COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior middle blocker Hailey Murray had a hand in eight of the team’s 13 total blocks as the Maryland volleyball team (11-0) defeated Oklahoma (3-7) in straight sets (25-19, 25-15, 25-23) Friday in the XFINITY Center.
Sophomore outside hitter Gia Milana paced the Maryland offense with 14 kills while hitting at a .500 clip. Murray added nine kills and hit .667 while the team hit .362 in the match.
Maryland’s blocking was the highlight of the match as six Terps notched at least three blocks, including Murray’s eight. The Terrapins held the Sooners to just three blocks.
Oklahoma led for most of the first set, but the Terps were able to stay within two points. A kill from Erika Pritchard brought Maryland to within one at 19-18 and sparked an 8-0 run from the Terps to take the set. Samantha Snyder served two aces and the Sooners had three errors in the run to help Maryland to a 25-19 set win.
The Terps continued their streak into the second, taking a 6-0 lead. Eight Terp kills helped push the advantage to 13-3. Late in the set with Murray serving, Maryland went on a 5-0 run with kills from Angel Gaskin and Milana. Ahead 23-11, the Terps were unable to get to set point as the Sooners went on a 5-0 run of their own. Milana was finally able to knock down a kill, and Samantha Drechsel notched the game-winning kill at 25-15.
Milana had six kills and no errors to lead Maryland in the third set. The teams stayed closely matched before a 4-0 Terrapin run, including a block from Pritchard and Jada Gardner, put the Terps ahead, 18-16. Murray combined with Drechsel and Pritchard for two late blocks as Maryland went to 23-20. Murray tallied a kill to get the Terrapins to match point, 24-22, and Gaskin knocked down the final kill of the set, 25-23.
The Terps close the Maryland Challenge and the nonconference season against No. 7 Washington (9-1) in Friday at 7 p.m. in the XFINITY Center.
