Aug. 6, 2002

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Athletics director Deborah A. Yow announced today agreements with radio stations WBAL and WMAL to broadcast University of Maryland football and men's basketball for the next three years.

The respective agreements are for the 2002, 2003 and 2004 football seasons and the 2002-03, 2003-04 and 2004-05 men's basketball seasons. In addition, both stations will carry weekly coach's shows in both sports and selected women's basketball games.

WBAL (1090 AM) in Baltimore, consistently one of Maryland's most listened-to radio stations, will serve as the flagship station for the Terrapin Sports Network. WMAL (630 AM) in Washington, D.C., is this year's winner of the Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence from the Radio-Television News Directors Association.

Other stations on the network include WTBO-AM (Cumberland), WFMD-AM (Frederick), WARK-AM (Hagerstown), WMSG-AM (Oakland), WQMR-FM (Ocean City), WTGM-AM (Salisbury) and WTDK-FM (Cambridge/Easton).

The agreement with WBAL is the continuation of an alliance that began in 1984. WMAL will become the D.C. outlet for both sports after serving as the radio home for the Terps' men's basketball program for the past five seasons.

"We are extremely pleased to continue our association with both WBAL and WMAL for the next three years," said Yow. "Both partners provide a significant listening reach in two primary locales - Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Together with the rest of the stations on the network, these agreements enable us to continue to provide our Terrapin fans radio access to our games. When we outsourced our marketing to Viacom-owned Terrapin Sports Marketing, I expected reasonable results and a professional working relationship. TSM has significantly exceeded our customer service expectations by helping us secure the radio partners we wanted."

Said Ed Kiernan, vice-president and general manager of WBAL: "WBAL radio is proud to continue its relationship with University of Maryland athletics. WBAL's 50,000 watts provides an expansive listening reach in the mid-Atlantic region and will ensure that Terrapin fans will hear all the games loud and clear."

Said Tom Bresnahan, president and general manager of WMAL: "We are extremely privileged to be working with distinguished professionals like Coach Ralph Friedgen, Coach Gary Williams, athletics director Debbie Yow, the University of Maryland and the voice of the Maryland Terrapins, Johnny Holliday. Maryland basketball has a long, treasured tradition in the area, and Coach Friedgen is establishing a similar winning tradition with the football team. We are thrilled to have them as part of our lineup."
