The Terps held their fourth workout of the spring, and second in pads, at the team's practice facility.
"It was great to get back out here today," head coach Randy Edsall said after the two-hour session.
The first half of practice was devoted solely to individual work before breaking into team-centered activities.
"We're still installing," Edsall said. "We've had a pretty heavy install so far in the first four practices."
While he likes the energy, Edsall is looking for a reduction in the mental errors.
"You see enthusiasm out here. The guys are getting into it," Edsall said. "They're out here working and trying. I see improvement, but maybe not as fast as I'd like to in terms of fundamentals and technique. We're not playing as fast yet as I'd like to be, but it's not for lack of effort."
Maryland hadn't spent much time on special teams during the first three practices, but that changed Tuesday. The Terps spent time in the middle of practice on punt alignment under special-teams coordinator Andre Powell, who took those duties this spring.
With Nick Ferrara recovering from offseason hip surgery, Michael Tart and Nathan Renfro both took snaps at punter. Dexter McDougle and Levern Jacobs fielded the punts, though the Terps are a long way from settling on returners.
The Terps have stayed fairly healthy this spring, but they will be down another defensive lineman.
Ian Evans was ruled out for the remainder of the spring two weeks ago after injuring an abductor muscle and now Keith Bowers has been ruled out of the final four weeks.
"Keith experienced some heart palpitations before spring break," Edsall said. "Our medical staff had him checked out by a specialist and they felt right now it's best to monitor that. We don't anticipate any long-term issues."
The Terps will be back on the field on Thursday. For the rest of the spring they will practice each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The Red-White Spring game is set for Saturday, April 21 (1 p.m. kickoff).
