Head Coach Brenda Frese Opening Statement:
"Just a great ACC game and battle. This is what they are all going to be about. I thought we showed a lot of character coming bouncing back from our loss to Carolina. Coming out and making a statement early in the first half, great energy in terms of how we defended and rebounded the basketball and shared the basketball. The second half you see a veteran led team with experience. We knew they were going to make runs and they did. Florida State is a really good team. I am proud of the fight, we didn't quit. We fought for each other. I am really excited in term of our team play, and for Tierney and Katie [Pfirman] [Rutan] hitting big shots. It opened it up and gave us some breathing room. Tremendous team win for us."
On if the second half reminded her of the North Carolina game:
"No. I was more concerned with the five straight turnovers we came out of the locker room with. I was more concerned that the turnovers were leading to poor defense. We were giving them three point plays and runs. I felt like we needed to get back to our defensive intensity with our ball pressure and dictating and hoping that would help us on the offensive end."
On the importance of getting one win this week:
"It's a tough opening for us. All of the games are going to be like this in conference play. I think for us when we play the way we know we can play we are really good. It showed a lot in terms of beating a team like Florida State, a veteran led team that they have to come out and get a win like this."
On the defense:
"I thought we were really good. I am excited that if we can shut down a team like Florida State with the offensive power that they have and their veterans, it bods well for this team. I told this team in the locker room that if you have a cold shooting night like we did at Carolina you can still bring your defense and that's a great sign for us. If we continue to lock in defensively like we have been."
On the rebounding:
"Look at Alyssa [Thomas], Tianna [Hawkins], and Tierney [Pfirman] getting seven [rebounds] tonight. That is what we do. We were disappointed with that edge against Carolina, only plus three. What makes this team so fun to coach is they respond. They have big hearts and they are just as disappointed when they don't do something well and they know they can excel. It was really exciting to see us rebound the basketball."
On the three-point shooting:
"It was huge. Katie [Rutan] was like the lone ranger, coming in with that kind of fire power and the mask. She comes in and was like bang-bang. She had a tremendous three that really broke it open late in the game. Tierney [Pfirman] you probably don't even know who the lone ranger is. When Tierney, Katie and Chloe [Pavlech] are making threes for us it gives us a dimension to have and inside outside game."
On the first ACC game and her comfort:
"After the UNC game I am feeling more comfortable knowing what it's going to be like. That was the first actually game with what the rest of the season is going to be like. Playing like I did tonight I feel very comfortable."
Florida State Head Coach Sue Semrau
"We have a lot of respect for what Alyssa Thomas has been able to do in this league. I thought she didn't disappoint today. I also have to really credit the Maryland staff with the job that they've done with [Tianna] Hawkins. She's become a player that's taken a lot of pressure off of Thomas. I thought the guards played well, they stepped up and hit shots. It was a good fight, it was a great ACC road battle for us and we learned a lot."
On if she felt like Maryland's short bench played a factor:
"No our bench is shorter, so no."
On the competition in the ACC this season:
"It's tremendous, we've been waiting for this. We've been looking forward to it and all of our games are going to be tough. We're a team that wants to get better every day. I love our chemistry, I love our team, and I'm excited about going forward."
Florida State Guard Alexa Deluzio
On what it was like to have to fight from behind all game:
"Well our theme this year is fight, and going off of what coach just said every game in the ACC is going to be tough. It's not over until the second half is over and we're going to fight back. It was anybody's game at one point, but like [Coach Semrau] said Maryland ended up playing very well down the stretch."
Florida State Guard Leonor Rodriguez
On playing from behind:
"Imagine if we had played better in the first half, we could have made a run in the second. It was a very physical ACC game with 50-50 balls. It was a tough games, so we need to be tougher mentally as well."
