WASHINGTON, D.C. – It was a day of fun and celebration as the Maryland Athletics family celebrated World Turtle Day in honor of the school’s popular mascot Testudo on Wednesday.

Maryland administration and staff joined Testudo on an outing to Washington, D.C. Wednesday evening, with stops at Capital One Arena, the National Portrait Gallery and the Green Turtle in Chinatown.

Testudo and his mascot friend, the Green Turtle, walked up F Street and spread the cheer of World Turtle Day, passing out Maryland “Run DMV” t-shirt while greeting fans that were in attendance for the Washington Capitals Game 7 watch party at Capital One Arena.

Executive Athletic Director Damon Evans led the group and was excited to be a part of the playoff atmosphere in Chinatown.

“This was a fun event to get out and make a fun connection with our local community,” Evans said. “Testudo is our number one fan and we wanted to support him on his special day, and to have the Capitals win game seven capped off an exciting evening.”

The victory sparked emotions from outside of Washington, including junior goalkeeper Megan Taylor, a diehard Caps fan, who celebrated the historic game seven victory with her teammates in Long Island. The women’s lacrosse team will face Boston College Friday night at Stony Brook in the national semifinals.
