GREENVILLE, N.C. -
Juliet Vongphoumy claimed the individual title with a 4-under 68 to propel Maryland to a team title at the rain-shortened Lady Pirate Intercollegiate.
Final round action of the tournament was cancelled due to unplayable conditions. The two-day, 54-hole event, which was being played at the par-72, 6,004-yard Greenville Country Club, was reduced to an 18-hole tournament after torrential rain Monday afternoon that caused the cancellation of the final 36-holes.
Vongphoumy finished two strokes ahead of Boston College's Cristina McQuiston (70) and three strokes ahead of UNC Wilmington's Lori Beth Adams (71). Eight golfers finished tied for fourth at even par and were named to the all-tournament squad (top five finishers including ties). A year ago, Vongphoumy finished in a tie four-way tie for second place at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate.
Maryland claimed the 2012 team title for the third consecutive year with a 7-over par 295. The Terrapins and UNC Wilmington were tied after 18 holes, but due to the fifth player tie breaker rule, Jessica Gregory's 11-over 83 won out for Maryland over Danielle Lamy's 16-over 88. Old Dominion (301) finished third, followed by Elon (302), while No. 33 Coastal Carolina and Southern Miss finished in a tie for fifth at 303. Host East Carolina finished 10 strokes behind the leaders at 17-over (305).
The Terrapins become just the second school during the 12 year history of he event to win three-straight team titles following the Pirates from 2000-02).
Emily Gimpel shot a 1-over 73 for the Terps, followed by Christine Shimel with a 4-over 76 and Heidi Baek with a 6-over 78.
