Q&A With Linebacker Moise Fokou

Three years ago Moise Fokou was a walk-on for the Maryland football team following his transfer from Frostburg State. Now the established Sam linebacker enters his senior season looking to build on what has already been a productive career. Fokou sat down earlier this week to speak with umterps.com. Fokou and the Terps open the preseason next month and the regular season on Aug. 30.

With the season opener just over two months away, the University of Maryland football team is halfway through its summer workout program. Director of strength and conditioning Dwight Galt has overseen voluntary training for 103 players in preparation for the start of preseason camp on Aug. 4. Emphasizing discipline, expectations and encouragement during the weekday workouts, Galt has been impressed with what he has seen through four weeks from the senior-laden squad.

Four incoming freshmen for the Maryland women's lacrosse team have been named to the South Team for the 2008 Under Armour Lacrosse Classic. Kristy Black, Grace Gaeng, Karri-Ellen Johnson, and Liz Hamilton will all take part in the game. Maryland's four signees in the game is the second highest total for any school in the country.

San Antonio Spurs Select James Gist in NBA Draft

University of Maryland senior forward James Gist (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel HS) was chosen by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2008 NBA Draft Thursday night. Gist was taken in the second round with the 57th overall pick. He becomes the first Terrapin drafted by the Spurs since Tony Massenburg in 1990.

Three former Maryland Terrapins are bound for the 2008 Beijing Olympics in August. Terp All-Americans Lauren Powley, Dina Rizzo and Keli Smith were selected to the 16-member squad, which was announced on Monday night by USA Field Hockey. The three veteran members of the squad are making their first-ever appearance at the Olympic Games.

Terps Water Polo Recruits Garner Postseason Accolades

A pair of incoming University of Maryland water polo recruits claimed a stranglehold on prep postseason awards in South Florida to culminate their high school careers. Elina Goldenberg of Sunrise, Fla., was named Girls Water Polo Player of the Year by the South Florida Sun Sentinel, and Shelby Reyes of Miami, Fla., earned similar honors from the Miami Herald. Both will play for the Terrapins in the fall.

Terrapins Rising II To Air Nationwide

The second season of 'Terrapins Rising,' a reality television show chronicling Maryland's spring football practice, began last week when the first of 10 episodes aired on Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic. Maryland's Kelly Kasper was named the Most Valuable Player of the IWLCA/Under Armour Senior All-Star Game as the South defeated the North, 11-8, at the United Sports Training Center in Downington, Pa. The Eldersburg, Md., product recorded a hat trick in the game.
