Maryland has a slight edge over Virginia, 21-20, at halftime. It's the second straight close game for the Terrapins heading into the break - they took a 17-15 lead into the locker room at Miami last week. All three of Maryland's touchdowns have come on the ground, and all three from freshmen. Quarterback Danny O'Brien has one and running back D.J. Adams has two.
Chris Hinkebein booted a 52-yard field goal for the Cavaliers as time expired in the second quarter to bring Virginia within a single point.
Notes:
Offensive Start: The game so far has been an offense-dominated affair, with Virginia totaling 252 yards of total offense and Maryland totaling 235. The Cavaliers have run 44 plays to Maryland's 33.
Adams TDs: D.J. Adams scored on a six-yard run for Maryland's first touchdown and later scored from one yard out, giving him his fourth and fifth rushing TDs of the season, which is the most on the team. It is the second multiple-TD game of the freshman's career (also two vs. Morgan State, 9/11/10). Adams has a team-high seven rushes for 23 yards.
Make it Six: Torrey Smith had over 100 yards receiving with 12 minutes left in second quarter. It was his sixth 100-yard receiving game, which is tied for the fourth most in Maryland history (also Vernon Davis).
More Smith: Torrey Smith had 138 all-purpose yards in the first half (101 receiving, 37 kickoff returns) and now ranks in the top 20 on the ACC career list. The junior has 4,688 all-purpose yards in his career which is 19th on the ACC career chart.
Run, Pass and Catch: Danny O'Brien ran for a 12-yard TD early in the second quarter, the first rushing TD of his career. The freshman has thrown, caught and run for a TD this season.
Big Plays: The Terps had two plays over 50 yards in the first half: a 62-yard pass from Danny O'Brien to Torrey Smith and a 55-yard pass from O'Brien to McCree. Maryland, which had just eight plays of 50 yards or longer in 2009, now has 16 this season.
Tidbits: Quintin McCree's 55-yard reception was the longest of his career ... Alex Wujciak has a team-high six tackles ... both teams are 3-for-3 scoring in the red zone (Maryland three TDs; Virginia two TDs and one FG) ... both teams have gone for it twice on fourth down and converted each time ... Travis Baltz averaged 48.7 yards per punt on three punts.
