Terps Scale Back During the Bye Week

FB_Blog_Header.jpgBye week generally means healing and fine-tuning, and that's exactly what the Terps are doing this week.

Head coach Ralph Friedgen has reduced the practice schedule, though the team hit the field Wednesday and will do so again Thursday afternoon. After that, the team will be off until Monday's practice.

Despite the layoff since Saturday's Duke game, the Terps came out with a lot of enthusiasm Wednesday.

"I was pleased with (Wednesday's) practice for the most part," Friedgen said. "If anything I had to tame it down, which I very rarely do. They were flying around pretty good."

Practice News and Notes:

- TE Dave Stinebaugh will not need an operation on his injured knee (MCL and PCL), but is expected to be out of action up to six weeks.

- TE Will Yeatman had the cast removed from his hand, which was helping protect his fractured finger. That should help become him become more involved in the offense in the coming weeks. "He played a little better last week," Friedgen said. "He did some good things on special teams."

- TE Devonte Campbell is still working his way back into playing form since injuring his knee and shoulder. Campbell has yet to see action this season. He was available to play Saturday, though held back. Friedgen thought he looked good during Wednesday's practice.

- A number of players will be limited during the bye week, including WR Torrey Smith, LB Alex Wujciak and LB Adrian Moten, in order to keep them fresh for the stretch run which includes four road games over the next five contests.

- QB Jamarr Robinson took part in his first full practice since injuring his shoulder vs. West Virginia. "Jamarr looked good (Wednesday)," Friedgen said. "He threw the ball well. He looked like he was 100 percent, so that was a good sign."

- Freshmen David Mackall and Desmond Kearse, who each missed the Duke game with injuries, should return vs. Clemson (10/16).

Other Friedgen quotes from Wednesday's post-practice media session:

On the kicking game:
"Travis (Baltz) gets in the first time and gets an extra point partially blocked. It still went through the uprights but it was partially blocked. So I put (Nick) Ferrara in. Ferrara kicks the first one from the 5-yard line, the second from the 12-yard line, but he misses. So I put Baltz back in and he made every one from thereon. It's kind of make-it take-it.

"I'd really like (Ferrara) to come out and be consistent, because I don't know how much that's affected Travis and his punting. But you have to come out and win the job, you have to come out and do it. There's no question he has a strong leg.

"Until I'm convinced that Ferrara is pretty consistent we're going to stay with the other guy. He's only missed one."

On the team's unselfishness:
"I'm very pleased with our wide receivers and their contributions on special teams. I really feel like I don't have a lot of selfish guys right now they're all wanting us to do well and not sulking if they don't get the ball. I made a comment to Adrian (Cannon), Torrey (Smith) caught the big pass and he was jumping up in the air and really excited. I mentioned that to him and he just said 'Coach I want to win. I don't really care about anything else.' That's good about our team right now."
