NCAA Announces Qualifier Allocations

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
The Maryland wrestling team concluded the regular season last week and now is in postseason mode. While the Terps are busy prepping for the ACC Championships on March 3, the NCAA announced how many automatic qualifying spots will be up for grabs in Chapel Hill.

On Thursday, the NCAA released the automatic qualifier allocations for the 2012 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships (see table below).  The automatic qualifying spots identify the initial 29 participants in each of the 10 weight classes. The final 40 participants in this year's tournament will be selected by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee at the conclusion of the qualifying events.

Each qualifying tournament was awarded spots per weight class based on current year data. Each wrestler was measured on the following: Division I winning percentage, rating percentage index (RPI), and coaches ranking. The NCAA released the final coaches ranking Tuesday.

For each wrestler that reached the threshold in at least two of the three categories, his qualifying tournament was awarded a qualifying spot in that weight class. Every tournament with automatic qualifier status receives one qualifier at minimum regardless of how the wrestlers graded out in two of the three thresholds.

A couple of observations on the allocations:

  • The Big Ten cleaned up. After receiving 56 spots in 2010 and 64 spots in 2011, the conference grabbed an astounding 74 this year with 10 at 285 pounds, which is the most at all weight classes.
  • After receiving 20 qualifiers last season, the ACC was awarded 25 spots in 2012 which is the fourth highest total.
  • Half or more of the ACC Tournament participants will automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships at five of the weight classes (125, 133, 141, 157, 165). Conversely, the action in the other five weight classes will be intense as the wrestlers will need to reach the finals (149, 174, 184) or win the conference title (197, 285) in order to automatically book their spot in St. Louis.

As I mentioned, the NCAA determines the allocation of qualifying spots based on Division I winning percentage, rating percentage index (RPI), and coaches ranking.  Let's take a look at where Maryland's projected starters for the ACC Championships rank in the RPI and coaches ranking.

The coaches ranking and RPI only rank the top-33 wrestlers at each weight class. Winning percentage has not been officially announced and will adjust following the conference tournaments along with the RPI.
