BOCA RATON, Fla. -
The offense of the Maryland softball team exploded past LIU Brooklyn, 18-1, Sunday in its final game in Florida Atlantic's Kick-Off Classic in Boca Raton.
Maryland's bats combined for 11 hits, 13 RBI and drew seven walks in five innings. Nikki Maier knocked in four RBI and Lindsey Schmeiser had three.
Maddie Martin pitched 4.0 innings for the Terrapins (3-1) and allowed just four hits, one earned run, one walk and picked up two strikeouts.
Maryland scored seven runs to get things going in the top of the first. Shannon Bustillos drew a bases-loaded walk to open the flood gates. Juli Strange grounded out to score the second, and Lindsey Schmeiser reached on the fielder's choice for the third. With two runners on Maier sent a three-run homer over the wall for a 7-0 lead.
The Blackbirds (2-7) scored their lone run when Celinna Cosio singled through the left side.
In the top of the second, the Terps added four more runs. Sara Acosta brought in the fourth run with a sacrifice fly.
The Terrapins added six runs in the top of the third. The first one came on a series of errors by the Blackbirds, then a few more came off wild pitches. Beards drove in the final run with a single.
Maryland will take on No. 8 Missouri, No. 19 UCLA, No. 9 California, Oregon State and Nebraska next week in the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. They will take on the Tigers Thursday at 4 p.m. ET and Oregon State at 11:30 p.m. ET.
