KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Christine Shimel shot a final-round, 2-under par 70 to finish tied for second at the Palmetto Intercollegiate.
Shimel shot a 1-over par 217 (74-73-70) for the 54-hole tournament to finish behind individual champion Maria Jose Benavides of Campbell, who shot a 3-under 213. That vaulted Maryland to a tie for fourth in the team standings.
Shimel's weekend improved upon a season scoring average of 73.5 that led the team and tied for fourth in the ACC heading into the tournament.
"I think it was a strong fall season for the women's team," said director of intercollegiate golf Jason Rodenhaver. "Christine Shimel played great this weekend and had a great fall. She was certainly the most consistent player throughout the season. A tie for fourth is a good finish for us."
Juliet Vongphoumy also finished in the top 20, shooting a 7-over 223 (72-72-79) to finish in a tie for 18th. Heidi Baek recorded her second top 30 finish of the season with a 9-over 225 (76-73-76).
"Again we're looking for more production from our back end, but the future is bright for us to achieve our goals at the end of the season," said Rodenhaver. "Heidi had her best tournament so far. It was good to see her play well. She's capable of being a great player for us."
Campbell won the team title with a 3-over 866, followed by East Tennessee State (887), Coastal Carolina (891), and Maryland, Michigan and Elson at 894.
