"There was some good and bad," head coach Ralph Friedgen said. "Some of the redshirt freshmen were a little tentative but they got better as it went along. They need a lot more scrimmaging."
Jamarr Robinson and Danny O'Brien took the majority of the reps under center.
The defense stopped the offense on the first four possessions before Nick Ferrara hit a 43-yard field goal to cap a 48-yard drive led by Robinson. The junior went 3-for-5, including a key third-down completion to Adrian Cannon in the possession. He also had an 8-yard scramble.
O'Brien led the only touchdown drive in the portion of the scrimmage which had possessions beginning at the offense's 40-yard line.
Webb Dulin and Paul Lariviere had key plays in the 10-play, 60-yard TD drive. O'Brien hit Dulin for 29 yards on third-and-4 and connected with Lariviere for 6 yards on fourth-and-2.
Andrew Braxton went the final 11 yards on three straight runs, capped by a 4-yard plunge.
The defense made key plays to stop drives.
Drew Gloster broke up a Robinson pass on third-and-11 and De'Onte Arnett sacked O'Brien on third-and-6.
Adrian Moten stopped one offensive possession with three straight stops. He tackled Morgan Green on consecutive runs before tripping up LaQuan Willliams well before the marker on third-and-11.
The Terps also worked on third-down plays, field goals and goal-line, but there was no punting or returns.
"I thought the offense was ahead on third down," Friedgen said after the practice.
The offense was successful on 8 of the 14 third-down attempts.
Robinson was 3-for-3 in third-down situations and O'Brien threw for a first down and scrambled for another. Davin Meggett rushed for 4 yards on third-and-1 and Da'Rel Scott broke loose for a 15 yards on a draw on third-and-7.
"For a first scrimmage-type setting it was pretty good," Friedgen. "The next three weeks are going to be real important."
The Terps are off until Tuesday afternoon.
