Terps Hit Field for First of Two Friday Workouts

FB_Blog_Header.jpg The weekend may be here for some, but it's all business for the Maryland football team on Friday.

The Terps hit the field for a 90-minute workout in the morning and will return to the on-campus practice field this evening for another session.

At his post-practice briefing with the media, Friedgen discussed the flexibility some players have with their roles, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

Sophomore Justin Anderson is expected to play both anchor and defensive tackle this season. Anderson played tackle as a true freshman last season and impressed the staff with his strength and athleticism.

"Obviously, how much he goes inside will be based on how much Isaiah Ross, Carl Russell or Ian Evans comes along," Friedgen said. "If someone from that group comes along to be a consistent player, that will allow us to move Justin inside."

Ryan Donohue is the No. 2 Mike linebacker right now, but he can also play the Will position where the Terps with be without the services of Ben Pooler who injured his knee.

Donohue did a good job the last two days handling the assignments at Will linebacker.

"He's going to be very much like Justin Anderson, he's going to have to be flexible to play both (positions)," Friedgen said of Donohue.

Bradley Johnson
, a redshirt freshman who was moved from outside linebacker to defensive end in the spring, is also an option. He could play some at Will LB, as well as end.

After this evening's practice, the Terps are off until Saturday evening when they will hold their second scrimmage of the preseason.

"It's going to be a tough scrimmage offensively," Friedgen said. "I'm going to let (defensive coordinator) Don (Brown) run all his stuff."

Two-Minute Drill: The Terps end a number of their practices with the two-minute drill and they did so in Friday morning's session with the defense holding off the offense in its two opportunities. On the first possession, the offense received the ball at its own 25-yard line with 50 seconds on the clock, no timeouts and a touchdown required. Jamarr Robinson moved the No. 1 offense into scoring range against the No. 1 defense with a pair of nifty completions. The junior hit Kevin Dorsey for 20 yards on a third-and-12 play and connected with Torrey Smith on a 30-yard completion with 8 seconds left after the scrambling out of the pocket. However, the defense stiffened on the final two plays with the ball inside the 10-yard line. Danny O'Brien directed the second unit with some success as well. The redshirt freshman connected with Dave Stinebaugh, who has seen extended time with injuries to the tight end unit, on a pair of completion to move the ball inside the 25-yard line of the defense, but the offense was unable to move the ball further as a sack and pair of incompletions thwarted the drive.
