Terps Announce 2018 Schedule

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Head coach Adam Hughes and the Maryland volleyball program announced an exciting 2018 schedule, featuring 10 matches against teams that were in the final 2017 AVCA Coaches Poll on Friday.

The Terrapins will face 10 teams that competed in the 2017 NCAA Tournament, including six Sweet 16 programs and defending national champions Nebraska. In conference play, Maryland will face seven programs that were either ranked or received votes in the final AVCA Coaches Poll of 2017. The Terps will host 2017 Elite Eight teams Michigan State and Minnesota in College Park to highlight the home schedule.

"This year's schedule was designed to bring together a very young roster,” said Hughes. “We're excited about the talent we're bringing back from last season, and we're also looking forward to seeing what our new additions can help provide to our program. Together we know we've got a lot to learn about the ins-and-outs of playing together and this schedule will help us grow before Big Ten play. We know the conference gives you no days off, and that we'll be tested by playing 14 of our 32 matches against 2017 NCAA tournament teams, but with these challenges comes opportunities. We're excited to about getting down to work and looking forward to seeing what we can achieve this upcoming season."

The Terps will open the season in North Carolina at the Wake Forest/University of North Carolina Greensboro Tournament. Maryland will play its first match of the season on Fri., Aug. 24 against Wake Forest before taking on UNCG and Air Force on Saturday. The contest against UNCG will be at Carolina-Greensboro while the matchup against Air Force will be at Wake Forest.

Maryland takes a trip to Ohio for the Akron Tournament on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. The Terps will take on Akron, 2017 NCAA Tournament Team Stony Brook and Canisus in the two-day tournament.

The annual Maryland Invite will occur in College Park on Sept. 8 and 9, as the Terps welcome South Carolina, Colgate and Liberty to the Xfinity Center Pavilion. Maryland will begin their 2018 home slate on Sat, Sept. 8 at 10:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. against Colgate and South Carolina before facing Liberty on Sun, Sept. 9 at 3:00 p.m.

The nonconference slate wraps up on Sept. 14 and 15 at the Temple Invite in Philadelphia, Pa. Maryland will play three games against New Hampshire, Temple and 2017 Ivy League Champion Princeton.

Maryland will play three of their first four Big Ten games at home. Rutgers travels to College Park to begin Big Ten play on Wed Sept. 19 for a primetime matchup before the Terps turnaround and travel to Minnesota on Sat Sept. 22.  

The following week, the Terps play host to Purdue and Ohio State on Sept. 26 and 29. Over the past three seasons, Maryland has defeated nationally ranked Ohio State twice and nationally ranked Purdue once at the Pavilion.  

October will begin with a trip to regional opponents Penn State and Rutgers on Oct. 5 and 6 before playing host to Michigan State and Michigan the following weekend, Oct. 12 and 14.

Maryland then swings to the Hoosier State for games versus Purdue and Indiana on Oct. 19 and 20, before a midweek matchup at Illinois on Oct. 24.

A three-game home stand will occur beginning on Sun. Oct 28 as the Terps play host to Iowa at the Pavilion. The next weekend, Maryland will welcome Northwestern and Illinois to College Park on Nov. 2 and 4.

Four out of Maryland’s last six games of the regular season will be on the road. Sandwiched with home games against perennial powerhouses Minnesota and Wisconsin on Nov. 16 and 17, the Terps will travel to Michigan and Ohio State on Nov. 7 and 10 before finishing off the season at Iowa and Nebraska on Nov. 23 and 24.
