Terps Hit Field Tuesday After Three Days Off

After three days away from the football field, the Terps went back to work on Tuesday afternoon.

The team has not been on the field since it scrimmaged on Friday in the stadium. The down time gave the coaching staff a chance to review the film.

Quarterback play is always at the forefront of any film breakdown and Jamarr Robinson and Danny O'Brien, the top two signal-callers, distinguished themselves well in the post-scrimmage dissection.

Robinson completed nearly 70 percent of his passes (15 of 22) for 148 yards and O'Brien was 12-for-19 for 115 yards.

"I was encouraged," head coach Ralph Friedgen said after Tuesday's two-hour workout. "I thought the quarterbacks improved. I thought we made quicker and faster decisions."

Robinson directed two of the three touchdown drives in the scrimmage.

"Jamarr didn't have a good day today but to me I thought he had some balls that were dropped (in the scrimmage)," Friedgen said. "He could have had a couple big plays that he just missed, but other than that I thought he played really well."

O'Brien led two long drives, one of which ended with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Ronnie Tyler.

"Danny got in with the second-team offense against the first-team defense and put together about a 65-yard drive (one which did not result in a touchdown)," Friedgen said. "He made some big third-down plays so I was impressed there."

Friedgen also saw improvement in the play of the offensive line.

"With all the stuff [defensive coordinator] Don [Brown] is throwing at them - I think we had two sacks in 118 plays - that's quite a big improvement right there, especially against all the blitzes they're seeing," Friedgen said. Three running backs gained over 40 yards in the scrimmage.

Caleb Porzel had a scrimmage-best 71 yards on nine carries, D.J. Adams posted 70 on 10 totes and Da'Rel Scott had a 42-yard TD run.

"D.J. Adams had a big scrimmage," Friedgen said. "He helped himself in the running game. He still has to get better in pass protection. But he rushed for 70 yards on 10 carries against the first and second-team defense."

The Terps will practice Thursday afternoon and hold their second spring scrimmage on Saturday morning.

Practice Notes:

  • The Terps ended Tuesday's practice with the two-minute drill. The defense stopped the offense on both attempts. Jamarr Robinson kept the No. 1 offense moving with a pair of first downs. He connected with Quintin McCree on a 17-yard, fourth-down heave, but three plays laterAntwine Perez intercepted a pass. The second-team offense was unable to gain a first down as Davin Meggett was stuffed on fourth-and-2 attempt.

  • After Tuesday's practice Friedgen singled out a few defensive players who have been productive this spring. "The guy that's playing pretty well for us right now is Drew Gloster. He was 1-of-6 at the scrimmage (on production plays). I think we'll be more athletic at defensive end. With Derek Drummond, Gloster and Bradley Johnson, they're all pretty quick guys."
