Maryland volleyball fans, we are only four days away from the season opener against Villanova. With that in mind, we continue the Fresh Faces series this week with Emily Fraik. Fraik was a 2012 OHSVCA Division II All-Ohio First Team member and was named to the 2011-12 Under Armour Honorable Mention All-America team.
Q: What attracted you to Maryland?
I loved the campus and the school. It has a great engineering program that is widely known. I also loved the volleyball team -- the coaches, the girls, and the atmosphere.
Q: You didn't grow up playing volleyball. Why did you decide to commit to volleyball full-time?
I didn't grow up around volleyball, but since I have started playing, it has been my passion and I look forward to every minute of it. I can't imagine my life without it.
Q: If you did not play volleyball, what sport would you play?
If I didn't play volleyball, then I would run cross country because it was my second favorite sport.
Q: You grew up in China and have lived in several countries. What will you remember most about your overseas' experiences?
My overseas experience gave me the opportunity to experience a variety of cultures and immerse myself in totally new environments. I look forward to traveling because I love the change of language and experiencing new cultures.
Q: You were actively involved in community service events in high school. What was your most memorable experience? Have you found any organizations in the D.C. area yet that you are interested in giving some time too?
I have not yet found something specific that I want to dive into here in the D.C. area because there are so many opportunities I would like to explore. The most memorable service work I did at home was with an organization called Su Casa which was for Hispanic immigrants and I helped a bilingual social worker with her work and loved it.
Q: What is something that most people do not know about you?
Something that most people do not know about me is that I am a huge fan of country music.
