Senior Jake Pace scored two goals to give the No. 8 Maryland men’s soccer team a dominant 2-0 win over ACC newcomer Pittsburgh at Ludwig Field Friday night.

The Terrapins (3-2-3, 3-0-1 ACC) held a 23-2 advantage in shots over the Panthers (0-4-2, 0-4-0 ACC), and controlled play for the majority of the contest. The offensive firepower was backed up by a standout defensive effort with the Terps recording their first shutout of the season.

Senior Patrick Mullins recorded the first of his team high 11 shots on a free kick just three minutes into the match. That opportunity would start a trend for the Terps, who had numerous chances to score the opening goal in the first half.

The best attempt came from Pace, who headed the ball over the bar from close range with 10 minutes remaining in the half.

The second half started much like the first, with Mullins’ 5-yard shot parried by Pitt keeper Dan Lynd. Moments later, the left post denied the reigning MAC Hermann trophy winner, who ripped a shot from just outside the box.

Pace put the Terps on top in the 68th minute. Mikey Ambrose served in a ball that found the senior, who would chip the keeper for his fourth goal of the season.

The ever-active Mullins played a part in the Terps’ second tally. The senior sent in a dangerous free kick that Pace headed straight into Lynd. Pace recovered and slotted home the rebound to put the Terrapins ahead for good.

“We played a great game tonight. We were great from the first minute to the last minute,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said.  “I’m very pleased with our response from Tuesday. We came out with a lot of energy, a lot of purpose and a lot of skill. It was a very complete game and I’m happy with the overall performance.”

The Terps return to action next Tuesday against No. 15 Tulsa. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Ludwig Field.
