Gymnastics, Men's Cross Country Earn Team GPA Awards
May 1, 2006 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The women's gymnastics team and the men's cross country squad were announced as winners of the team awards on Sunday at the President's Cup Brunch held at the Riggs Alumni Center at the University of Maryland. Those teams were honored with the President's Cup Team Awards for having the best cumulative grade-point averages over the previous two semesters. The gymnastics team, which won for the sixth time in the 10-year history of the award, posted a 3.30 GPA to edge women's tennis (3.21) and women's swimming and diving (3.14). The men's cross country squad won for the fourth time in five years with a 3.05 cumulative GPA, edging tennis (3.04) and swimming and diving (3.03).
Also honored yesterday were teams which distinguished themselves in the NCAA's CHAMPS/Lifeskills Program. Honored for their commitment to academic excellence, athletic excellence, career development, personal development and community service were the women's cross country team and the football team. The Terrapin wrestling program was noted for winning the Atlantic Coast Conference sportsmanship award. Individuals who earned ACC Community Service Awards were Josh Wilson (football), Gretchen Kittelberger (gymnastics), Jason Garey (men's soccer), Allison Carney (women's cross country and track), Allie Houseal (water polo) and Nikki Resnick (women's soccer). The event was co-sponsored by the M Club and the Terrapin Club. Other award winners were: Intercollegiate Athletics Community Service Awards - Olivia Odom (competitive cheer), Josh Wilson (football), Jermaine Lemons (football), Wesley Jefferson (football), Gretchen Kittelberger (gymnastics), Nik Caner-Medley (men's basketball), Jason Garey (men's soccer), Allison Carney (women's cross country and track), Allie Houseal (water polo) and Nikki Resnick (women's soccer).
