Maryland rebounded from a somewhat sluggish Friday practice with a more spirited two-hour workout Saturday evening, the first in pads in the preseason.
The Terps practiced for an hour at the on-campus fields before moving to Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium where the squad was greeted by season-ticket holders who were invited to the last half of the workout.
The session capped off the first week of the preseason for the Terps who are just a little over three weeks away from the season opener against Navy (4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 6 vs. in Baltimore).
"Overall I think we've had a good first week," head coach Ralph Friedgen said. "They seemed a little tired today, a little lethargic. But we got out of it what we wanted to get out of it."
The defense was sharp for the most part, but the offense also hit on a number of big plays during the team portion of Saturday's practice which ended with a physical goal-line scrimmage.
"I think typically the defense is ahead the first day in pads," Friedgen said. "I wasn't disappointed with the offense. They had a couple big plays but a couple penalties took the drive back. We have to eliminate that."
One of the deeper positions on the team is wideout which features Torrey Smith, recently named to the Biletnikoff Award watch list, given to the top receiver in the nation.
All seven of the wide receivers who caught a pass last year are back.
"There's no question (we're deeper at wide receiver)," Friedgen said. "(Adrian) Cannon made a few plays (tonight). Torrey (Smith) made a play. Tony Logan made a play. We just didn't do very well on third down. The first-team offense versus the second-team defense had a couple of third-and-4s and we didn't make them."
The Terps worked about 20 plays in the goal-line setting. While Friedgen said he thought the defense performed well in the sets, the offense was able to score four times in four tries from the 5-yard line.
Davin Meggett, who was praised after practice by Friedgen for his improvement in the off-season, scored two of the TDs - one from 5 yards out on a pitch play and one from 2 yards away on fourth down.
Redshirt freshman tight end Dave Stinebaugh, who is likely to see more action with and Lansford Watson sidelined, made two touchdown catches - one from Danny O'Brien and one from C.J. Brown, on play-action.
After Saturday's workout a number of the players signed autographs for the kids in attendance, and Friedgen and interim director of athletics Randy Eaton held a Q&A session with the season-ticket holders.
The Terps take Sunday off and hold their first two-a-day session Monday, with a scrimmage set for the evening workout.
