The Terps hit the field for a single practice on a hot and muggy Thursday evening following the second two-a-day of preseason camp.
Head coach Ralph Friedgen and the Terps received some bad news before hitting the field for a two-hour practice when they learned that reserve linebacker Ben Pooler is likely done for the season with a knee injury
.
The injury to the junior hurts the depth at that position, although all three starters - Alex Wujciak, Adrian Moten and Demetrius Hartsfield - are back.
Despite the loss of a key performer, the defense has been sharp the last few days. That unit ended off Saturday's scrimmage on a solid note (allowing just one field goal in the final six drives) and has carried the momentum through the last two practices.
"The defense has been playing pretty good the last two days and they've been fired up," Friedgen said. "So we'll see what happens Saturday (in team's second scrimmage of the preseason). They've been flying around the ball pretty good. The offense has been struggling a little bit."
The defense wasn't feeling the heat Thursday even though temperatures were in the upper 80s with high humidity.
"It was a tough practice," Friedgen said. "I pushed them pretty good today."
The Terps will hold their third of five preseason two-a-days on Friday, with the team working out once in the morning and again in the evening.
Practice Notes: Friedgen indicated after practice that tight end Will Yeatman (broken finger) hopes to return for the West Virginia game (Sept. 18) ... the Terps are being cautious with Cameron Chism, who has been out of action with a hamstring injury, though the setback does not appear serious and he should return later in camp ... Friedgen thinks third-string quarterback C.J. Brown may have "closed (the gap) a little bit" on backup Danny O'Brien, though would like both to be more consistent.
