#15 Terps Beat Illinois in B1G Opener

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore Kaila Charles led the Terps with 24 points as the No. 14 Maryland women’s basketball team (12-2, 1-0 B1G) opened Big Ten Conference play with a 100-65 win over Illinois (9-6, 0-1) Thursday evening in the XFINITY Center. 

Four other Terps finished with double-digit points: Blair Watson (22), Stephanie Jones (16), Ieshia Small (12) and Brianna Fraser (12). Jones and Charles each had double-doubles with 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively.

The Terps held a 54-34 advantage in rebound and a 42-20 lead in paint points.

With three three-pointers made Thursday, Kristen Confroy moved to No. 3 on Maryland’s career list with 174 in her career. She needs 13 more three-pointers to move into second in the record books (Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, 186).

The Terrapins own the all-time series vs. Illinois, 8-0.

Maryland used a 13-3 run in the first quarter to take a 26-11 lead. Charles had 17 of her 24 points in the first half as the Terrapins took a 57-31 lead into halftime.

A 9-0 run pushed Maryland ahead 79-48 at the end of the third quarter. Watson had a pair of three-pointers in the fourth, and the Terps hit 100 points for the third straight game on a Small layup.

Eleanna Christinaki made her XFINITY Center debut against the Illini. She competed in her first game as a Terp on Dec. 20 at Coppin State.

Since joining the Big Ten in 2014-15, the Terrapins are 59-3 (.952) vs. their conference opponents, including their nine wins in the Big Ten Tournament. Maryland is 31-3 (.912 ) against Big Ten teams at home in XFINITY Center. All are under Frese.  

Maryland is ranked No. 15 in the Associated Press poll and No. 14 in the USA Today Coaches poll.
