Mackenzie Dagostino is the latest Terp to join the Fresh Faces seriest. Dagostino was named to the 2011-12 Under Armour All-America second team and recipient of the prestigious Andi Collins award, which is given to the nation's top prep senior setter. The Tampa, Fla., native led Berkeley Prep to the Florida state championship the past three seasons.
Q: What about Maryland brought you to College Park?
Volleyball was definitely the first reason that brought me to College Park. But once I was here I really fell in love with the campus and what it had to offer; especially the journalism program and building!! Along those lines, the campus is so close to Washington D.C., which holds the headquarters for National Geographic, which is my dream job.
Q: You experienced tremendous success in high school winning three straight Florida state titles. Did winning your last title feel as good as winning your first or were they all different?
Winning my last title was a bitter sweet moment. It was the last match of that chapter of my life and going out the way we did was the perfect ending. Winning my first was definitely an exciting moment because the girls we won it with we're some of my closest friends, but our last win, was definitely the most memorable.
Q: You were awarded the prestigious Andi Collins Award this year, which is given to the nation's top senior setter. What did receiving that honor mean to you?
It was the most memorable moment of my life. Being able to carry on a name like Andi Collins is an outstanding honor. But beyond that I was honored to be able to represent my team, because without them I would not be the player I am today. I hope to carry on that honor and have this Terps team help shape me even more.
Q: What is a superstition of yours?
I have a bracelet that was given to me at a USA championship tournament by the Chinese captain. I REFUSE to take it off because since she gave it to me the teams that I have been associated with have won; so instead I tape over it. It's my little good luck charm.
Q: If you did not play volleyball, what sport would you play?
I would definitely play soccer! It's my favorite sport to watch and I used to play before I decided to dedicate my time to volleyball. But, if I could, I would play hockey, but I don't think I'm big enough.
Q: If a celebrity played you in a movie, who would it be and why?
Jenny Skavlan - I saw her in a movie once with my mom and she said she sounded just like me. We have the same style of clothing as well as an over-exaggerated, or, dramatic funny personality.
Q: What TV show are you embarrassed to admit that you watch?
None! I am not embarrassed to say any of them.
Q: What is something that most people do not know about you?
I love to sing! I know almost every song that comes on the radio and I am not afraid to belt it out.
Q: If you were stranded on a desert island and you could only have three things, what would they be?
I would need a compass to help me know my directions, matches so I could light a fire and someone else to keep me company!
