The Terps finished their second week of spring practice on Saturday and will kick it back into gear on Tuesday.

The team will also work out on Thursday and hold its first scrimmage of the spring on Friday.

Head coach Ralph Friedgen likes the direction of the team so far this spring.

"I think we're having a pretty good spring," Friedgen said. "I like our attitude and our work ethic."

With the exception of a knee injury to Taylor Watson, the Terps have also remained fairly healthy through the first two weeks.

Here are some news and notes from the second week of spring practice:

  • Torrey Smith, Adrian Cannon and Ronnie Tyler are each listed No. 1 at the three receiver spots, but the Terps also have depth there. Friedgen likes the competition at a position which has nine scholarship players, but just three are seniors. "Kevin Dorsey and Quintin McCree are better,' Friedgen said after Thursday's practice. "Tony Logan has had a good spring so far. Those three guys are pushing for starting positions right now."

  • The Terps have their top returners back, including a record-setting all-league performer, but they would like to improve in that department. Torrey Smith, a 2009 second-team All-ACC specialist, and Tony Logan are No. 1 at kickoff and punt return, respectively. Smith set the Maryland single-season and career kickoff return yard marks last season, but Friedgen wants more in the return game. "The area I really want to see us get better at is kickoff returns," Friedgen said. "I think [Tony] Logan has a chance to be a good punt returner but we have to get to where there isn't somebody in his face every time he's trying to catch it. We have to do a better job on the perimeter." Smith is also getting a look as a punt returner. He's been catching punts, as has Dexter McDougle, behind Logan.

  • Both kickers and the snapper are also back in the fold for Maryland. Travis Baltz, a three-year starter at punter, second year place-kicker Nick Ferrara and long-snapper Tim Downs return. Baltz appears to be his steady self this spring and Ferrara is 'kicking and punting the ball pretty well' according to Friedgen.
