First Week of Practice in the Books

FB_Blog_Header.jpg The Maryland football team completed its first week of spring practice Thursday afternoon with a spirited workout at the Terps practice facility.

It marked the first padded practice of the spring campaign which began Saturday. The first two sessions were held in just helmets and shorts and featured individual drills, installation and non-contact team drills.

The tempo was a little more upbeat on Thursday, a workout that had team periods surrounding installation time as well as a goal-line scrimmage.

"We saw some guys getting after during the goal-line scrimmage [at the end of practice]," head coach Randy Edsall said after the two-hour session.

The team will now be off for 11 days for spring break.

"It gives us a chance to see where guys are," Edsall said of the time off during spring practice. "The biggest thing is do we have them in the right positions. Now we can hone in on putting guys at the spots where we think they can be the most successful for us."

Edsall was pleased with the team's attitude during the first week

"One thing I've been impressed with is the enthusiasm and the energy," Edsall said. "I see guys working harder to compete and to finish things. That's something that we have to build on each and every day."

But of course there is always room for improvement at this time of the year.

"The biggest thing that we have to do is we have to get better executing the fundamentals and the technique of what's being taught for the schemes that we're going to be playing," Edsall said. "That's the thing that's the most disappointing to me, I see guys in individual drills do it, but they're not carrying it over to the team drills. That's what we have to continue to work on."

There were also some turnovers on the first day in pads, though some of those miscues were due to solid plays by the defense.

"The other thing we have to do is eliminate drops by the wide receivers, and the ball was on the ground [Thursday] too many times by the running backs," Edsall. "I thought the defense did a good job of stripping the ball, so that's a positive."

There were also a limited number of injuries over the first three practices.

"All in all we came out of the first week healthy with the exception of Ian Evans," Edsall said.

Evans, who was listed as a backup at one of the defensive end positions on the initial spring depth chart, will be out for six weeks after straining an abductor muscle. He will not require surgery.

The Terps will be back on the field on Tuesday, March 27. They will practice each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday leading up to the Red-White Spring game on Saturday, April 21 (1 p.m. kickoff).
