COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Postgame quotes following Maryland's 64-59 victory over Boston College Tuesday night.
Head Coach Mark Turgeon
"I am really proud of my team. We have had an unbelievably tough stretch. We went Sunday at Miami, Wednesday with an emotional game [North Carolina State], noon on Saturday [North Carolina] and then Tuesday. We played two teams that had byes going into, North Carolina and Boston College. We gutted it out. We had to play a small lineup to defend them. They are really hard to guard. We don't practice the small lineup enough, we will going forward. We figured out a way to win. We were hanging our heads at halftime. I said guys Boston College is really good, they had Miami beat and North Carolina State beat and let it slip away from them. They could have very easily been 3-1 in our league. We have to figure out a way to win the game by one, just win this sucker by one tonight and we won by five. It was a good win."
On Dez Wells handling the ball:
"I was trying to figure it out. I wanted to play Nick [Faust], he has been playing well but he was having trouble handling it tonight. Pe'Shon [Howard] isn't the treat coming off ball screens. Seth [Allen] didn't have one of his particularly good games. We went with Dez [Wells] and he had eight assists, seven in the second half and made plays for people. The biggest play was we were down by three and he got Logan [Aronhalt] a wide open shoot in the corner that was a big shot for us. We put the ball in Dez's hands we went from down three to up eight when the ball was in his hands. That's where we are right now. The small lineup I was really happy with. Jake Layman played great. I am superstitious, that's why Jake started. He played well against Virginia Tech and we won that game so that's why he started it helped us. It was a good win. Nick made some big plays for us down the stretch, hit the big three in the corner, he had the steal, strip and the two free throws. I know he dribbled out of bounds, he is frustrated about that but he made three really big plays for us down the stretch."
On Jake Layman:
"He was excited to play against Boston College. I think he is more comfortable [starting] and I know that I am more comfortable with him. It gives us a shooter and an athlete. The kid is going to be a really good player. It was great to see him play with confidence. He was really good defensively, I couldn't even get him on the court earlier in the year he was so bad defensively. He was really good defensively and that's why he was able to stay out there."
On the defense down the stretch:
"We are getting used to it. We really defended and had good defenders on the floor. Guys believe in each other. Take away the two no box outs and we really guarded in that stretch. It was really hard for them to get a shot. Our guys believe in their defense and pretty soon we are going to be believing in our offense. We are getting better. 64 [points] tonight and shooting 42 percent feels like 80 percent compared to the way we have been shooting."
Freshman Forward Jake Layman On Maryland's close wins:
"We're still feeling different lineups out and stuff. It's still a process for us, but we're getting there."
On Dez Wells:
"I don't think he was focused on being the one scorer that he usually is for us. He was focusing on dishing the ball and he did a great job with it. He got us the win."
On rebounding from the UNC loss:
"We knew we had to come out and play much better than we did in the first half at [North] Carolina. We came out with a good win."
Senior Guard Logan Aronhalt On Dez Wells at point guard:
"We didn't really practice it that much, maybe five or six possessions. But that play is something we've been working on, just the high ball screen. Just to get another look on our offense since that's what we've been struggling with. I think he just brings aggressiveness, and he can really get to the rim and finish, and make free throws. Having the ball in his hands, coming off the ball screen, is a really good look for us."
On Maryland's offense:
"Our offense, it's no secret that it's been struggling. Tonight it wasn't great, but it was better. We actually made a couple shots, which was encouraging."
On the importance of the win:
"Every game for us now is a big game. I don't think there's any bad team in the league, and we know every night, with how we're playing on offense right now, they're going to be close. They're going to be battles. Every game for us from here on out is going to be a battle, and we're going to have to play well to win."
Sophomore Center Alex Len On the defense:
"I think we did a great job. They shot only 35 percent so we did a great job."
On Dez Wells running the point:
"He did a great job. He had like eight assists. He was bringing the ball really hard so it helped us."
On Dez Wells:
"He can play four positions, from point guard to position four. He can do everything, you know. It's pretty good to have him."
Boston College Coach Steve Donahue
"Late in the second half they made shots. I thought we looked tired at that point of defense. I thought we guarded up until that point fairly well, but during that stretch they did a very good job. They got shots, they made them, and unfortunately I thought we lost our intensity at that point."
On dealing with close games:
"I just told the guys that if they miss a foul shot there it's a one point game. You know what, it's not like Maryland didn't deserve to win and we deserved to win. We didn't play well enough to beat them on the road. Obviously, foul shooting is our Achilles heel right now, but the defensive side of the ball; we're grinding it out a little more."
On their poor start from three point range: "It wasn't a good sign. Obviously what we do is predicated on making threes, and I thought we got wide open shots. The other thing is that they made shots that they hadn't been making, and that's a credit to them. We had shots, but we didn't take advantage of them especially early. After that stretch, I thought we were pretty good from three."
On defending Alex Len:
"He's a handful there's no doubt. I thought we did a good job of disrupting him. We got a couple charges and we got loose balls. He's a talented kid. He took 14 shots to get 16 points, so that's a pretty good job."
On how Maryland depth affected them:
"I think their ability to go deep helps them for sure... I thought they were fresher at the end."
Boston College Sophomore Forward Ryan Anderson
On another close loss:
"It is always tough to take when you take a loss. We just worked so hard in the offseason and we know we are better than this. The two freshmen add a lot to our team. We just have to find a way to finish games. There are a lot of little things we need to work on in the second half. They scored six straight times. It is the little things that are going to help us win these close games."
On keeping up the intensity for the whole game:
"We talked about that in the locker room. We do not play as many guys as other ACC teams, so we really have to be on the same stream when we are out there on the floor. We play a lot of minutes together. We have to be on the same page, especially defensively."
On starting the game 0-8 from the three point line as a team:
"I am confident in all of our shooters on the team. Anytime we start off slow and we are still in the game it is a positive. We got some good looks. They made some big shots down the stretch. We could not get stops for those six straight possessions."
On guarding Maryland Sophomore Forward Alex Len:
"He is a talented player. To have that size, skill, and be that athletic is a tough cover. That is why he is going to the next level. He was a very physical player. I thought we had success when we got him moving."
On losing close games on the road:
"Anytime you are in the game on the road it is a positive. You want to be in the game down the stretch and then make enough plays to win the game. I think last year we had longer stretches of time where we play bad basketball. This year it is just one or two possessions where we are playing bad basketball. If we cut out those bad possessions, especially at the end of the game, we will come out with a win."
