Senior Day

Saturday's game vs. Colgate, which is a noon start at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium, will be the final regular season home game for nine Maryland seniors: Jake Bernhardt, Jesse Bernhardt, Owen Blye, Landon Carr, Kevin Cooper, Billy Gribbin, John Haus, Curtis Holmes and Mike Scheeler.

This senior class has a four-year record of 46-18 (.719), won an ACC championship and competed for another one, made it to two NCAA Final Fours and played in two NCAA championship games. This group of seniors was also an integral part of this season's success, which saw the Terps rise to the top of the rankings for the first time since 2006.

Here's hoping that all Maryland fans come into Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium a little bit early on Saturday to see these nine Terps be recognized prior to the game.

Preview: Colgate

The Raiders come into their final game of the 2013 season with an overall mark of 8-6, but Colgate is 5-3 in non-conference action this year and is 5-4 in road games.

Colgate is led by senior attackman Peter Baum, who was the 2012 Tewaaraton Award winner. This season he has a team-leading 45 points on 30 goals and 15 assists. He is joined on attack by sophomore Ryan Walsh, who has a team-best 31 goals to go along with eight assists, and junior Brendon McCann, who has 26 points on 19 goals and seven assists.

The Raiders main man at the faceoff X is senior Robert Grabher, who is winning .531 percent of his draw this season, but he has racked up 100 groundballs and is seventh in the NCAA with 7.43 groundballs per game.

Junior goalie Conor Murphy has started the last 10 games for the Raiders and has a 9.01 goals-against average this overall season.

NCAA Tournament Is Coming Up

The 2013 NCAA Tournament bracket will be revealed live on ESPNU on Sunday, May 5 at 9 p.m. The Terps could potentially be a top-eight seed and receive a bid to host a home game on the weekend of May 11-12. Details will be available on umterps.com following the selection show.

NCAA Quarterfinals at College Park

Fans shouldn't forget that the University of Maryland is a host site for the 2013 NCAA Quarterfinals, which will be played on May 18 at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium. The opening game of the doubleheader is set for a 12:30 p.m. start with a 3 p.m. scheduled faceoff time for the second game.

Tickets are on sale now and it's recommended that fans buy their tickets early. Click here to buy your tickets today.

The NCAA quarterfinals are some of the best days in lacrosse and have seen some amazing games and finishes. Since the tournament went to a 16-team format in 2003 there have been 18 quarterfinal games decided by two goals or less. Who could ever forget the Terps stunning No. 1 seed Syracuse in overtime in the 2011 NCAA quarters? Don't miss your chance to witness the action of the NCAA Quarterfinals live in College Park for the first time since 2001. Buy your tickets today!

Terps In The MLL

The 2013 Major League Lacrosse season is underway, having kicked off the MLL's 13th season last weekend. There are currently 18 Maryland alums playing in he MLL with at least one Terp on each of the league's eight teams.

Boston: Brian Farrell
Charlotte: Joe Cinosky, Brett Schmidt, Ryan Young
Chesapeake: Dan Burns, Dean Hart, Jeff Reynolds
Denver: Jeremy Sieverts, Drew Snider, Lee Zink
Hamilton: Joe Walters
New York: Ryder Bohlander, Grant Catalino
Ohio: Joe Cummings, Ray Megill, Brian Phipps, Max Schmidt
Rochester: Dan Groot

That total is expected to grow to 24 when the six Maryland seniors who were drafted by MLL teams join the league at the conclusion of the Terps' season. Owen Blye and John Haus are headed to Charlotte, while Jesse Bernhardt and Kevin Cooper are slated to be future Chesapeake Bayhawks. Landon Carr was selected by Denver and Jake Bernhardt was a Hamilton draftee from the 2012 draft.

NLL Playoffs

While the MLL season started last week, the Hamilton Nationals will have to wait a little bit longer to enjoy the services of Joe Walters. The four-time Maryland All-American is also a member of the National Lacrosse League's Rochester Knighthawks and Walters helped the Knighthawks advance to the NLL's divisional finals with a goal and two assists in the 10-8 win over the Philadelphia Wings in the semifinals.

The loss for Philadelphia means that Jeff Reynolds will be available to join the Bayhawks a little bit sooner, but not due to any fault of Reynolds, who scored a goal, added an assist and won 16-of-21 faceoffs in the semifinal defeat to Rochester.

Summer Camps

Youth and high school lacrosse seasons are in full swing and for those players looking to take their games to the next level and there's no better way to do that then at the Maryland Men's Lacrosse Summer Camps, Tournaments and Clinics.

For all of the information, including how to register online, go to: umterpslax.com.

Support Your Terps: Join The Faceoff Club

The commitment of the Terps and the Terrapin coaching and support staff is matched only by the commitment of the thousands of Maryland alums and fans. But attending games and cheering on your Terps are not the only things fans can do to support Maryland men's lacrosse.

The Face Off Club gives alumni and fans a way to support the Terrapins financially by directly donating to the Maryland men's lacrosse program.

A variety of goals and giving levels are outlined in the Face Off Club brochure, which can be accessed through TerrapinClub.com.

Support A Terp

Here's a way you can support a fellow Terp and a great cause at the same time. Please take some time to read the letter from Brian Carroll, who was a member of the Terrapin men's lacrosse team from 1999-2002.

Hello,

This summer I'll be representing Lead The Way Fund in a series of triathlons, culminating with IRONMAN Lake Placid on July 28th. I'll be competing in honor of my high school friend & teammate- Jimmy Regan. Jimmy & I were teammates at Chaminade, and went on to play lacrosse against each other in college. The Maryland-Duke games were always intense, but win or lose, Jimmy always had a smile for you after the game. As a result of losing 17 people from his hometown of Manhasset, N.Y., on 9/11, Jimmy felt compelled to walk away from job offers on Wall Street & a law school scholarship, & upon graduating from Duke, he enlisted as an Army Ranger.

Lead The Way Fund (LTWF) was established in Jimmy's memory after he made the ultimate sacrifice in February 2007, during what was to be his final tour of duty in Iraq. LTWF provides support for the families of injured & fallen Army Rangers. It is a fantastic charity, which does wonders for these military service members & their families. You can learn more about LTWF at www.leadthewayfund.org.

If you are in a position to do so, I'd appreciate any support you can give in my effort to raise money for this great cause.

http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/briancarroll/isupport-lead-the-way-2013

Thanks for your support!

Wrapping Up

That does it for the final regular season edition of the Maryland Men's Lacrosse Blog. We hope to see all of the Terp fans in the stands this Saturday as we recognize our nine seniors prior to their last regular season home game at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.

If you can't make it to College Park for the game you'll be able to catch all of the action on TerpsTV Premium.

And if that doesn't work, updates will also be going out on Twitter and Facebook, so "Follow" and "Like" to get all of the info sent to you wherever you are.

assistant is happy that you came, and she begins telling you a long story about

mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";color:#222222">After our unfortunate
loss against NC State, we had a brief meeting after the match, during which
Coach Panova told us that next week we were playing against some of the best
teams in the country, so the last thing we should be is scared to play. We have
to get out there and enjoy ourselves during our last matches this season, and
just fight and do our best.

The week passed by
pretty fast and I thought I just played against NC State yesterday, but nope,
it was already Friday and time to fight against Duke! I could feel the excitement
and tension in the air on Friday morning when we were having lunch in the team
room. Although everybody was pretty quiet, I could see in my teammate's eyes that
they were hungry to beat the No. 11 team in the country!

The doubles matches were
played at No. 1 and No. 2, so me and Gaby were cheering on the side. How hard it is
to watch from the side, and not be able to play! Sometimes you just want to run
on the court take the racquet and help your teammates to finish that
point/game. It is so much more stressful to watch them play. Maros, Dasha,
Welma, I understand you now completely! (Well, Welma is going to play with us
already next season, yay!!) When Sarah and Vroni won their doubles, which got
us a doubles point, my sixth sense was telling me that it's going to be a great
day for the Terps.

Even during my match
this feeling of overexcitement would not let me make smart, wise decisions on
the court. After I unfortunately finished my not so a long match, I started to
put all of my energy that wouldn't let me play calmly into cheering for my
teammates. After Gaby won her match (great job, it was awesome!) I was just
overwhelmed with feelings! That was the time when Vroni got to her third set.
It was really tight. Everybody was jumping and screaming after every point. I
honestly thought that I would cramp from the tension in my body! Those last few
points that Vroni played were probably one of the most stressful (in a good way
though) minutes of my life! Even when she was down 5-3, we were even
trying to follow some rituals before every point she played. And our senior did
it! Even being down 5-3, she beat that girl in the end! To say that I was happy
is like saying nothing. The only one who didn't really show any emotions was
Vroni, but considering that Vroni is one of the calmest people I ever seen in
my life it wasn't that surprising. How I understood that she was really happy?
When she suggested to celebrate our win by going into pouring rain and swimming in the pool that is on the mall! And guess what, we did it! That's how we
celebrated our great win over No. 11 team in the country. Also one of the greatest
things is that our coach Dasha promised to dye her hair red if we would beat
Duke. And surprisingly, she really did! Well, it wasn't really red, it was pink,
but that's not the point. The point is, my great respect to Dasha for keeping
her word!

After the day off on
Saturday we were about to face the No. 1 team in the country, and this day was
really special also because it was last match for Vroni, senior day! So everybody
got up early and went to the team room where we were supposed to meet for
breakfast. Welma and Sarah did a great job on organizing things. You should
guys do a major connected with creativity for sure! We made a surprise for our
dear Senior citizen by decorating the team room and presenting her a photo
frame with the picture signed by all of us. Before the match, we put a
"war paint" of our faces with red and black colors. Some of us even
painted our hair red with the washable paint so our coach didn't feel as bad.
It was a really fun preparation, I think we should incorporate it more in our
pre-match routine.

To be honest, playing
against UNC showed me how much we are capable of. Not taking into account
scores, we weren't much worse than our opponents. There are small, but
essential things that we need to change, but we are working on it! We are a
young team and still have a some things to learn, but I am sure that we are on
our way to success. Next season is going to get much better. And I want to say
thanks to our senior Vroni again for being a great leader of our team. I can
imagine how hard it is when there five freshman and you are the only one
experienced. But you taught us things, I remember you saying that the most
important part is that we have to be like a family. We're getting there, and
you played a large role in it. Great person, great roommate, and a great
teammate! I'm sure you will do fantastic in your life!

<span style="font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif";

I hope all is well with everyone and you guys are enjoying your last few weeks of school!

This past weekend, the GymTerps and other fellow student-athletes participated in a volleyball tournament to raise money for the Relay For Life Foundation. We had many different staff members and athletes from different sports come out for some fun competition to help support an amazing cause. There were over 100 students and staff members that attended enabling us to raise over $500.

This week we finally got back into the gym after a two-week break to enjoy the nice weather and buckle down on schoolwork. Monday was our first day back and it felt great to touch the equipment again. We are also having our end-of-the-year banquet this coming Friday to celebrate such an awesome season. As Lizzy said last week, we will be able to finally see our end of the year highlight video! I cannot wait to relive those AMAZING moments we had through the 2013 season!!

Thank you for being so supportive this season! We really appreciate it J

Sincerely,

First up will be a look at ACC tournament history in Chapel Hill, including the high-scoring affair the last time UNC hosted the event. The blog will then give a historical perspective on 20-save games. Let's get to it.

ACC Tournaments In Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill is the host site for the ACC tournament for the first time since 2009. Maryland is a combined 2-4 in five tournaments played on the UNC campus with the two victories coming in 2004 when the Terrapins defeated Duke in the semis and Virginia in the finals to claim its second conference tournament title.

The last time the ACC tournament was played in Chapel Hill it was held in Keenan Stadium, which also happens to be the site of this year's tournament. The biggest thing that jumps out from that tournament was the sheer number of goals scored in the three-game tournament.

A total of 75 goals were scored in the three games, which tied the tournament record for most goals in a tournament (1997).

In fact, the 2009 tournament was the first time since 1998 that the total number of goals topped 65. The highest goal total for the past 10 ACC Tournaments was 63 in 2007 when it was held at Duke.

Here's a look at the goal totals for every ACC tournament since its inception in 1989:

1989 - 49
1990 - 64
1991 - 64
1992 - 54
1993 - 64
1994 - 69
1995 - 70
1996 - 72
1997 - 75
1998 - 66
1999 - 52
2000 - 64
2001 - 56
2002 - 55
2003 - 56
2004 - 60
2005 - 53
2006 - 35 (2 games)
2007 - 63
2008 - 62
2009 - 75
2010 - 62
2011 - 62
2012 - 52

Some basic statistics on this list of totals:

Mean - 61.7
Median - 62
Mode - 64
Range - 40 (But that's counting the 2006 tournament that only had two games. The range in years with three games would be 26)

20-Plus Save Performances

A rare feat occurred on Saturday in the Terps' 8-7 win over Yale with junior goalie Niko Amato setting his career high with 24 saves vs. the Bulldogs. Amato was the first to give credit to his teammates for their efforts in the win over Yale, but 20-save performances don't happen that often.

In the 1,001 games the Maryland men's lacrosse team has played since becoming a varsity program in 1924 there have only been 29 games with 20 or more saves and only six 20-plus save games since the start of the 2000 season.

Amato's 24 saves is tied for the eighth-best total in program history and his .774 save percentage vs. Yale is the seventh-best in 20-plus save games.

Here's the list of the 20-plus save games for the Terps:

Saves (Pct.) - Player (W/L, Score - Opponent, Year)
34 (.708) - Bill Larash (L, 6-14 - Army, 1952)
29 (.690) - Steve Kavovit (W, 16-13 - at Brown, 1991 NCAA QF)
27 (.711) - Pat McGinnis (L, 6-11 - Virginia, 2000)
26 (.722) - Bryant Waters (W, 15-10 - vs. Navy, 1979)
26 (.867) - Sean Keenan (W, 12-4 - Rutgers, 1997)
25 (.757) - Matt Back (W, 9-8 - Virginia, 2003 ACC SF)
25 (.806) - Harry Alford (W, 13-6 - Georgetown, 2005)
24 (.585) - Bryant Waters (L, 11-17 - at Johns Hopkins, 1978 NCAA SF)
24 (.727) - Kevin Healy (W, 14-9 - Virginia, 1998)
24 (.774) - Niko Amato (W, 8-7 - Yale, 2013)
23 (.561) - Steve Kavovit (L, 8-18 - vs. North Carolina, 1991 ACC SF)
23 (.767) - Steve Kavovit (W, 13-7 - Rutgers, 1991 NCAA 1st)
23 (.561) - Matt Back (L, 10-18 - North Carolina, 1993 ACC F)
23 (.742) - Brian Dougherty (W, 11-8 - at Towson, 1993)
23 (.742) - Brian Dougherty (W, 16-8 - vs. Johns Hopkins, 1995 NCAA SF)
22 (.880) - Jim Kappler (W, 14-3 - Princeton, 1956)
22 (.629) - Sean Keenan (L, 9-13 - Johns Hopkins, 1997)
22 (.688) - Kevin Healy (L, 6-10 - at Johns Hopkins, 1998)
22 (.710) - Kevin Healy (W, 15-9 - at Duke, 1998)
22 (.880) - Pat McGinnis (W, 9-3 - Bucknell, 2000)
21 (.636) - Brian Dougherty (L, 7-12 - at North Carolina, 1994)
21 (.636) - Brian Dougherty (L, 10-12 - at Johns Hopkins, 1994)
21 (.700) - Pat McGinnis (W, 10-9 - Johns Hopkins, 2001)
20 (.606) - Jake Reed (W, 21-13 - Johns Hopkins, 1976)
20 (.690) - Steve Kavovit (W, 10-9 - vs. Virginia, 1991 ACC SF)
20 (.571) - Brian Dougherty (L, 11-15 - vs. Army, 1993 NCAA 1st)
20 (.690) - Brian Dougherty (L, 7-9 - Virginia, 1994)
20 (.800) - Sean Keenan (W, 10-5 - at Navy, 1997)
20 (.833) - Harry Alford (W, 9-4 - North Carolina, 2005)

Here's one other note on Amato's performance vs. Yale. His 24 saves are the second most by a Maryland goalie in a one-goal game. There have only been three other 20-plus save performances in a one-goal game. The first was Steve Kavoit's 20-save game in a 10-9 win over Virginia in the 1991 ACC semifinals. Matt Back had 25 saves in the 9-8 win over Virginia in the 1993 ACC semifinals. Pat McGinnis had 21 saves in a 10-9 win over Johns Hopkins in 2001. Amato's .774 save percentage is also the highest by a Terrapin goalie in a one-goal game.

Wrapping Up

That does it for another edition of the Maryland Men's Lacrosse Blog. Hopefully a lot of Terp fans will be able to make it down to Chapel Hill for a full weekend of lacrosse.

North Carolina is also the host school for the 2013 ACC Women's Lacrosse tournament and the Maryland women are also the No. 1 seed. The Terps are scheduled to play at 1 p.m. on Friday at Fetzer Field against either Duke or Virginia.

If fans can't make it to Chapel Hill they'll still be able to catch all of the men's tournament action with all three games being broadcast on ESPNU. A quick look at the ESPN3.com site and it appears the Maryland-Virginia semifinal will also be streamed on ESPN3.com. The UNC-Duke semifinal appears to be blacked out on ESPN3.com in the eastern and central time zones Fans can also check the WatchESPN App to see if the games are available on your mobile device.

Of course, updates will also be going out on Twitter and Facebook, so "Follow" and "Like" to get all of the info sent to you wherever you are.

As always - Be The Best!

This time Olga and I were roomies, and as all good
roommates do, we took part in deep, thought-provoking conversations. The
question of the day was this: if a tree falls and nobody is around to hear it,
does it make a sound?

The team insists that no, it doesn't...

But *I* still believe in you, tree-noise. I
believe in you like I believe in unicorns and Disney magic...

Agree to disagree.

Over dinner, the twins, Olya and I discussed
countries, different languages and our dream destinations (some of which
include Iceland, Thailand, France and New Zealand). In fact, we're in the
process of planning a great team trip to Siberia. (Better pack your parkas,
kids! It's gonna be cold!!!)

The next day, we played against the Wake Forest
Demon Deacons. We won the doubles point, which marked my and Olya's first win
as a doubles team, but we eventually lost in a very close singles match.
Afterwards, we drove down to Raleigh, where the team spent the rest of the
afternoon outside enjoying the beautiful weather, while I went and met up with
my Aunt and Uncle.

We went to dinner (Italian again... you gotta love
Italian), where we ate and attempted to decipher the strange and mysterious
hieroglyphics written on the walls. After seeing all of the unique and
inspiring 'artwork', we just had to get crayons. Unfortunately, there was a
strict 'no drawing on the walls' rule... but that's ok, the tables were covered
in paper. Of course, Olya and I spent dinner filling it with doodles and
SpongeBob drawings.

Meanwhile, Welma and Waiter Dan shared a very...
*special* moment. (By the way, Welma, Waiter Dan says 'Hi'...)

On Sunday, we played the NC Wolfpack. My family
came and cheered us on, and even though we lost again, we fought hard and
worked together as a team.

Unfortunately, teamwork and positivity just don't
numb the pain... so we stopped for comfort food on the way home, and Welma used
this opportunity to find many new and creative ways to scare Dasha.

After a long and tiring weekend, we arrived back
at campus, where we will proceed to kick our butts into high gear for this
week's upcoming matches.

Hey Terp Fans!

I hope you are all enjoying this April weather as much as we are!

After an incredible performance at Regionals and a great season in general, we received even more thrilling news. Not one, but TWO of my teammates were named All-Americans. Katy Dodds received the honor for vault, and Stephanie Giameo for beam. Seeing both of them compete in these events flawlessly throughout the season, we were all so excited to hear the news!

In addition, our two seniors, Ally Krikorian and Kesley Cofsky, both had a great Regional meet and season, so I am so thrilled for their accomplishments throughout their amazing careers at Maryland!

It was great to end season on such a high note. Now, we have a couple weeks off of gymnastics to rest our bodies, focus on our schoolwork, and enjoy the spring-time weather! After that, I can't wait to start preparing for next season. This means tons of new skills in the gym! We accomplished a top-25 ranking... Do I hear top 15 next year?!

Next week we'll have our end-of-year banquet, where just our team and coaches gather to celebrate our accomplishments this season and unveil this year's highlight video. By the looks of this season, I know it will be awesome! I can't wait to see the final product.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for your support this season!

Sincerely,

We practiced with our heart and soul this week before heading to Gainesville, Fla., on Thursday! We killed our team event days and were excited to show everyone what Terps are made of!

Just as we were all ready to pack and leave the coaches surprised us with some NEW GEAR! I personally love getting new gear so I was wicked excited!! The Terps each got a new shirt, new capris, and a new zip up jacket. And I must say, we looked pretty sharp!

Competing was such a thrill; the team was full of energy and enthusiasm. We hit routine after routine! It was an amazing feeling to be a part of. We couldn't have ended the season any better. WE'RE No. 22 IN THE NATION!! I am so proud of everyone this year! Not only did we post the second-best finish in our NCAA history, but the team got closer as a family. It's an incredible feeling to know we did amazing this season, but it's even more amazing when you did it with 16 of your sisters by your side.

Thank you for all those who helped us this year, we couldn't have gotten this far without the support of our fans and family.

Thanks for reading,
we got back to preparing for our matches against no. 10 Miami and no. 20 FSU.
Practice was a bit different this week because some of us were sick or had a lot

ready for our ACC sunshine state schools.<span style="font-size:10.0pt;

breakfast at Plato's before heading to the courts. During warm-up Tally got
accidentally hit by a ball which gave her a bad nose bleed a few minutes before
the match. The twins had to take a bleeding time-out to stop Tally's nose
bleed, but unfortunately they had to retire doubles. The other 2 doubles were
fighting hard to get the doubles point. Even though Sarah and I had a great
doubles win, we weren't able to secure the doubles point. Luckily, Tally's nose
bleed had stopped and she was ready for singles. But it didn't go as well as we
wanted to and lost all our singles matches. It was a disappointing loss but we
had to look forward to our next match against FSU on Sunday.

The next day, we had
team practice and Welma got to play in her first field hockey game after
joining the team earlier this semester. Welma was really excited to finally
compete again. Her last tennis match was in October before having shoulder
surgery. We (Olya, Sarah, Tally, Burce, Dasha and I) went to see Welma and our
field hockey team play against the defending national champion Princeton and
beat them 3-0. After the game, we all went to dinner at Ledo's where we had a
great time especially Welma.

Sunday we had team breakfast again at Plato's (they should know our orders by
now) before our warm up against FSU. It was our second home outdoor match of
the season. In the morning it was chilly, but after the warm-up the sun was out
and it seemed like a beautiful day for an upset. Unfortunately, we weren't able
to get into the match and make it hard on FSU. We were already down 5-0 before
we got our first win of the day at no. 1 singles.Gabby came close to our

Hey Terps Fans!

After a few days on the road in the
South, the team and I just finished wrapping up back to back matches against
Clemson and Georgia Tech. It was a refreshing change of peace to finally have
some long awaited warmth and sunshine. It was great to be able to play outdoors
in nice weather (granted, we did move inside halfway through the Georgia Tech
match due to rain). The trip as a whole had its ups and downs, but was full of
memorable experiences none the less.

Leaving our dorms bright and early
at 6:30 a.m Friday morning, we left for BWI to travel to our first match
against Clemson. As always, we were kept entertained throughout the flight by
sitting next to Dasha (who by now I'm sure you guys are aware of her fear of
flying). Welma and I comforted her by explaining in detail the safety
procedures we should take in the event that we crashed. After arriving in
Clemson, we got a bite to eat at their famous Mellow Mushroom, or as I mistakenly
would call it, the Marvelous Shroom. Tomato, tomahto. As if I wasn't already
hungry enough, we had to wait for our food for a good hour and 15 minutes! Not
sure if they were growing the food in the back, or if it had something to do
with us being Terps from Maryland, but we have a feeling it was the latter. In
any case, the food was, as Welma would say, yumm-a! The rest of the day was
spent getting used to their courts, having a nice dinner, and resting up for
the following day.

I love the hotels we stay at
because they always have a great breakfast, one that I can go to any time I
want in the morning. So, me being me, I woke up extra early Saturday morning to
be able to enjoy a long relaxing breakfast. Unfortunately, we were not able to
pull a W against Clemson, losing 1-6. But we did win the doubles point! All three
of our doubles matches were awesome, and probably our best yet. So even though
we lost overall, we have some good matches to feed off of for the future. After
playing Clemson we headed even farther down South into Atlanta to play Georgia
Tech on Sunday, but of course not before making a stop at Dasha's (and now
Welma's) favorite, Pita Pit. For me though, the highlight of that meal was
watching on replay, the UConn women's basketball head coach going CRAZYY over a
call in the game against Maryland in the NCAAs.

On Sunday we suffered a
disappointing 0-4 loss to Georgia Tech. On the bright side, near the end of our
post match meeting I think we were finally able to make some headway and
progress in what we need to do for the future. So after showering and packing
up we headed off the airport to fly back home. The Super Shuttle drive back from
BWI was one for the books. The 45 minute drive from Baltimore was made short
with the team's sing along jam session. The entire ride, Olya, Welma, (and at times
Dasha and Maros), and I sang along and danced to different songs: Chicken Fried,
Don't Stop Believin' and Hey Mickey, to name a few. A thanks to Dasha, for videotaping
most of it, videos in which I've watched over 20 times since. It doesn't get
old. In fact, our singing was so pitch perfect that I was thinking we should
just ditch the whole tennis team thing, and start an a cappella group. But then
I was like eh, betta not. But in all seriousness, that was one of the most fun
experiences I've had this semester.

Overall, despite the losses, it was
a great trip and learning experience for us. We're now back at home, using this
week of practice in preparation for Miami and Florida State this weekend on our
home turf. Come support! GO TERPS!

In this week's Maryland Men's Lacrosse Blog we will preview this Friday's opponent Navy and give a little history lesson on the Maryland-Navy rivalry. We will also take a look at double-digit scorers and how this year's Terrapins stack up with recent teams through eight games.

Preview: Navy

The Mids enter Friday night's game with a 3-7 record and are coming off of a 12-7 loss at Lehigh on Saturday. After opening the season with back-to-back home wins over VMI and Detroit, Navy has gone 1-7 over its past eight games, but three of those losses were by just one goal and another was a two-goal loss.

The Navy offense is led by junior attackman Sam Jones, who has 17 goals and 10 assists on the season for 27 points. Sophomore midfielder Gabe Voumard is the only other Mid with double-digit goals with 12 tallies to go along with four assists.

Senior goalie Nolan Hickey has started all 10 games in cage for the Mids, but was lifted in the fourth quarter vs. the Mountain Hawks on Saturday for freshman John Connors. Seniors Austin Miller and Jay Christopher have started all 10 games at close defense, while junior Nik Mullen has started nine of 10 contests. Junior long pole Pat Kiernan leads the squad with 59 groundballs and 25 caused turnovers.

Navy has a pair of faceoff men in senior Evan McGoogan and freshman Sean Reilly who are winning better than 50 percent of their draws for the season.

A Brief Maryland-Navy Rivalry History Lesson

The Maryland-Navy rivalry is one of the oldest in college lacrosse and is the second-oldest rivalry in Maryland men's lacrosse history (both the Navy and Johns Hopkins rivalries officially started in 1924, but Maryland's squad played Hopkins seven times prior to becoming an officially sanctioned university sport).

Maryland topped the Midshipmen in that first meeting on April 12, 1924 by a final score of 5-3. The series then went away for two seasons before resuming in 1927 when Navy evened the series at 1-1 with a 6-2 win in Annapolis.

The two teams played each season until 1941 (The Terps were 10-2-1 vs. the Mids from 1928-40). The series resumed in 1943 with a 9-8 Navy win in Annapolis (12 of the first 16 meetings in the series were played in Annapolis). Maryland did not field a team during 1944 or 1945 due to World War II, but the two squads picked things up again in 1946 and have played every season since.

Despite the length of the series, Maryland and Navy have only met twice in a season four times and it was the Terps coming out on top in each of those second meetings. The Terps won in the NCAA tournament semifinals in 1971, 1976 and 1979 vs. the Mids. Then, of course, there is the 1975 NCAA championship game that saw Maryland claim its second NCAA title with a 20-13 win over the Mids at Homewood Field. Check out the highlight video below.

Friday's game will be the 88th in the series between Maryland and Navy. The Terps hold a 53-33-1 advantage in the series and have won the last three times these two squads have played. But, recent history is not all in the Terrapins favor. Prior to this three-game winning streak, Navy had won five of the previous six meetings (the lone Maryland win was the 8-7 overtime victory in 2007 which saw Ray Megill taking, winning and scoring off faceoffs, Drew Evans' last-second low-to-high whip-around shot to send the game into overtime and Dan Groot hitting the game-winner on a dodge down the left alley).

Seeing Double (Digits)

Maryland has played just eight games so far in 2013, but already six Terps have already reached double-digits in goals - Jay Carlson (15), Kevin Cooper (15), Owen Blye (12), Jake Bernhardt (12), John Haus (12) and Mike Chanenchuk (11).

Admittedly this is a limited sample size, but since 2005 the previous high for double-digit goal scorers through eight games was four and that occurred just last season. Take a look at the Terps who have scored 10 or more goals through eight games since 2005:

2013 [6]: Jay Carlson (15), Kevin Cooper (15), Owen Blye (12), Jake Bernhardt (12), John Haus (12) and Mike Chanenchuk (11)
2012 [4]: Joe Cummings (14), Michael Shakespeare (11), Jay Carlson (10) and Billy Gribbin (10)
2011 [3]: Grant Catalino (18), Joe Cummings (15) and Ryan Young (10)
2010 [2]: Grant Catalino (15), Will Yeatman (11)
2009 [3]: Grant Catalino (18), Ryan Young (12) and Dan Groot (12)
2008 [3]: Travis Reed (15), Grant Catalino (13) and Jeff Reynolds (11)
2007 [2]: Michael Phipps (16) and Max Ritz (12)
2006 [3]: Xander Ritz (20), Joe Walters (17) and Bill McGlone (10)
2005 [2]: Joe Walters (19) and Bill McGlone (16)

One thing that jumps out after looking at this list is that there are three midfielders already at 10 or more goals this season. Prior to this season, there were just five other full-time midfielders (although McGlone did it twice, so it could be counted as six) in the previous eight seasons combined.

The six 10-plus goal scorers already would tie or surpass the most double-digit goal scorers from six of the previous 13 seasons. There were six or fewer 10-plus goal scorers in 2008, 2006, 2005, 2003, 2002 and 2001. Last season had the most double-digit scorers since 2000 with nine.

This 2013 team is also the highest scoring team through eight games since 2005 with 107 goals (and its seven-game total of 98 goals was higher than any of the previous eight teams' eight-game totals). But, this year's squad doesn't come close to the 1973 NCAA title team, which put up a whopping 142 goals in its first eight games. That team is followed closely by the 1976 squad, which had 140 goals in its first eight games. The 1977, 1978 and 1979 teams each put up 135 goals. The 1975 championship team only scored 124 goals in its first eight games. The team of more recent vintage with the highest goal total in its first eight games would be the 1998 team, featuring the All-America attack trio of Matt Hahn, Scott Hochstadt and Andrew Whipple, with 126 goals.

Men's Lacrosse Alumni Reunion: One Week To Go

This was mentioned last week, but with only one more week before the big event it bears repeating.

Attention all Maryland men's lacrosse alums! The annual Alumni Reunion is coming up quickly. Prior to the Maryland-Johns Hopkins game on April 13 all Maryland men's lacrosse alums are invited to attend the Reunion Reception at 1 p.m. in the President's Suite in Tyser Tower. Keep an eye out for an email with the official invitation.

If you're not on our alumni email list (or your email has changed), it's not too late. Click here to have your email added to the list.

Wrapping Up

That'll do it for this week's Maryland men's lacrosse blog. We hope to see a lot of Terp fans make the short trip to Annapolis for Friday night's game. Fans are encouraged to get their tickets ahead of time. This is always a big game in Annapolis, so click here for all of the ticket information, including how to purchase your tickets online.

If you can't make it over to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium then check your cable or satellite package, because the game will be broadcast live on the CBS Sports Network with Dave Ryan and Evan Washburn on the call.

Of course, updates will also be going out on Twitter and Facebook, so "Follow" and "Like" to get all of the info sent to you wherever you are.

As always - Be The Best!

While other Maryland students were traveling in search of
warmer weather to enjoy spring break, we traveled to a snowy Providence to face
Brown University. In the days leading up to our match we worked hard in the gym
and on the court to get ready to face our Ivy League opponents.

We arrived in Providence around noon on Friday and headed
straight to Brown University to practice and get a feel for their courts. At
the end of practice the coaches played in so that everyone could play some
doubles points. After practices we checked into our hotel and had a couple of
hours to relax before dinner.

After dinner at Outback Steakhouse some of the girls came up
to our room and we watched a movie together. This weekend I got to room with
Tally and even though I would say I know my teammates pretty well, I always
seem to learn new things about them during this time.

We are allowed to go down for breakfast whenever we want to
since some of us prefer more time than others. I don't want to mention any
names, but Sarah is a bit of a slow eater. Needless to say she was at breakfast
before any of us got there.

Our match did not go as well as we had hoped. We started off
by winning the doubles point, but could not bring that momentum into singles. This
was a disappointing loss for us as a team and it shows us that there are still
a lot of things that we need to work on. The exciting part about all of this is
that this team has so much potential. We are still young and we are growing and
learning every day.

Even though we did not perform as well as we would have
liked to, this is another hurdle we have to overcome as a team. We will learn
from the mistakes we made against Brown and work hard to improve for our
matches against Georgia Tech and Clemson.

- Welma
