As a UMD student-athlete, you are required to abide by a number of standards set by the NCAA, ACC, and the UMD. The Student-Athlete Handbook highlights some of these guidelines. However, it is the responsibility of the student-athlete to become familiar with all applicable guidelines.

At the initial team meeting prior to each season of competition, the Office of Compliance presents general departmental policies, NCAA athletic eligibility standards and requires appropriate personal information from each student-athlete. The Academic Support and Career Development unit reviews NCAA academic eligibility requirements, institutional requirements and provides an overview of services offered by the unit. The Sports Medicine Staff presents information relevant to training room operation, medical details, physical examinations, and rehabilitation procedures. The Health Center presents relevant information to the University's drug testing program for student-athletes.

1. Student-athletes are allowed 4 seasons of eligibility within 5 calendar years from the time they first enroll full-time in a collegiate institution. When they participate in any competition in their sport (including a scrimmage with outside competition), whether it is for one minute or an entire contest, they have used a season of competition and one of their four years of eligibility.

2. Student-athletes must be enrolled fulltime, that is, carry a minimum of 12 credit hours each semester to be eligible to practice or compete with their team. If a student-athlete drops below 12 hours he/she will immediately be ineligible to practice or compete, and his/her athletics grant-in-aid will be revoked unless otherwise approved by the Department of Athletics. Graduating seniors who need less than 12 credit hours to complete degree requirements may receive an exception to enroll in less than 12 credit hours by requesting their home college to complete a "Less Than 12 Credit Hour" application.

If you choose to take summer courses at another institution, or at another campus of the University of Maryland system, permission from the Dean of your college is required before you take the course. To obtain approval for a course to be taken elsewhere, you must complete a Permission to Enroll at Another Institution form available in your college advisor's office. The Permission to Enroll form must be completed before you take the course and you must bring a copy of the form to the Academic Support and Career Development Unit.

DON'T FORGET TO BRING A COPY OF YOUR PERMISSION TO ENROLL FORM TO YOUR ACADEMIC SUPPORT AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT COUNSELOR.

REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN NOT RAISE YOUR GPA THROUGH TRANSFER CREDITS, YOU CAN ONLY RAISE YOUR CUMULATIVE CREDIT TOTAL.
