, kind of like diamondback terrapins.) Will there be anything for me at concessions? (Nachos don't count.) Thanks! (Herbivorous fan)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Herbivorous Fan! It is great to see you and your family are coming out to support the Terps! We can really use the support! As for food, I know I always find something tasty and excellent for dinner! I do not know exactly what you enjoy eating, but you can find out more information about Maryland concessions and look at a football menu at http://terptations.umd.edu/concessions. Hope this helps and I will see you at the game! GO TERPS!
Testudo!! We're coming to our first ever Maryland game next weekend to cheer the Terps on to victory against Clemson. As out of towners, what kind of gameday traditions are there that we should know about? (J.M.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey J.M.! So glad you guys decided to come support the Terps! We can really use your support! One tradition I think you guys will love is the Rally in Terp Alley. About 2.5 hours before kickoff, the team will walk down Terp Alley on their way to the field. This gives you an opportunity to be right there, and show your support one more time before the team takes the field! I know I'll be there, along with the Cheerleaders, and the Mighty Sound of Maryland! See you there on the 27th! GO TERPS!
Do you have a school running club? I am looking to run some distance but I am not on the Varsity team. I heard you have a club call the Terp Runners. How do I contact them? (M Keen)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey M Keen! As you may know, Terrapins are not known for their speed, BUT I do have a few friends that told me about the Terp Runners. They meet Monday to Friday, right at the Main Entrance to the Kehoe Track complex, in Lot 1, at 5:00 p.m. They split up into different groups and go on runs consisting of various distances. They also participate in different local road races. Everyone is welcome, and experience does not matter. You probably will not see me out there running with you, but maybe I'll see you at one of the races! GO TERPS!!
How do you think the Men's Basketball team will do this year with almost all of the starters gone? (Terp Fanatic)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Terp Fanatic! Let's not write this season off before we even get started! I mean, did you see those guys DANCE! The Terps look as strong as ever this year! Returning valuable guys from last year's team such as James Gist, Bambale "BOOM" Osby, Greivis Vazquez, Eric Hayes, and five newcomers such as Braxton Dupree...this team will be GREAT! They will once again compete for the ACC Championship, as well as a trip to the NCAA tournament (the Final Four is in TEXAS)!!!. I know that losing D.J., Mike, and Ekene is tough, but give these guys a chance and I promise you that you will not be disappointed! See you November 7 when the Terps take on Concordia! GO TERPS!
Hey Testudo, how bad is Maryland going to beat Virginia in football this week? (Patrick)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Patrick! It's hard for me to hold in my excitement for this game! We are well rested and so prepared for the Cavaliers, they will not even know what hit them (although it will probably be Erin Henderson)! Virginia is a good team, but they are no Maryland Terrapins! They don't have Thunder and Lightning (Ball and Lattimore)! They do not have THE X-FACTOR (Heyward-Bey)! And they definitely don't have Chris Turner! The Terps are gonna run all over the Cavaliers! I hope to see you there! GO TERPS!
Who is the best mascot other than you of course? (Noah)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Noah! I am honored that you called me the best mascot! Other great mascots include Slapshot of the Washington Capitals, Louie of the Bowie Baysox, and Butch T. Cougar from Washington State, who beat me for the Capital One Bowl Mascot Challenge last year. I also have to admit I think I have a little Mascot crush on the Philly Phanatic! I mean who wouldn't though! GO TERPS!
Do you think Maryland will beat Clemson this year? (Logan)
Testudo's Reply:
Logan, OF COURSE Maryland will beat Clemson this year! We have to look at the Virginia game first, but AFTER we beat Virginia there will be no stopping the Terps! This team has what it takes and everything is really starting to click! So stay exceited and keep supporting those Terps! GO TERPS
P.S.: I remember you from the Georgia Tech game. I can not remember the exact jersey but I want you to be as loud this week as you were when we played Georgia Tech!! See you at the game! GO TERPS!
In what year did Maryland adopt you? p.s. I have a tattoo of you and love it, just need to know the history. Thanks. (Pete J)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Pete! Wow, a tattoo, that's awesome! I actually got my start back in 1932, when then football coach Dr. H. Curley Byrd recommended that the Diamondback terrapin be made the school mascot. Diamondback terrapins are also the Maryland State Reptile. The suggestion was in response to The Diamondback's (the school paper, even back then) search for a new "official" mascot. Before this search, Maryland teams were called the Old Liners. Hope this helps! GO TERPS!
How did you get your name? (Max M.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Max! That is a very interesting question. While the origin of my existence is well know, why I am named Testudo is more mysterious. One leading contender for the name's origin is that it was derived from the scientific classification for turtle, testudines. Another theory is that the name is from testudo gigantia, a species native to the African country Seychelles and the remote island Aldabra. Finally, the derivation of the word testudo itself comes from the Latin word for a protective shelter used for Roman soldiers heads, similar to a tortoise shell. Hope this helps! GO TERPS!
Will the football team do well this year? (Damon D)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Damon! Although, I am not a fortune teller, I have a strong feeling our Terps are going to do extremely well this year. Currently the Terps are 3-2 and continue to dominate even nationally ranked teams, such as Rutgers! See you at the Georgia Tech game this Saturday! GO TERPS!
When is Maryland Madness? (Tricia)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Tricia! This is an excellent question. This year Maryland Madness is Friday, October 12. The madness with begin at 8 p.m. and gate will open at 6:30 p.m. We hope to see you there as we welcome our nationally ranked men's and women's basketball teams for the 2007-2008 seasons. GO TERPS!
When is the next blackout game? I heard it was the game against WVU, is that true? (Jorge R)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Jorge! That's a great question. Yes, the next blackout game is this Thursday, September 13th when the Terps Football team will be taking on the West Virginia Mountaineers in Byrd Stadium. Make sure you tell all of your friends who are going to the game to wear black so we can create an awesome atmosphere! I'm so excited and I hope to see you there, Go Terps!
What is the all time won-lost record of the Terps football team? Is there a website for this type of information? (Grant C)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Grant! That's a very interesting question. The Maryland Football team has an all-time record of 586-511-43 since their first season in 1892! They have two Wire National Titles and 11 Conference titles! You can find this and other fantastic information simply by searching Maryland Terrapins Football on wikipedia.com. Thanks again for your awesome question, and always remember GO TERPS!
Even though you came in second for best mascot last year, you are still the number 1 mascot ever cheering for the number 1 team. What is it like to be the best mascot in all the land? :) (Jeff B)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Jeff! Thank you so much for that wonderful compliment I am extremely flattered! I look forward to every single day of cheering on the Terps along with awesome fans just like you! I feel very fortunate to be the mascot for such an impressive program. I eat, drink, and sleep Maryland Terrapin Athletics and I wouldn't trade this mascot duty for anything in the world! Next time you see me at a sporting event make sure you come and say hello so that I can thank you in person! Have a great day and remember, GO TERPS!
Do you think Maryland sports teams will do good this season? (Damon)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Damon! I'm glad to see that you are interested in Maryland Athletics! This Maryland Terrapin sport season is hopefully going to be one of the most exciting ones in recent history! We have a fantastic group of incoming recruits that will only help improve our program. My personal goal this year is to help cheer the Terps on to at least two more National Championships to match last year's awesome season. I need all the help I can get from great fans like you so come out and be loud while we work together to make this athletic season the best ever!
Hey dude, do you think you could mail me a real size Maryland football helmet? (Connor M)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Connor! Sorry dude, it wouldn't be fair to all the other fans out there who I am sure would love to have a real size Terps Football helmet. However, I think they sell them at the Terrapin Team Shop online or perhaps you can find one at a major sporting goods store. I definitely recommend getting one they make a great collector's item! Also, if you get one make sure you wear it while you cheer on your favorite team. GO TERPS!
Do you think that Maryland can do better than 9-4 this year? (Andrew)
Testudo's Reply: OF COURSE!!!! The team did really well last year with that outstanding 9-4 record and I only think the best of our GREAT football team. I know I am going to have my fingers crossed and I hope you will too!
My favorite players are Greivis Vasquez, and Darrius Heyward-Bey, are they good choices? (Andrew)
Testudo's Reply: Both Greivis and Darrius are great choices. They are both young players with a lot of room to grow. Greivis was an ACC Honorable Mention this past year and Darrius was a First Team Freshman All-American. Both players are set to have great seasons, so I think you made some pretty great picks!
Do you think the Terps will go to a bowl game this year in football? (Matthew)
Testudo's Reply: Well, Matthew I think they will, but that is all up to the team. They have to play really well and have a winning season in order to be eligible for a bowl game. Will I see you at a game supporting the Terps?
Who's the leading scorer in Maryland Basketball history? (Rick)
Testudo's Reply:
That's a great question Rick. The answer is Juan Dixon. He was a Terp from 1999 to 2002. He leads the Terps scoring with 2,269 points in his career at Maryland. Wow, can you image scoring that many points?
When does Terps field hockey start? (Megan)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Megan, I am glad to see that you're a Terps Field Hockey fan because I am too! The Maryland Field Hockey team starts their season August 26 against Central Michigan at a tournament at Northwestern. However, their first home game is Sunday, September 2 at 12:00 p.m. at Ludwig Field. I hope I will see you there!
Hey Testudo! I'm really good at both basketball and football. I hope to get a scholarship for one of them. But how hard is it to get in and what sport do you think I should strive for? (Nick)
Testudo's Reply:
Well Nick, I am excited that you are a talented kid and want to be a Terp when you are older. My advice for you is to get good grades in school because that is most important. Second, just remember to have fun and try you best at the sport that you play and everything else with fall into place. I am sure I will have a blast cheering you on in either football OR basketball. Good luck and remember: GO TERPS!
What bowl game will we go to this year? (Adam)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Adam, this is a great question. The Terps have to play well to decide which bowl we are going to! If we win the ACC championship we will get to go to the Orange Bowl in beautiful, sunny Miami for winter break! Maybe I can go to the beach and visit some of my relatives for Christmas. :) I can't wait to see you and all the other Terp fans filling up the stadium and cheering loudly for our team this fall!
Testudo, how many National titles does the Women's Field Hockey team have so far? (Lauren)
Testudo's Reply:
5!!! And we have won the past two years in a row!! This is no easy feat; we had to beat rival Duke and Wake Forest to win these two titles. Field Hockey is a great sport at Maryland and one I always look forward to in the fall. Those girls are a great team and really make the game exciting to watch. I can't wait for this new season to start and I'll be looking for you in the stands cheering our team on to another National Title!
Hey Testudo!! I really want to go to the University of Maryland on a full basketball scholarship...what does it take to get in and be a Terp??? (Alexis)
Testudo's Reply:
Hard work and dedication on the court and classroom! Here at Maryland, it's an honor to be a Terp no matter what you do! Keep working hard and focusing on basketball, but more importantly your schoolwork, and there is no way the coaches here will be able to turn you down! Maybe in a few years you will see me on the sideline cheering for you as you play for the Terps!
Do you sponsor any race cars? (Jared S.)
Testudo's Reply:
Sometimes, people think that since we are turtles, Terps are slow and timid. I made sure that we showed everyone this wasn't the case by having a Terp race car! Our race car is even driven by a Terp, Donnie Neuenberger. He races in the #77 car for the Busch Series, which is a car series for NASCAR. Make sure to tune into the NASCAR Busch series races on Saturdays and cheer for your favorite Terp to take home the checkered flag and make it to victory lane! I know I will!
Hey Testudo, how is your summer so far? Now that school has
ended, what do you do? I cant wait to see you next year, hopefully, at the
Games. Bye! (UMDLuver<3)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey UMDLuver<3! I'm having a great summer, thanks for asking! As you might know, turtles LOVE the water, so I've been playing at the beach and visiting some of my Terrapin family on the Chesapeake Bay. :) Although I enjoy the summer just as much as the next guy, I really can't wait until all my Terp athletes start competing again so I can do what I do best...cheer them on at their games! Glad to hear you're looking forward to the same thing!
Testudo, where can I download a wave file of the
common rally song at Terp Basketball games. (Skippy T.)
Testudo's Reply:
That's a great question, Skippy. I really love all the songs to get pumped up at the basketball games, too! Unfortunately, since so many fun ones are played over the course of a game, I'm not exactly sure which one you're asking about. If our pep band played it, maybe you could direct this question their way instead? Sorry I'm not much help, but can't wait to see you at the games this winter...and hopefully we can sing along to all the exciting tunes together!
Hey Testudo, what are the fall sports for the University of
Maryland? (Maryland Fan)
Testudo's Reply:
Glad to hear you're already starting to get excited for the upcoming Terps season here at UMD, Maryland Fan! There will be a lot of games for you to come and watch since our fall sports are made up of football, men's and women's soccer, field hockey, volleyball, and cross country. With 27 awesome sports here, there's always a lot going on no matter what the season! Make sure you check the schedules right on this website so you can try to make at least a few games of each sport. You definitely won't regret it. Hope to see you there!
How come you never answer my questions????
Testudo's Reply:
Oh no, I'm sorry if I haven't gotten to answering your questions. This is one of my favorite jobs as Maryland's mascot, and I really appreciate all the questions I get asked. I just have a very busy schedule, so I only have time to answer a few each week out of the sometimes hundreds that I get. :( Keep submitting any questions you have, and I'll do my best to get to as many as I can. It's loyal fans like you that make me proud to be a Terp!
WHEN I GET OLDER, DO YOU THINK I WILL BECOME A FAMOUS SOCCER
PLAYER? I REALLY LOVE THE TERPS, AND I WANT TO GO TO COLLEGE...IM ONLY 10 (Ashton)
Testudo's Reply:
Well Ashton, I can't predict the future, but it sure sounds like you really love the sport of soccer! Ask any of our awesome players, and they'll tell you that's the first step to becoming as good as they are. Keep practicing hard, and hopefully your goal of becoming a famous soccer player at the University of Maryland will come true! We'd love for you to help us keeping winning lots and lots of games in another ten years! Have a great summer going to camps and playing with your friends. :)
Who's better, Steve Blake or John Gilcrest? (Bradley S.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Bradley, thanks for a great question! I think it's a toss-up for which great Maryland guard is the better basketball player. John Gilchrest had a very special season in 2004 as he was named the ACC Tournament MVP. This was the first time the Terps took home this title since 1984! Steve Blake also made a lasting mark on our prestigious Maryland basketball program by helping lead the Terps to its very first NCAA Championship win in 2002. He also finished his four-year career as our all-time leader in assists with 972! Both are pretty darn good, huh? Can't wait to see more great Maryland basketball this season!
I am very excited to be attending 4 Maryland basketball camps. I have
already gone to one camp and i got to see my life long idol ...dun dun
dun.... MARISSA COLEMAN!!
She is an amazing 3 point shooter. Anyway, I was wondering if the players
will be going to any more of the camps at the Comcast Center over the
summer.
GO TERPS!!! <3
(Ashley T. aka #1 terps fan)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Ashley! Sounds like you sure are the "#1 terps fan" going to a whopping FOUR basketball camps. :) That's awesome! There will always be at least a few of our great womens' basketball players at all the camps when they're not getting better by playing on special teams such as the USA Women's Worlds Squad like Laura Harper and Crystal Langhorne. They sure do enjoy sharing their love of the game with you girls! Have fun, and good luck this summer!
What is the Terp men's basketball record supposed to be in 2007-2008? (Brady S.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Brady! I am very excited to see next season's schedule for men's basketball! It has not been released yet and may not be for awhile but I'm sure Coach Williams and his staff are busy arranging it the best they can! We did lose a few key seniors but also have a strong core of underclassman returning to the program. Each year, each team always has their own chemistry with the loss of graduated players and the addition of new ones. I'm looking forward to discovering the 2007-2008 chemistry, are you? I'm always hoping for a national championship!
Hey Testudo, do you know Katie Princiotto? (Isabella)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Isabella! You bet your turtle shell I know Katie Princiotto! She was a junior on the Maryland women's lacrosse team this season. Playing at attack, she led the team in assists with 26. I sure am looking forward to seeing her play her senior year next season!
How many national championships have the Terps won in all sports? (Sean)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Sean! Thanks for your question. National Championships are always a bit tricky because there are technically NCAA Championships and then also OTHER National Championships (before that sport had an "NCAA Championship", which is still the case). In terms of NCAA team titles, Maryland has 20. Maryland also has 20 OTHER National Championships. Therefore, combining these two figures would give us a grand total of 40 total National Championships for the Terps!
Yes, Testudo, I would love to bear the shell as soon as you have graduated and begin supporting Terrapin athletics in the stands. How many of the 27 sports do you attend? (Cameron)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Cameron! That is awesome that you would like to be Testudo someday! I try to attend as many of the 27 sports that I can, but unfortunately I just can't make it to them all. I'm seen the most at Football, Men's Basketball, and Women's Basketball games although I usually try my best to make an appearance at all the other AWESOME Maryland sports when I get a chance. Thanks for writing in!
As a brother of a Maryland graduate, I would like to proceed in going to Maryland myself. Must you be a Maryland student to be Testudo or can I do it as a high school student? (Alex W.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Alex! Yes, you must be a Maryland student to take on the big responsibility and honor of serving as Testudo. It sounds like you are well on your way to becoming a Terrapin so I will have to keep my eye out for you in a few years! GO TERPS!

Hi Testudo! Besides cheering at all the Maryland games and greeting fans that come up to you, what do you like to do in your spare time when there are no games? Do you wear your costume out? Where do you like to go? Thank you. (Lauren)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Lauren! Are you enjoying your summer so far? I am definitely looking forward to it now that all of my beloved Terp teams have finished up their Spring seasons. I plan on spending my summer munching on some good food, probably crawling around at the beach on the shore a bit (I might even get my shell wet in the water a few times) and exercising to keep my energy level up. I'm already looking forward to the Fall sports seasons which will start in a few months! Time flies during these summer months so make sure you make the best of yours!
What batting records did your third baseman, Chris Stark, set awhile ago in your record books? (Nick S.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Nick! You must be a Terrapin baseball fan! GO TERPS! I crawled into the record books to check out your question and found that Chris Stark sits in the top 10 for 3 different records here at the University of Maryland. For career records, he is 9th for hits with 190 and 8th for runs with 139. However, in single-season batting records, Stark holds the top spot in the Terp record book with 70 runs in a season. This number narrowly defeats Derek Hacopian, who currently sits in the number 2 spot with 69. Thanks for all your support Nick!
Hey Testudo! What does it take to be Testudo, because it takes a whole lot of stuff to be Chief Osceola at Florida State! (Cameron)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Cameron! Sounds like you have been doing your research! It takes a lot to be Testudo, but the two main things are Dedication and Heart. Testudo has to be able to support his Terps, even when the going gets tough. There are also A LOT of games! My schedule is packed with Maryland Athletic events as well as other public appearances. So, sometimes I'm pretty tired, but I have to stay focused and give my all to the Terps! They need my support all of the time! Do you think you would want to be Testudo someday?
Do you get hot in that shell of yours? Honestly, do you? Go Terps! (Scott C.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Scott! This is definitely a question I get a lot! During those first few games in the fall when the weather is still very warm it definitely gets a bit steamy in my shell. However, when the air turns a bit crisper and fans are huddled up I am extremely appreciative of my warm shell! Thanks for writing in! Go Terps!
Hey, you are my favorite mascot ever and I got a turtle and named it after you! I just wanted to thank you for being such a lively and enthusiastic mascot! C-ya at a game sometime, hopefully! (I <3 Testudooo!!!)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi There! You almost made me blush! I'm glad that we are friends! I try my best and am completely honored you named YOUR OWN turtle after me! Take good care of it and make sure it gets plenty of love! GO TERPS!
Can you see where you are going while wearing that Terps head thing? (TERPS LOVER #1)
Testudo's Reply:
Good question! While my visibility probably isn't 20/20 with my furry Terps head, I can still see pretty well. Enough to race around cheering for my Terps and watching all the exciting action! Can most turtles see 20/20 anyway? I'd be interested in knowing...GO TERPS!
How many national championship have the Terps won in 06-07? (Karl)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Karl! My Terps have won TWO national championships so far in 06-07. Both the Competitive Cheer and Field Hockey teams won their second straight national titles! GO TERPS!
I am an art teacher; on of my students did a drawing of D.J. Strawberry and would like to send it to him. How can he do this? (Gene S.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Gene. Wow! I bet D.J. will sure think that is awesome that your student took the time to make a drawing of him! In my opinion, your best bet would be to send the portrait to the men's basketball office with a note attached. You can find the athletic department's mailing address below, as I've answered a similar question before OR you can find it on umterps.com. GO TERPS!
Hey Testudo, it's me again. Since I don't live in Maryland, I'm hoping you have the answer for me. How does the 2007 Maryland football team look? GO TERPS! (Cam the Terps Fan)
Testudo's Reply: Hey Cam the Terps Fan! The 2007 Maryland Football team is looking very good. They just finished Spring Practice with the Spring Game this past Saturday. The White team defeated the Red squad by the score of 27-10. RB Morgan Green piled up 92 rushing yards to lead the White team! I hope all is going well and I will see you at Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium next season!
Could I meet Kristi Toliver? (Sara)
Testudo's Reply: Hi Sara! The players are extremely busy with school, as well as basketball and it is very difficult for even me to catch up with Kristi! The Women's Basketball team held an autograph session at the Comcast Center on Maryland Day if you were lucky enough to catch up with them then. Also, the players usually greet fans after each home game. So, be sure to come to a game next season and hopefully you can meet her then! Take care and Go Terps!
How do you pick the kids that do the half time promotions on the court at the Women's Basketball games? (Sara)
Testudo's Reply:
Hello Sara! Maryland Sports Marketing is responsible for randomly selecting the contestants for the half time promotions. Keep showing your support by attending the games and hopefully you will be the lucky one selected. Thank you for your continued support for the Terps!
Is it possible to have you make an appearance at a wedding taking place at Memorial Chapel? The Bride and Groom are both Maryland graduates avid Terp fans. (Terp Mom)
Testudo's Reply: Hello Terp Mom! It is great to hear that two Maryland graduates are tying the knot. Thank you very much for your interest. If you are interested in me making an appearance at the wedding, please forward your request to mdsportsmarketing@umd.edu.
Are you nervous about the Maryland / Johns Hopkins lacrosse game? (Matt)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Matt! I'm not sure if you meant the men's or women's Maryland / Johns Hopkins lacrosse game. The Maryland women's lacrosse team (currently ranked No. 4) just defeated No. 13 Johns Hopkins by the score of 22-15. It was a great game in which four Terrapins established new career highs! The Maryland men's lacrosse team meets Johns Hopkins on Saturday, April 14th at 8:00 p.m.. I'm definitely excited and anticipating a GREAT game! Maryland is currently ranked No. 9 in the polls with a 4-1 record and Johns Hopkins (5-2) sits at No. 3. Are you planning on going to the game Matt?
What was the main reason the Terps lost to Butler? (Andrew)
Testudo's Reply: I know all Terp fans, including me, were heartbroken after that close loss to Butler in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Being a 4 seed vs. 5 seed match-up I knew it was potentially going to be close, but in those situations you really have to be hitting on all cylinders. I think what hurt my Terrapins the most was our 6:29 minute scoring drought in the first half and our free throw shooting. Butler finished the game shooting 66.7% from the line compared to our 46.7%. You and I both know how hard the Terps had to work at the end of the season to propel themselves into the tournament and for that I am extremely proud of them! Hopefully the underclassman can take this experience into next season and grow from it to help make the team even stronger! Go Terps!
Who was the men's basketball player who had a double engineering major? I believe he was from Africa. (Tom)
Testudo's Reply: Hi Tom. While I'm unsure about the double engineering major, you may be referring to Hassan Fofana, a former Terp player who was born in Guinea on the West Coast of Africa. Hassan joined the Terrapin program for the 03-04 season but now plays at Loyola College where he is majoring in global studies.
Hi I'm typing this report about going to Terps basketball games and I was wondering how tall D.J. Strawberry is? (Lindsey B.)

Hey Testudo! I am a big fan of yours! I love your enthusiasm at the games. I hope I will get to get a picture with you one of these days. Keep up the good work and Gooooo Terps! Cya around! XO. (Testudo's #1 Fan)
Testudo's Reply:

My brother says you're #1 in defense in lacrosse is that right? (Chris' Brother)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Chris' Brother! Although the Terrapin Lacrosse team is having a fantastic season both offensively and defensively, they are currently ranked #13 according to NCAA Men's Lacrosse statistics. On average, they allow 7.77 goals per game. The team that is ranked #1 defensively is Princeton who allows only 5.91 goals per game. Great question, hope to see you out at some of the lacrosse games! Go Terps!
Hello Testudo! If you were to write a letter to someone on the Women's Basketball team, would they be able to write back to you?
P.S. GO MARYLAND TERRAPINS! (TerpsRule!)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi TerpsRule! Awesome name and I love your spirit! The players receive mail all the time, and really enjoy reading letters from their fans. Unfortunately, the players are very busy with school work and basketball to write back most of the time, but they definitely appreciate your support!
Do you think Shay is happy that she got drafted to the New York Liberty? When she retires from the WNBA do you think she will go back to Israel? (Shay Doron's #1 fan)
Testudo's Reply: I'm sure Shay loves your name, Shay Doron's #1 fan! Shay is probably very happy to have been drafted by the Liberty who play not too far from her high school, Christ the King in New York. I'll bet it will be a tough decision for her on whether to return home or not after she retires. I know she has a lot of friends and family back in Israel, but she has had a great time making new friends here in the United States. Great question!
Who holds the all-time record for points per game? Who was the best player to play for Maryland? Who started Maryland basketball's organization a long time ago? (John)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi John, thanks for writing! We have both men's and women's teams who have both had great players over time. The all-time leader for points per game is Walt Williams with 26.8 points per game in the 1991-1992. For women, the record holder is Vicky Bullett with 21.4 points per game in the 1988-1989 season. Although I am not sure about their founders, the men's and women's teams were founded in 1904 and 1971.
Hola Testudo! I wrote a letter to Kristi Toliver and I was wondering if you knew if she could write back. Thank you. xoxo (Terps #1 Fan)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey, awesome name and thanks for being so dedicated to the Terps! The players receive letters from fans all the time and really appreciate your support. They read them all, but unfortunately they have busy schedules filled with classes and basketball and are usually unable to write back! I'm sure Kristi thanks you! Thanks for the love and go Terps!
Hey Testudo, What do you think about the Terps lacrosse team? Do you think they are going all the way? I do! Go Terps! (Chris)
Testudo's Reply:
Thanks for the question, Chris! I love your spirit, you remind me of all Terp fans! I'm not sure if you are talking about the men's or women's team, but either way I agree with you! The men's team is ranked #8 in the nation after a heartbreaking loss last weekend, while the women's team is ranked #2. Both teams should be in for exciting finishes. I think the Terps will have a great shot to win it all in both men's and women's!
If I could choose between Maryland, Duke, or Northwestern what would be my best bet? (Damon)
You have listed some tough competition Damon, but I would say go with Maryland! The University of Maryland is AWESOME for so many reasons, but I will share a few with you. For one, we have an exciting athletics program coupled with the BEST fans in the country! We also have a beautiful campus that is located just a short distance from two great cities, Washington D.C and Baltimore! Maryland also has many great academic programs which give our students a top notch education. Many of our graduates can be seen at the top of their fields all across the world! Lastly, the people in College Park are very nice, always wear red and support the Terps! What more could you ask for?
Do you know if Shay Doron made any women's pro basketball team? P.S. Go Terps! (Isabella)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Isabella, thanks for your question! Shay Doron was drafted by a WNBA team, the New York Liberty! She is the second Terp to be selected by the Liberty, following in the footsteps of 2002 pick Deedee Warley. Shay was the third pick in the second round of the draft. Everyone at Maryland is so proud of her!
What do you like best about being at Maryland besides the basketball team and things of that nature? (Lakeisha)
Testudo's Reply:
Great question, Lakeisha! To be honest, I love everything about being at Maryland! I would have to say that my favorite part is the incredible school spirit. We have the best fans in the country! Whenever I walk around campus, I see tons of people proudly wearing their Maryland gear. This is when I feel proudest to be a Terp!
What's up Testudo, I just want to say that you're awesome and I might see you at the football stadium. (Troy M.)

Testudo's Reply: Hello, thanks so much for all of your support! It's always great to hear that we have fans all around the country. I hope that you get a chance to come to a lot of games even though you live in the South! Come up and introduce yourself to me at the next game you are able to attend. Go Terps!!!
Do the players (for any sport) get to choose their numbers? PS GO TERPS!!!!! (P.B.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi P.B.! Great Question! While I'm not exactly sure, I believe the coaches will do everything they can to please their players as long as the numbers they want are available. However, in some cases the players are assigned numbers to be fair to the entire team. GO TERPS!
I was wondering if the teams ever try to rub you for good luck before a game? I love Maryland and hope to be a future Terp in 8 more years. (Alex)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Alex! There are a few statues of me spread around campus for students, athletes, and whoever else would like to rub the nose for good luck! At the football games the players run out of their team house and rub the nose of the statue located right on the side of the field. If you are ever on the University of Maryland campus make sure you find a statue and rub the nose to bring you good luck! Go Terps!
Hi Testudo, I read that you were 75 years old. Did you have a birthday party? Who did you invite to your party? (Sam)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Sam! Unfortunately, I was too busy to have a birthday party this year with all the preparation and training for the basketball tournaments. Hopefully next year I will be able to set aside some time to celebrate. If I do I'll let you know! Go Terps!

I'm wondering how I'd find an e-mail address of a student-athlete??? Her name is Casey Magor - Lacrosse. I'd love to e-mail Casey. Thanks, Rikki - mom of Sonia Judd - past Lacrosse Terp!! (Rikki)

Dear Mr. Testudo~ I was wondering how you become one of the kids who gets to be on the court
with the basketball players and wipe the floors and stuff. Okay that's it! Love lots! (Cookiemonster)
Testudo's Reply: Hi Cookiemonster! I love your name! The best way to become one of those kids is to contact the basketball offices. Go Terps!
Hi Testudo I was wondering how they got Terps out of Terrapins? Go Terps!!! (John M)
Testudo's Reply: Hi John, Terps is a nickname that was created by fans and has stuck with the Terrapins ever since. I hope you like the nickname as much as I do! Go Terps!
For the Junior Terps Club organization it says that whoever is a Junior Terp will get an invitation to a "special event." I was wondering if you knew what the special event was or when it is going to be. Thank you <3 (Lauren G.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi again Lauren!
We try and plan a Jr. Terps Club event during each season. During the fall Jr. Terps Members we invited to a soccer game and were given a special gift just for attending. During the winter we had a Jr. Terps Event on January 6th at a Women's Basketball game where Jr. Terps Members got to go on a scavenger hunt around the Comcast Center with student athletes and had a poster contest! Testudo also surprised the Jr. Terps members with a visit from the 2006 National Champion Women's Basketball team!
- March 31st the Jr. Terps Club members are invited to Bowie Baysox FREE Family FunFest to meet the Baysox mascot Louie!
- April 14th the Maryland Baseball team has invited the Jr. Terps members to a baseball game starting at 1pm.
- On May 5th the Men's Lacrosse team has invited the Jr. Terps members to a Men's Lacrosse game that starts at 1pm at Chevy Chase Bank Field. There will be special events just for Jr. Terps Members that come to the game!
Hey Testudo, when does outdoor field hockey start and is it shown on televison? (Megan)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Megan! The two time defending National Champion Maryland Terrapin Field Hockey Team will begin their season in Fall 2007. Although most field hockey games are typically not televised, the television schedule and ACC select web casting schedule will not be released until closer to the Fall. Go Terps!
Hello, I love watching Maryland Womens basketball and my most favorite player of all time is Shay Doron. Would you happen to know any way that I could possibly write a letter to her? (Betty)
Testudo's Reply:

What is the Records for- points per game, rebounds per game (leading rebounder), Assists per game (leading Assister)? (Taylor)
Testudo's Reply: Hi Taylor! The player who holds the record for most points scored in a game is Ernest Graham who scored 44 points versus N.C. State on December 20th, 1978. The record for rebounds in a game is Len Elmore with 26 versus Wake Forest on February 27th, 1974. Finally, the record for assists in a game is held by Terrell Stokes with 15 versus Western Carolina on November 14th, 1998.
I have to do a report on the Terps men's basketball team, the team I picked to win the national championship, and I need 6 facts about the team. Can you help me? (Ryan)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Ryan! I love the school pride and spirit you show with your prediction! I, too, wanted to see the Terps win the national championship. Unfortunately we fell short in a close, heartbreaking game! The report you are doing also sounds interesting! If you need facts about the team, I suggest you visit the men's basketball webpage. Here is the link:

There are lots of cool links on the right hand side of the page, including the media guide, that you can click on to get information. Good luck on your report and thanks for writing! GO TERPS!
My sister Kristi Toliver plays for the Lady Terp basketball team. What is your opinion on the women's team losing in the second round of the NCAA tournament? What do you think of my sister Kristi's performance as a point guard? (Carli)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Carli! Thank you for your question! Your sister sure is a huge contributor to the Maryland team! The loss was disappointing and I believe the difference was points scored on turnovers for Mississippi. They really seemed to capitalize on our mistakes and down the stretch were able to hold off a late Terrapin surge.
I must also say, however, that Kristi Toliver finished the season with some very impressive marks! By knocking down three three-pointers in the final game, she set a new Maryland single-season record in three-pointers with 72 on the season. The 24 points Toliver scored in the final game also was a new season-high for her and the 161 assists she had on the season set the record for a sophomore at Maryland, passing the previous record set by Carla Holmes (158) in 1988-89. Your sister is a fantastic player and I'm so excited we will have her around for another two years! GO TERPS!
I am a life-long Terps fan and will be attending Maryland next fall. However I am surrounded by a bunch of "Terp Haters" on the West Coast but defend them till the end. How else should I deal with them Testudo? (Kyle)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Kyle! Well, it doesn't sound like you are going to have to deal with those West Coast "Terp Haters" you speak of for much longer because you are about to be living in Terpland! I am so very excited that you selected Maryland as the institution you wanted to receive a higher education at because I couldn't think of a better place to do so! You REALLY must be dedicated to travel that far, but I know it will be worth it for you! Wear your red, black, and gold with pride along the Pacific because you and I both know Maryland is the best school in the country! Welcome to the Terp Family! Go Terps!
Who was number 13 on the '05 Terps Men's Basketball Team? (Matt)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Matt! If you are referring to the '04-'05 season, the number 13 jersey was worn by Chris McCray, a 6'5" guard from Capitol Heights, Maryland.
Hey Testudo! I was on TV today (3/13/07)on WJZ with a picture of me, my brother, and my sister rubbing the lucky statue of a turtle right outside of the doors of the Comcast Center! Now i wish i could only get a picture with you! You are my favorite mascot ever!! Keep up the good work! (Lauren G)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Lauren! That is so cool that you and your siblings were on TV! Better yet, not only were you on TV, but you were rubbing a turtle statue outside of one of my homes on campus...the Comcast Center! Hopefully sometime at one of the games you can get my attention and take a picture with me. I like pictures, it is just so hard to see everyone with so many fans there! Regarding your questions about women's basketball player autographs and camp, I am honestly not sure and of course they are leaving now for the big dance...the NCAA Tournament! I'm sorry I wasn't more help but maybe I'll have the chance to ask them someday!
Are you looking forward to Buffalo? (Phyllis)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Phyllis! Yes, I'm so excited for Buffalo. I can't wait to cheer on the Terps as they start their run for another trip to the Final 4 in Atlanta. Make sure you and all the Terp fans out there watch Thursday at 12:20pm when Maryland takes on Davidson. Go Terps!!
What do you think Shay Doron will do after she leaves Maryland. GO TERPS! (Isabella C.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Isabella! I am not sure what Shay's plans are, although if it is to pursue basketball at the next level I will still remain one of her biggest fans! However, no matter what she does, I know that Shay Doron will stay close to the Maryland Family. Who knows, maybe she could even help coach the Terps one day. She has been a great team leader here and she will be greatly missed! GO TERPS!
I am a huge fan of the Maryland men's basketball team. I think Greivis Vasquez is the best freshman in the game. My friend though, thinks that Eric Hayes is better. What are your thoughts? (Joe S.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Joe! Greivis Vasquez and Eric Hayes were both great additions to the Terrapin roster this year and it has been awesome how well they've played in their first year for the Terps. Greivis has provided great emotional lifts and dazzling highlights while Eric has protected the ball on offense and knocked down some huge shots. I would have to say I agree with you both because I can't say which one is better. I think they are both awesome and are equally important to the success of our team! Go Terps!
How do you feel about the loss to Miami? And were you there? Go Terps!!!! P.S. You are awesome!!!! (P.B.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi P.B.! The Terps' loss to Miami was quite frustrating to witness in person as I'm sure it was for all you fans out there. But in some aspect it gave the Terps a chance to regroup and then rest for the upcoming NCAA tournament which starts in a few days. Go Terps!
Hi Testudo, who is your favorite men's basketball player of all time? (John M.)
Testudo's Reply: Great question John! It's so hard for me to pick a favorite of all time. There have been so many awesome players not only in the Terp family but in men's basketball also. I would have to say that a few of my favorites were Len Bias and Juan Dixon. Dixon led the team to our last national championship in 2002 and is now the Maryland's all-time leading scorer. He never ceased to amaze me with the things he did during the games and was a really nice person to talk to outside of the gym as well.
Can predict how far Terp basketball will go in the NCAA field? (Csms)
Testudo's Reply: Well Csms, I can definitely not claim to be an expert bracketologist working for ESPN. However, I feel extremely confident that Maryland will at least reach the Sweet 16, focusing on one opponent at a time. Most likely they will then face the defending national champion Florida Gators in that round. There is no doubt in my mind that Coach Williams will have the Terps poised for an upset and if that happens, the sky is the limit for this Maryland team! I know with the support of all the fans, the players and coaches will give every ounce of effort possible to achieve their goal of another run at the national title. Go Terps!
I like Maryland and I am gonna go to college there and you're my favorite mascot and I want to play football there and Go Terps!!!!!!!! (Troy M.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Troy!! I'm so glad to hear that you love the Terps as much as I do. Thanks for your support! I hope to see you playing football here in a few years!
How How do you feel when the Terps lose a game? (Max V.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Max! I certainly would prefer to see the Terps win a game, but I'm always very supportive of the team, no matter what the outcome of the game is. Win or lose, I just love cheering on the Terps at all times!
How many basketball jersey numbers have been retired and who are they? Thanks Testudo. (Joe)
Testudo's Reply:
Great question, Joe! Maryland Athletics has honored the jerseys of 15 men's basketball players, along with 3 from the women's squad. Honored jerseys from the men's team include: 3 (Juan Dixon), 6 (Bosey Berger), 15 (John Lucas), 22 (Keith Booth), 23 (Steve Francis), 25 (Steve Blake, Gene Shue), 32 (Joe Smith), 34 (Len Bias), 35 (Lonny Baxter), 41 (Len Elmore), 42 (Walt Williams), 52 (Buck Williams), 54 (Tom McMillwn), and 55 (Albert King). The three women's jerseys are 4 (Jasmina Perazic), 23 (Vicky Bullett), and 44 (Tara Heiss). You can see all of these jerseys represented with a banners hung from the rafters of Comcast Center.
Do you think that Maryland should be in the top 20 among lacrosse teams? (Sam)
Testudo's Reply:
Thanks for your question, Sam! I absolutely think that Maryland should be among the top 20 lacrosse teams. The Terps have a lot of talent, and at this point in the season the men are ranked No. 10 in national polls. Hopefully that number will climb with the coming games. The women just beat Duke in a nailbiter last Saturday and have moved up the polls to No. 3! Go Terps!!
I am 4 years old and the Terps have the best basketball and football teams. What do you like to eat? Also, how old are you? (Justin Kramer)
Testudo's Reply: Hi Justin, thanks for supporting the Terps. I may have mentioned this earlier, but I absolutely love to eat cereal. It's fast, it's easy, and it tastes great! I think for me to select a favorite, though, a cereal manufacturer would need to invent a cereal such as "Swamp Krispies" or something more tailored to my Terrapin Tastebuds! In regards to my age, I was made the official mascot in 1932, which makes me 75. Wow, am I getting old or what? I try to stay as active as I can by cheering at all of the games, so hopefully fans think I'm much younger!
Is Maryland the hottest team out there or what? How far do you think we will go in the tournament? (Craig)
Testudo's Reply: Well Craig, you sure do have that right, Maryland is a very hot team right now! The Terps are coming off of a seven-game winning streak, and preparing to play their first ACC tournament game tomorrow. I think that between the youthful energy of newcomers Eric Hayes and Greivis Vasquez, and the veteran play of D.J. Strawberry, the Terps have a really good chance of making it far into the tournament this year. Go Terps!
Hi, I heard you got second place for the mascot of the year. Who got first? I think you are the best : ) (John T.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi John! The winner of the contest was Butch T. Cougar from Washington State University. Thanks for your support! Go Terps!
How does it feel to be in that big suit for like two hours? (Davis Weddle)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Davis! I love every minute of being in my suit. I have a great staff that takes care of me and makes sure I have plenty of water to drink during the games. I could cheer all day for great fans like you!
Go Terps!
Wow what a great win over UNC. What did you think of the game and the crowd? (Craig)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Craig! That was an unbelievable win! The crowd atmosphere was absolutely amazing. Without a doubt that was one of the best games played in the Comcast Center! I'm so proud of our fans and our Terps!
Who is the men's basketball all time leading scorer? (Kirk)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Kirk! The Men's basketball all-time leading scorer is currently Juan Dixon who played on the 2002 National Championship Team.
Do you think that Maryland should be ranked? (Andrew)
Testudo's Reply: Hi Andrew! Yes, in fact Maryland is currently ranked thanks to their huge win over the Tar Heels this past weekend. They are currently ranked #24 and I could not be more proud of them! Go Terps!
During Maryland Terrapin men's basketball games, there is a song that is pumped into the Comcast Center which ALWAYS gets the crowd rocking. We call it the "Whoa Whoa" song-but certainly that is not correct. Hope you can help! We need to download it to our ipods! (Gene Murphy)
Testudo's Reply: Hi Gene! The name of the song is "Zombie Nation". The artist is Kernkraft 400. It is a great song to get fans hyped! Hope you enjoy!
What are you gonna do during the summer since there are not a lot of major sports going on? (Cameron)
Testudo's Reply: Hi Cameron! This summer I plan on exercising frequently and remaining in good physical condition while practicing my game routine so I can cheer on the Terps as soon as the Fall sports begin! Go Terps!
At the beginning of women's games there is music that is played as well as the Noise maker. I was wondering if you knew who the artist is of the music? (Julie)
Testudo's Reply: Hi Julie! The music that is being played during the beginning of the women's game is by the artist Yung Joc. The name of the song is "It's Goin Down" instrumental. Hope you enjoy it! Go Terps!
How did you do in the national mascot contest? I have never found out. Think you are great! (Kathy)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Kathy! I actually finished in 2nd place in the Capitol One Bowl mascot contest. Although I didn't come in first, I want to thank you and everyone else for all your votes! All of your continuous support makes me love my mascot duty even more! Go Terps!
Why did you get a new head? Is the material supposed to withstand more 'nose rubbing'? (Heather)
Testudo's Reply:
Yes it is true I upgraded to a new and improved head! The old one was worn out from all your great nose rubs, so I retired it and saved it since I'm so proud of it! Thanks to everyone for all the great nose rubs and make sure you keep them coming!
Go Terps!
What do you do on days when there are no sporting events going on? (Heather)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Heather! On days when there are no sporting events I make sure I keep busy practicing my performance for all of you great fans! Also, I make sure all the players and coaches are working hard everyday in their practices so they can do great in the games!
Go Terps!
What do you that makes you hype before the games? (Andrew)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey Andrew!
It's very easy for me to get hyped for the games. This is because I have many great fans like you there ready to cheer on the Terps and that makes me extremely excited! I hope you and all the other fans will continue to come out and support all of our Terps!
We want to know if we can get your autograph and kiss you on the nosie? (Marissa and Chelsea)
Testudo's Reply:
I would be honored to meet you and sign an autograph for you as well as receive a kiss on my lucky nose! Make sure you come up and say hi to me the next time you attend a basketball game. I look forward to meeting you two!
Do you think the Terps can rally and win the next four games? (Zack)
Testudo's Reply:
The Terps have a tough schedule in these next few games with some intense ACC matchups. It will be difficult to win four straight games, especially the ones on the road. However, I know Coach Williams and the players have been working very hard in practice and will prepared to fight hard in every game. Go Terps!
How many points does Greivis Vasquez average per game? (TERPS FAN #1)
Testudo's Reply:
Greivis Vasquez is currently averaging just under 10 points a game. He is becoming one of the best freshman guards in the country and is constantly improving while helping lead the Terps to victory!
What date does the Men's ACC tournament in Greensboro start? (Drew L.)
Testudo's Reply:

How did you feel about the win over Duke? (Brad 13)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Brad! I felt great about the win over Duke! That win helped move the Terps into a better position in the ACC standings and also gives them a better chance of qualifying for the NCAA tournament. It's always exciting to be a part of such a great crowd and cheer on the Terps to a win over the Blue Devils!
Do you think Maryland will beat North Carolina in men's college basketball? (Nicky D.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi there Nicky! I'm glad you asked your question again because I don't think I got to it last week! As you know, North Carolina is currently ranked 5th in the country and are a very talented team. While it will be a very difficult game, I know Coach Williams will have his team prepared to play and with the help of our great home crowd hopefully the Terps will walk away with a victory over those Tarheels!
I went to the Maryland vs Clemson game and I painted my face to show my spirit! I slapped your hand once too! (Drew L.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi again Drew! That is awesome! The Clemson game sure was exciting, don't you think? The crowd was really rockin' that night and I know you were a part of it. If you slapped my hand I must have loved your spirit, because it sounds like you had a lot! Will you get to see the Terps at any more home games this season?
Does the men's basketball team have any good recruits coming in next year? (Justin S.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Justin! The Terrapins have some extremely exciting recruits who will be joining the Terps' basketball family in the 2007 season. I can't give out any secret insider information but I can promise you that Coach Williams and the rest of his coaching staff have been working extremely hard to recruit players that will definitely help the Terps work towards their goal of contending for another National Championship.
Do you think the Terps will make it to the NCAA tourney this year? (Andre W.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Andre! The Terps play in arguably the most competitive conferences in the nation, the Atlantic Coast Conference. Therefore, it is a huge challenge each year to be successful in the ACC. This year, just like any other, there are some great teams the Terps are facing. Coach Williams and the Terps are working extremely hard everyday in practice as well as the games to reach one of their goals - the NCAA tournament. I have no doubt that if they continue to play hard and remain focused on their goal they will have a great shot of accomplishing this!
Does Eric Hayes have a fan club? If so please let me know because I want to join it, due to the fact that he is the BOMB. Very similar to the Stevie B. (Justin S.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi there Justin! I don't know about any fan clubs, although I'm sure there is at least one that exists! Hayes has definitely made an impact on the team this season and is admired by many -- including yours truly!
Do you think Greivis Vasquez and Eric Hayes make Maryland so much better? (Drew L..)
Testudo's Reply:
Drew, I think you are absolutely right! These two freshman have proven to be strong additions to the Terrapin lineup and have exemplified great ball handling skills in tough situations! It will be fun to watch them grow over the next three years as sometimes it's so easy to forget they are only freshmen!
I live in Massachusetts and there are few BC fans. There's actually a decent amount of Terps fans here too. Do you think Maryland has the most spirit in the ACC? (Drew L.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Drew! I hope that you are one of those Terp fans that live in Massachusetts! I strongly believe our Terrapin fans have the most AND BEST spirit in the ACC. However, I also think there is always room for MORE! I get so excited when I see fans wearing their red and black to games, Terp flags on cars, and on their feet cheering loudly at our events! My goal is to have as much spirit as possible...including the spirit of our ACC opponents! How do you show your spirit?
When will the 2007 football schedule be released? (Taylor)
Testudo's Reply:

The Terps open their season at home against Villanova, a team we haven't been matched up against in over 20 years! I'm definitely excited for the season...are you planning on going to any of the games?

What do you think about Shay Doron? (Alexis N.)
Testudo's Reply:
To quote head coach Brenda Frese, "[Shay Doron] is one of the most important players to ever play in this program." Doron has had a stellar career here at Maryland. To name just a few honors: Doron was the first freshman in school history to be nominated to the All-ACC team, she shares the NCAA record for most free throws made in a game (23), and participated in the 2005 Maccabi Games in Israel, where she led the USA to a 5-0 record and a gold medal! But the awesome thing about her is that she is a great person as well! She has served as a team representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (S.A.A.C.) and when asked who the all-stars are on her team, Shay replied, "We are all all-stars in my eyes and complete each other." Sometimes the players come back out of the tunnel after games to sign autographs--I hope you get to meet her one day!
Most know of Gary Williams and Bob Wade, and of course Lefty Driesell, but who were the Maryland Basketball coaches before these people? (Lee M.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Lee! Thanks for your question! Here is a run-down of the history of Maryland Men's Basketball coaches:

What is your favorite TV show? (Justin S.)
Testudo's Reply:
I LOVE the cartoon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Did you hear that there is going to be a new movie coming out in the Spring with them? I'm so excited! Also, when I was a younger turtle, there was a show my mom would never let me watch called "Swamp Thing"...but I always thought it was a cool name!
Testudo, I like Maryland and for Christmas I got a Sam Hollenbach jersey and I got a Maryland phone from your friend! (T. M.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi T.M.! Those are some awesome Christmas presents! Was Sam one of your favorite Terrapin football players this past season? He was definitely one of mine!
Testudo, what will be the final score of the Maryland vs Duke game this year? (Ross)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Ross! Well, I'm not sure which sport you are specifically referring to. However, I'm assuming you mean either our men's OR women's basketball team. While our women had a tough loss last weekend, I am confident that they will bounce back against those Blue Devils when we play them in OUR house! Our men take on the Blue Devils at home one week before the women and I predict they will set the stage for Brenda and her team with a victory. It should be a tough battle, but I bet our Terps come out with the higher score!
How do you get to the Comcast Center? Do you drive? Crawl? Do you live in the Comcast Center? (Brad S.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Brad! Thanks for your question! To tell you the truth, the whole campus is my home. I kind of think of it as one big house. The Comcast Center is part of it, but so is Byrd Stadium, the various libraries, parking structures, and dorms. I have a pretty nice lawn too, don't you think? I'm lucky to have so many visitors in my home and to be honest, the hearts of so many Terrapin fans live on this campus that I never feel alone!
Why do more people go to the men's basketball games even though the women's basketball team just won the national title and is number 1? (Kali)
Testudo's Reply:
Did you hear that the women's basketball UNC game on Sunday, January 28th and the Duke game on Sunday, February 18th have sold out? This will mark the second and third time the women's basketball team has sold out a game, with it being the first time in the Comcast Center. These two games will also mark the largest attendance to ever watch a women's basketball game in ACC history. So, it looks like many fans ARE beginning to realize that not only do we have an exciting men's team to watch, but a women's team too! Tickets for the remaining women's basketball games are selling fast. Will I see you at the Comcast Center?
What is your address? (Sevengia B.)

What is your favorite color? (Kevin)
Testudo's Reply:
Kevin, this is a tough question because I think many colors look good with my shell! However, I think it is safe to say that RED is my favorite color! What is yours?
I am trying to find the roster for last season's men's basketball team. Can you help? (David S.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi David! Visit umterps.com, go to the men's basketball page, and click on "archives" which is found near the upper right hand corner. That link will pull up the opportunity to view various archives from past seasons. Under the 2005-2006 heading, you should find a clickable link labeled "roster". There are some exciting things to reflect on under the archives section! Good luck!
What is your favorite cereal? (Justin S.)
Testudo's Reply:
Cereal is so great, isn't it Justin? It's fast, it's easy, and it tastes great! I think for me to select a favorite, though, a cereal manufacturer would need to invent a cereal such as "Swamp Krispies" or something more tailored to my Terrapin Tastebuds!
I was wondering about the essay contest (Jr. Terps). Does it have to be a certain number of words? Also, what is the topic? (Alexis)
Testudo's Reply:
I'm so glad you are interested in the essay contest Alexis! The Ameritel Scholarship Contest is open to all Jr. Terps members. The essays are due for this spring's contest on Friday, February 2, 2007. The essay question is: "Tell me what team you think is the Terps' biggest rival." The prize for the winning essay is a $1,000 scholarship! If you need more information or want to sign up to be a Jr. Terp, check out my website at http://umterps.cstv.com/ot/jr-terps-club.html.
What do you think about Terry Rupp's Terps Baseball team this year? (Justin S.)
Testudo's Reply:
Justin, you asked a lot of questions this week and I'm going to answer another one! I'll tell you one thing: I'm excited for the Terps' baseball season this year. Did you know that all the games that fall on a week night are FREE? That's right! AND we have such an exciting schedule. We play 8 teams who participated in the 2006 NCAA Tournament, including College World Series runner-up North Carolina! Rupp has a large incoming class of seven freshman and junior left-hander Brett Cecil has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2007 Roger Clemens Award. I hope to see you at Shipley Field this season!
What should I do, as a high school student, to enter the Terps' soccer team in the future in order to be a member of your Terps' family? (Lesage)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Lesage! Thank you for your question! It sounds like you are really motivated to play for our soccer team and I can't blame you! It is an exciting program to be a part of! I'm sure you are working on your skills to make yourself better everyday. Have you tried talking to someone from the Maryland soccer family? However, keep in mind that there are many ways to be a part of the Terrapin family and with your enthusiasm and pride in Maryland athletics I hope that you find a way that is a good fit for you!
What is the boys basketball team's record? (Taylor M.)
Testudo's Reply:
Good question Taylor! As of today (Dec. 27) our men's basketball team's record is 11-2. However, with two home games this upcoming weekend (Dec. 28 and 31) versus Mount St. Mary's and Siena, if our team plays like I know they can, we will hopefully start the new year with a record of 13-2!
Do you think by the way Mike Jones is shooting his threes he will be able to get up to 150 threes this year? (Brian)
Testudo's Reply:
Mike Jones sure is exciting to watch, isn't he Brian? Currently, (after their game on Dec. 23rd) he has made 34. I agree it would be awesome if he gets up to 150 three pointers this season. However, more impressively, he is boasting a .455 average (34-73) which means he is taking smart shots within his range. I think if the opportunity is there, he could hit your mark. However, I will be even more satisfied if he takes his shots at the right times, contributing to his team's overall efforts.
How many national titles does our women's basketball team have? (Philippe D.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Philippe! Last year's national championship by our Terrapin women's basketball team was the first for the program. However, Maryland has come close before, reaching the final four on two other occasions (1981-82 and 1988-89). The team is definitely working hard to earn their second straight national championship this season and are off to a good start. They are exciting to watch and I'm looking forward to following and supporting them for the rest of the season! Will I see you at any of their games?
How do you feel about going to the Capital One Bowl finals? I hope you win. (Terp Terrapin)
Testudo's Reply:
Hey there! I sure hope I win too because I try to be the #1 mascot in the country and it would be pretty awesome to be recognized as so! The voting has been completed and now I just have to wait and see. The winner will be announced at halftime at the Capital One Bowl on January 1st so be sure to tune in! The game starts at 1pm ET.
Why should I want to go to Maryland? (Sophia H.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Sophia! Thanks for your question! I LOVE the University of Maryland for so many reasons, but I will share a few with you. To start, we have an exciting athletics program that annually participates in an excellent conference and is among the best competition in the country. However, I won't stop there. We have a beautiful campus that embraces its history and encourages the restoration of buildings to help them remain consistent with the red brick you see everywhere! We also have many great academic programs in which our students receive a top notch education. Finally, the people here are friendly and have LOTS of school spirit. Everywhere I go I see people wearing University of Maryland gear and I love it! What a great way to show your pride!
Why are you so awesome in every way? You are much better than a Blue Devil, Demon Deacon, Cavalier, Tiger, Eagle, Seminole, Hokie, Wolf, Tar Heel, Hurricane, and a Yellow Jacket. Also, who do you think will win the Duke game and how big will the riot be? Thanks. (Bayard M.)
Testudo's Reply:
I love your enthusiasm Bayard! That is awesome that you are a huge fan of Maryland (and me of course). I have so much pride in this university that I hope to spread to others and it is encouraging when it works! Now, about that Duke game. While I sure hope there aren't any riots (someone could get seriously hurt!) I do hope for a victory! Right now, both our men's and women's basketball teams have upcoming home games in February against the Blue Devils and I anticipate a battle! All teams are looking good right now and when a rivalry is in the air, both teams always seem to bring their "A" game. Will I see you there?
What's the Terps' all-time record in bowl games? (Brace)
Testudo's Reply:
A perfect question, Brace, as bowl season just kicked off. Maryland's all time record in bowls is 8-10-2. Their first bowl game was against Georgia in the Gator Bowl, played on January 1, 1948. The game ended in a 20-20 tie. Hopefully my Terrapins come out strong against the Boilermakers next week and make that all-time record change to 9 wins instead!
Do you have a family? (Katie)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Katie! I am proud to say that I have one of the biggest and best families in the world! Know why? Because my family consists of over 35,000 current Maryland students, alumni all over the world, and top notch faculty and staff that keep our University going strong and take care of me too! What more could a Terrapin ask for?
Can you tell me the title of the music that just precedes the introduction of the Terps (men's basketball) starting lineup at the Comcast Center? It's a great pep tune. (Rob L.)
Testudo's Reply:
Rob, I completely agree! I'm sure you can see that the song definitely pumps me up too because I start dancing at center court! The song title is "Zombie Nation" by Kernkraft 400.
What are you wishing to get for Christmas? (Justin S.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi again Justin! This holiday season I am, of course, keeping my toes crossed for many victories! We have an exciting bowl game as well as home basketball games for both the men and women. I must admit that a shell warmer would be nice too--for some of those late season football games that get a bit chilly!
Do you think our Terps can win the Champs Sports Bowl? (Brace)
Testudo's Reply:
Thanks for your question Brace! I think we are in for an exciting game! Both teams have very similar records and come from tough conferences. Did you know that Maryland has never met Purdue on the football field before? In fact, the last time the Terps faced a Big Ten opponent in a bowl game was 1977 when Maryland defeated Minnesota 17-7 in the Hall of Fame Bowl. Let's hope history repeats itself! I think our Terps are going to show up ready to play and, with the loyal support of our fans making the trip to Orlando, will be able to pull off the victory!
What individuals wear the numbers 17 and 21 for the football team? (Connie)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Connie! Are you as excited about the Terps going to Orlando as I am? Number 17 for our Terps is sophomore wide receiver Danny Oquendo from Hackensack, New Jersey. Number 21 is Tailback Keon Lattimore, a junior from Owings Mills, Maryland. You can find out more information about the Terp football team and specific information about each player by visiting umterps.com. Simply go to the football page and then select the "roster" link.
Do you think I can be a mascot? (Kyle W.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Kyle! Any student at the University of Maryland can try out to represent our mascot! The most important thing to remember is to keep a positive attitude. I am always supporting our teams, whether we are winning or losing, and I hope to share it with our awesome fans and student-athletes.
Your thoughts on Maryland going to the Champs Sports Bowl? (Justin S.)
Testudo's Reply:
Let's see Justin: palm trees, warm sunny weather, and Disneyworld. Does life get much better than this? All joking aside, I am extremely excited about our upcoming trip to the Champs Sports Bowl. Our Terps have the opportunity to face a tough opponent from a great football conference. Our team is focused and will be rested and ready to play. I'm really looking forward to a great ballgame!
Have the Terps ever won a national championship game? (Turtle Lover)
Testudo's Reply:
I'm willing to bet your real name isn't "Turtle Lover", but I definitely can't complain! Yes! The Terrapin football team won the regular season national championship in 1953, under head coach James M. "Jim" Tatum. In fact, after the Terrapins beat Miami 30-0, Hurricanes coach Andy Gustafson remarked, "Maryland has one of the greatest teams I've ever seen." 1953 also marked the first year the Terrapins competed in the Atlantic Coast Conference, as we tied No. 18 Duke for the inaugural conference title.
What is it like to be a mascot? (Kyle W.)
Testudo's Reply:
Thanks for your question Kyle! Of course, I LOVE the opportunity to be the mascot. I have the honor of respresenting a fine institution with a rich history of athletics and continued success. We have 27 teams comprised of some of the best student-athletes in the country! It is very exciting to be at the sporting events cheering on my fellow Terrapins...I'm sure you think so too!
Do you think that the women's basketball team will win the national championship? (JC)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi JC! Of course I have great faith in our women's basketball team! We had such an exciting season last year and didn't lose any starters carrying over to this season! It is sometimes tough to start out ranked No. 1 with the eyes of the country on you. However, my Terrapins are focused, working hard, and off to a great start! I think that if we take our season one game at a time and continue to play as a team, we will continue to accomplish even greater things!
What was the mascot before you? (Jason)
Testudo's Reply:
Perfect question Jason, as last week we talked about how the Terrapin mascot originated. I promised that this week I would tell you what the mascot was before me. Did anyone know the answer? Prior to 1932, when the Terrapin became the official school mascot, Maryland teams were called the Old Liners!
How many statues of you are there in College Park? (Justin S.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Justin! There are actually FIVE bronze statues of me on campus in College Park and half of one elsewhere. Has anyone seen all of them? The first bronze statue was created by former quarterback Edwin C. Mayo and originally kept watch in front of Ritchie Coliseum. It was later moved to Byrd Stadium and now finally resides in front of McKeldin Library, overlooking McKeldin Mall. To help protect it, the statue has since been filled with 700 additional pounds of cement (equaling 1000 total pounds!). Then, in 1992, a twin statue was created and placed outside the Football Complex locker room. It is the nose of this statue in which the Maryland players rub for good luck when they enter the football field. The other three statues on campus can be found on the other side of the Gossett Team House, outside the Alumni Center, and outside the ticket office at the Comcast Center. The half statue off campus is actually located at the Sports Museum in Baltimore, where the front half of Testudo appears to be crawling out of a wall.

Where did the name "Testudo" come from? (Justin S.)
Testudo's Reply:
Good question Justin! A lot of Terp fans have been asking me this question. There are a few different stories I've been told by my relatives. I do know that the Diamondback terrapin became the school mascot way back in 1932 by the suggestion of then head football coach Dr. H. Curley Byrd. How I was named "Testudo" is a bit mysterious. My name may have been developed from the scientific classification for turtle, testudines. Interestingly, the word testudo also comes from the Latin word for a protective shelter used for Roman soldiers heads, similar to a tortoise shell, so that could be the answer as well. Do you know what our mascot was before me? I'll tell you next week if you don't know!
Are you male or female? (Karen G.)
Testudo's Reply:
Hi Karen! Thank you for your question. While my persona is a boy, it is possible for any Maryland student to become Testudo regardless of their gender or skin color.
Do you think Maryland will win the ACC? (Paul B.)
Testudo's Reply:
I like the way you think Paul! I'm not sure which sport you are referring to, but Maryland Athletics is definitely exciting right now! Both our Field Hockey team and our Men's Soccer team are competing in the NCAA Tournament and our Men's and Women's Basketball teams are also turning heads by both starting off their seasons strong. In addition, our Football team, after picking up their fifth straight victory, remains tied for first place in the Atlantic Division! We have a big game this Saturday at Boston College. I hope everyone can watch it!
Don't you get hot in that shell at the games? (Bradley S.)
Testudo's Reply:
Not usually, Bradley, although the first few football games can get a little warm. However, when I look out on to the field and see my Maryland football players wearing those helmets and protective pads, it makes me feel more like the team. After all, my shell is used for protection, just like their equipment.
