E.J. Henderson and Autumn Welsh Named Maryland Student-Athletes of the Week

Nov. 6, 2001

COLLEGE PARK, MD. Junior criminology and criminal justice major E. J. Henderson (Aberdeen, Md.) and senior secondary education math major Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.) have been named the Maryland student-athletes of the week for their performances on the field the week of Oct. 29 - Nov. 4.

Henderson won his fourth ACC player of the week honor this season for his contribution to the football squad's eighth victory in 2001. He had a sack, forced fumble, pass break up, and a blocked punt to help the defense hold Troy State to just 14 points in route to the Terps' 47-14 victory over the Trojans. Henderson also recorded 10 tackles to bring his team-leading season total to 113 tackles, 77 of which are solo and 21 for loss. Henderson looks to continue his dominating defensive play Saturday Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. at Byrd Stadium as the football team takes on Clemson in the final home contest of the season.

Welsh led the No. 1-ranked field hockey team to its fourth consecutive ACC championship with wins against Virginia, 4-1 and Wake Forest, 3-2 in the ACC tournament this past weekend. Welsh, a 2000 All-American defensive back, anchors the Terps' defense that has recorded 10 shutouts this season. The senior back had an assist against Wake Forest and scored on a penalty stroke against the Cavaliers. Welsh's performance won her ACC tournament MVP for the second consecutive year, along with All-ACC team honors. Additionally she was named ACC co-player of the year after leading the Terps to a 17-3 record.
