COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Postgame Quotes following Maryland's 86-60 victory over Wake Forest Saturday afternoon.
Maryland Head Coach Mark Turgeon
"That was fun; we needed that and needed a win. I am proud of our guys. We talked about playing with energy, playing hard, and having fun. We put a lot more effort into us than we did Wake Forest today and it helped. "
On the play of the big men:
"[Wake Forest] didn't double and we had a size advantage. They started small so we went right to James [Padgett] first play and he finished--that got him going. There was an elbow thrown early and that got Alex [Len] going. There was some jawing going on and that got him going. Charles [Mitchell] missed some layups that he usually makes, and I thought Shaq [Cleare] was good. Their screening was pretty good their ball screen defense was also pretty good, and their defending around the rim was tremendous. I told the radio that we played smarter defensively than we have in a long time.
"We put less effort into this scout [team] than we have in a while because we were mentally tired. We knew who their drivers were, knew their shooters and non-shooters, and the guys did a great job until we lost a little bit of focus the last seven or eight minutes. It's a sign of maturity; we are growing up. We all know the one thing we didn't do well was take care of the ball. Its mind boggling, it's frustrating. As a coaching staff we said when we turned the ball over we were going to stand up and cheer and yell next play--move on and get a stop. You take away turnovers and it could have been really fun today."
On the starting lineup:
"[Wake Forest] started a small lineup against Duke and I had a feeling they were going to do it again. James [Padgett] played really well at Florida State. James is a senior; I have a lot of confidence in James on the defensive end. He scored early, we went right to him. When he made the shot he gave up a three in transition on the other end. I thought, oh my god [Travis] McKie is going to get hot in this building again. James was tremendous in the whole. His defense, his team defense was great. He is a smart player. It takes a lot of pressure off of Alex, off of Shaq and Charles when he plays that way so it was a welcome sight.
"Jake [Layman] is a guy who is really starting to come on. I have a lot of confidence in him, his defense has gotten better. You can see how well he shoots it--coming off of that screen in the second half that was really pretty. Where we go at point guard I don't know. I have a lot of confidence in Nick [Faust]. Seth Allen played more point today than he has in a really long time, he did a nice job with it. I thought Pe'Shon [Howard] at the point was tremendous defensively today, especially in the first half he did a great job on [C.J.] Harris."
Senior Guard Logan Aronhalt
On Alex Len:
"I think Alex is a quiet kid. He kind of keeps on the inside. When he sets the tone like that early in the game, I know he's ready to go and he's going to play well the entire game."
On the win:
"We definitely needed to play like this. Coach told us after the game he feels the style of play and potential we have coming on. Tonight we really showed it."
On the success in the post:
"Just watching from the sidelines early in the game, I could see wide-open threes. I was almost drooling, waiting to get in, because I knew I was going to get wide-open shots. They all did a great job of dishing out when they got double teamed. We were wide open; Jake was wide open a couple times, I was wide open. We just knocked them down."
On coming off a tough loss:
"We knew we played hard against Florida State. It wasn't our best defensive game, but we executed well on offense. We just thought it was our time and they made a tough shot to win the game. Tonight we really executed and things paid off for us."
Sophomore Center Alex Len
On the differences in the Florida State game vs. today:
"I think we played well against Florida State. We played together, but today we finished it up. We played the whole 40 minutes together, and had each other's backs. That's what we need to do every game."
On the importance of the win:
"I think we're going to build off of this game for the rest of our schedule. We've got to play together and play hard every game and we'll be fine."
On his improved play over the Florida State game:
"I was focused from the start to come out and play as hard as I can--just help my teammates on the defensive end and not worry about offense."
Freshman Forward Jake Layman
On coming off a big loss at Florida State:
"It's big for us. It's a big win. We lost two in a row; we were looking for a big win, and I think we got it."
On the offense:
"At Florida State we were happy with our offense. We just got unlucky at the end there. We know our offense is rolling."
On the team's shooting today:
"It feels like you can't miss when you shoot it. I mean we shot great from three today. I think we were 11 of 16, which is great for us. We were playing through our post, which is what we try to do."
On the play of the big men:
"Today they were great. I mean they found us with our wide-open looks when they were getting double teamed. It was great."
Senior Forward James Padgett
"I didn't know until 10 minutes before the game, so I just knew I had to go out and do what coach asked of me and play as hard as I can for as long as I'm out there, and then coach would take care of the rest."
On not starting the last six games:
"You know, we're so deep that you can go with so many different combinations. Whether you're coming off the bench or starting, you just have to be ready to play. It's worked so far, so coach just decided to go back to me starting today."
On his early roll:
"I just tried to go out and do what I can. We tried to get [Travis] McKie into foul trouble early, so coach went to me and I made a couple of shots that got me rolling in the beginning."
Wake Forest Coach Jeff Bzdelik
"You have to give Maryland credit. They were hitting on all cylinders today, inside and out. They fed off the energy of their home crowd. They played very well."
On how the first half set the tone for the rest of the game:
"Well, when you're down 42-25, it sets a big tone."
On how Maryland pulled away:
"They just kind of slowly pulled away. We had some fast break opportunities that we didn't convert, and like I said, they were operating on all cylinders. They were going inside, they were scoring outside. We had some open looks, but they just didn't go down. They just kept widening the gap because we weren't making them miss; and even when we defended really well, they were still making shots."
On what they can do better going forward:
"We just have to keep working and practicing harder. We have to improve, get stronger, more efficient with our offense, and better defensively."
