The Maryland Terrapins held their second practice of the preseason on Wednesday morning at the team's on-campus facility. The workout was slated to take place in the evening, but head coach Ralph Friedgen decided to move the start time due to extreme heat.
"We had a couple guys cramp up today," Friedgen said. "We had a couple guys cramp up yesterday. They practiced in it (the heat) to their credit. The kids kind of expressed to me they liked practicing in the morning. They're trying to talk me into that, but we'll see how they practiced today (after watching the film). I think they practiced OK. It's hard to tell without pads on."
Friedgen got a chance to watch the film of Tuesday's first practice.
"Yesterday's practice was ok," Friedgen said. "We were further along mentally than I thought we would be. When you put the pads on you can tell a little bit where you are with the line situation."
Friedgen singled out some of the non-starters on the defensive side of the ball who made contributions in Tuesday's practice:
The offense also had some solid contributors.
Friedgen thought wide receivers Adrian Cannon and Torrey Smith "had good days" and that Ronnie Tyler is "looking very good."
QB C.J. Brown, who entered the preseason third on the depth chart, has also been impressive through the first two days of camp.
"I think he's much better than he was in the spring," Friedgen said. "He seems to have a better understanding. He seems to be making better decisions and throwing the ball better. I'm encouraged by that."
Freshmen Devin Burns and Tyler Smith are behind Brown.
"I think Devin Burns has made some strides," Friedgen said. "I don't think he's quite there yet. Tyler is kind of lost, but that's expected."
The Terps will be back on the field Thursday evening for their third practice of the preseason.
Practice Tidbits: The Terps spent nearly half of Wednesday's practice in team drills. The second and third-team offenses were able to make several plays against the second and third-team defenses. In 9-on-11, both Danny O'Brien and C.J. Brown were able to complete several passes despite being down two players. Both freshmen went 3 of 4 during the drill. Brown hit Adrian Cannon streaking across the field for a long play, while his only incompletion came on a deep pall that just missed the outstretched hand of Tony Logan ... In 11-on-11 the first-team defense dominated, not allowing the pass-offense to get much of anything going ... Da'Rel Scott was able to break off several long runs, showing great explosiveness through the line of scrimmage.

Friedgen singled out some of the non-starters on the defensive side of the ball who made contributions in Tuesday's practice:
- Travis Hawkins - "He made a hell of a play. Very similar to the play he made in the spring game. He has good range. Maybe as good as anyone we have."
- Avery Graham - "He did a couple good things."
- Trenton Hughes - "He played very solid yesterday."
- Joe Vellano - "Still looking good."
- A.J. Francis - "He's running better than he's run.
