Harman, Tibble Named ACC Scholar-Athletes
July 18, 2012
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Maryland baseball's Brett Harman and field hockey's Harriet Tibble were recognized by the Atlantic Coast Conference Wednesday as Maryland's 2011-12 Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year. The awards are presented annually to each of the league's 12 schools and recipients are selected by criteria determined by each institution.
"Brett and Harriett are exemplary student-athletes and truly represent what it means to be a Terrapin," director of athletics Kevin Anderson said. "They both display everything we expect of our student-athletes in terms of character, competitiveness and sportsmanship and are both committed to success in the classroom and on the field."
Harman, a native of Westminster, Md., has been a standout pitcher since he stepped on campus almost five years ago. After undergoing Tommy John surgery and missing the entire 2011 season, Harman had a stellar 3.04 ERA in 2012, which led to 2012 All-ACC second team honors.
Harman graduated in May with a degree in Kinesiological Sciences and earned the baseball team's Academic Achievement award. Harman earned Dean's List honors five times, was named to Athletic Director's Honor Roll in nine semesters, the ACC All-Academic Team in three of his four eligible seasons, and earned a perfect semester GPA of 4.00 five times.
Tibble, a junior from Surrey, England, is a standout defender on the reigning NCAA champion field hockey team. In each of her three seasons with the Terrapins, she helped lead them to the NCAA title game, winning two titles. Tibble was named to the 2011 NFHCA All-American second-team, the 2011 All-ACC Team, and the 2011 NCAA All-Tournament Team.
Tibble was named the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for field hockey in November. She was the recipient of the 2010 Carla Tagliente Award, given to the student-athlete exhibiting excellence in both the athletic and academic arenas, and was named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll each of her semesters at Maryland. Tibble is a double major studying International Business and Marketing at the prestigious Robert H. Smith School of Business.
