COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Alex Aust and Kristen Lamon scored four goals each as the No. 1 Maryland women's lacrosse team defeated Hofstra 16-11 Sunday afternoon.
Maryland (5-0, 2-0 ACC) had seven different goal scorers on the day. With four goals and five assists against Hofstra (4-1) and a career-high 10 points in a win at Virginia Friday, Aust has totaled 19 points in the last two games. Taylor Cummings added a hat trick and Brooke Griffin recorded two goals and two assists.
The Terps tallied the first three goals of the game with Aust playing a hand in all three after assisting Katie Schwarzmann for the opener and scoring the next two. Hofstra got on the board at 24:54 before Lamon pushed the lead back to three with the first of her four goals.
Hofstra picked up two goals within a 38-second period around the 23-minute mark to shrink the lead to 4-3 but the Terps outscored the Pride 4-1 - including two scores from Aust - to close the first period and boast an 8-4 advantage heading into the half.
Maryland, which utilized its bench heavily in the second stanza, broke the game open with a 6-2 scoring advantage in the first 15 minutes of the half. Griffin and Lamon both scored two goals to lead the Terps in the stretch. Hofstra tallied three goals in the final 5:49 to cap the scoring at 16-11.
Kasey Howard was strong in the cage, registering 12 saves. Megan Douty recorded four ground balls, three caused turnovers, and three draw controls to lead the Terps defensively.
"Hofstra came out hard...I give their team a lot of credit for stepping on the field and never backing down," head coach Cathy Reese said. "For us defensively, we just need to help each other a little more. We were a little slow on our slides and that hurt us initially with the goals they were scoring. We've got a couple things we need to make some changes on moving forward and that is what we'll plan on doing this week."
Maryland has another quick turnaround as it faces UMBC Tuesday night for its last of three games in a five-day span.
